Miami out to live up to hype after last year's 'nightmare'

After adding a monster class in the transfer portal, including star quarterback Cam Ward and running back Damien Martinez, expectations at Miami are sky high. Living up to that hype, however, has been an issue for the program for years, and players insist they're not going to let it happen again in 2024. Ward said he came to Miami from Washington State in large part because he saw the DNA of a championship contender, but he's also made a point to eliminate social media from his diet and has encouraged teammates to do the same, all in an effort to minimize the weight of those lofty expectations. The Hurricanes opened the 2023 season 4-0, including a win over Texas A&M, but a late collapse against Georgia Tech in a game in which they could've simply run out the clock to ensure victory stuck with the team well beyond the final whistle. Miami lost the next week to North Carolina, too, then dropped four of its last five games to finish 7-6.

Former Texas QB Maalik Murphy relishes 'fresh start' at Duke

Duke quarterback Maalik Murphy said Wednesday he could not have asked for a better fresh start, following his decision to transfer from Texas. Murphy said once he learned Quinn Ewers would return as the starter, he decided to find a school where he could compete for the starting job. When Murphy entered the portal last December, first-year coach Manny Diaz decided to make a play for the former Elite 11 quarterback, with Duke starter Riley Leonard gone to Notre Dame.

Mack Brown says UNC can be better despite losing Drake Maye

North Carolina has not named a starting quarterback to replace first-round pick Drake Maye, but coach Mack Brown says the Tar Heels have a chance to be a better team no matter who wins the competition. Texas A7M transfer Max Johnson and Connor Harrell head into fall camp vying for the starting job. It is the second time in four years the Tar Heels must replace a quarterback who has gone off to the NFL -- Sam Howell in 2022 and Maye to the New England Patriots in April with the No. 3 pick. After starting 6-0 last season, North Carolina lost five of its final seven games and finished 8-5. Brown made a change at defensive coordinator, hiring former Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins to revamp that group. But the focus remains on the quarterbacks.

Georgia Tech lands OT Josh Petty, No. 27-ranked prospect

Georgia Tech landed a pledge from in-state offensive tackle Josh Petty on Monday, marking a monumental addition for Brent Key and the Yellow Jackets in the 2025 class.Per ESPN rankings, Petty is the No. 27 overall prospect and sixth-ranked offensive tackle in the 2025 cycle. The 6-foot-5, 255-pound blocker from Roswell, Georgia, picked nearby Georgia Tech over Ohio State, Florida State, Tennessee and Stanford, and commits to the Yellow Jackets as the fourth and highest-ranked ESPN 300 prospect in the program's upcoming class, joining fellow in-state pledges in cornerback Dalen Penson (No. 171) and offensive linemen Damola Ajidahun (No. 180) and Justin Hasenhuetl (No. 220). Petty is a two-way star at Georgia's Fellowship Christian High School, playing full-time snaps on both sides of the line. As a junior, the four-star prospect had 58 total tackles with nine tackles for loss, five sacks and an interception. On the wrestling mat, Petty claimed the Georgia 2A state title at 285-pounds as a sophomore before a runner-up in the same class earlier this year.

Florida State, ACC complete court-ordered mediation

Florida State and the Atlantic Coast Conference completed mediation mandated by a Florida judge, according to a court filing posted Thursday, as the legal battle between the school and the league it has been a member of for 32 years appears poised to drag into the football season and beyond. According to the filing, representatives of the school and conferences mediated in person on Aug. 13. "Although the parties did not resolve this matter, the parties continue discussions," the two-sentence joint notice of mediation compliance stated.

Florida State and Clemson are both searching for an affordable way out of the ACC, challenging what they consider to be exorbitant exit fees and a contract that binds member schools to each other and the conference through media rights. Florida State says leaving the ACC now could cost more than half a billion dollars. The ACC has countersued both schools, saying neither has the right to sue and are breaching their contractual agreements by doing so.

The ACC's media rights contract with ESPN runs through 2036, though the network has an option to end the deal in 2027. ACC members also signed a grant of rights that runs concurrent with the ESPN deal and hands over the broadcast rights to the school's home football games through the length of the agreement. Florida State and Clemson say the value of the deal leaves them at a disadvantage when compared to schools in the SEC and Big Ten.

Florida State drops out of AP Top 25 poll after 0 - 2 start
Florida State fell out of the Associated Press college football poll on Tuesday after starting the season 0-2, becoming just the third team to go from preseason top-10 to unranked in the first regular-season poll since the rankings expanded to 25 in 1989. No other preseason Top 25 team this year lost to an unranked opponent to open the season. Florida State did it twice as a double-digit favorite.

Mike Norvell addresses Florida State's 'failure' after loss

Florida State coach Mike Norvell ran off his home field after a 28-13 loss to Boston College on Monday night, his stone-faced expression speaking for him. Nobody around the Seminoles program expected what has unfolded over two weeks in front of a national television audience: An 0-2 start with issues across the board, including an inability to run the ball, an overmatched and oftentimes flummoxed defensive front and a passing game that has struggled with a completely overhauled roster.

If the 24-21 season-opening loss to Georgia Tech could be explained away because it happened a continent away in Ireland, Florida State's loss to Boston College exposed many of the same issues that came up against the Yellow Jackets. Florida State came into the season not only as the defending ACC champion but as the preseason choice to again win the conference -- despite losing its best players

Florida State has done this before under Norvell. In 2021, it started 0-4 before rallying to win five of its final eight games. Then in 2022, it dropped three straight before reeling off six straight wins. That season launched the Seminoles to 13-0 in 2023 and an ACC championship victory, until a snub from the College Football Playoff left a significantly depleted Florida State team to play Georgia in the Orange Bowl.
