UNC's Brown takes blame but says no plans to resign after 70-50 loss

Mack Brown told ESPN on Saturday that he is not resigning after an emotional locker room scene with his players following North Carolinas embarrassing 70-50 loss to James Madison, which is in its third season as an FBS school. Brown, a College Football Hall of Famer, said he told the players that it was his fault and that he would step away if he couldn't get things fixed. The 70 points were the most ever given up by the Tar Heels, who fell to 3-1. Brown, 73, is in his sixth season at North Carolina. He told ESPN he was aware of some reports and that messages in emotional locker rooms can be misconstrued but was adamant that he is not stepping down. He has led North Carolina to winning records in four of his five seasons. The Tar Heels won eight games last season and nine the season before when they finished first in the ACC's Coastal Division. Brown was at Texas for 16 seasons and won a national championship in 2005 and played for another in 2009. He resigned under pressure following the 2013 season and, after taking a break from coaching, returned in 2019 to North Carolina for his second stint in Chapel Hill. Brown was North Carolina's coach from 1988 to 1997.

NC State DE Davin Vann, mom to bring supplies to flood areas
Numerous areas of western North Carolina are under water, with residents isolated from basic services, while others have been displaced by storm water. More than 30 people in the state have been confirmed dead and nearly 2 million are still without power.

**********
Vann is a fifth-year senior from Cary, North Carolina. He has been a starter on the defensive line for three years, and leads the team with 6.5 tackles for loss this season, including 3.5 in a win over Northern Illinois on Saturday.

FSU QB DJ Ulagalele injures finger; TBD vs. Clemson
It has been a struggle for Uiagalelei and the Florida State offense this season. The two-time transfer, who began his career at Clemson, has thrown four touchdown passes to six interceptions and is completing only 53.8% of his passes. His quarterback rating is 34.4.

Recruit Malik Clark decommits from FSU after Seminoles' 1-4 start

Four-star wide receiver Malik Clark decommitted from Florida State on Tuesday evening, joining the line of ESPN 300 recruits to leave the Seminoles' incoming class amid the program's 1-4 start to the 2024 season. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Clark, the No. 164 overall prospect in the 2025 ESPN 300, initially committed to FSU in late July following official visits to South Carolina, North Carolina, NC State and Florida State. Clark, from Rock Hill, South Carolina, is ESPN's 16th-ranked receiver in the class. His decommitment comes several weeks after he was on campus for the Seminoles' loss to Memphis on Sept. 14.

Mike Norvell's 2025 recruiting class has taken a series of hits as the Seminoles, who were ranked No. 10 in The Associated Press Preseason Top 25, fell to 1-4 after Saturday's 42-16 loss to SMU. Four-star defensive tackle Myron Charles (No. 166) flipped his commitment to Texas on Sept. 7, and four-star defensive end Javion Hilson (No. 71) pulled his pledge from the Seminoles a day later with plans to announce his final commitment closer to the Dec. 4 early signing period. Prior to Clark's decommitment, Florida State was No. 29 in ESPN's latest team rankings for the 2025 cycle.

McCutcheon, a 5-foot-11 pass catcher from Allen, Texas, had been committed to Florida State since July 13. Prior to Thursday, he was the second-ranked member of Mike Norvell's 2025 recruiting class, trailing only five-star in-state offensive tackle Solomon Thomas. With McCutcheon's pledge, the Longhorns now hold commitments from 13 ESPN 300 prospects, including three of ESPN's top-15 wide receivers in the current cycle. McCutcheon follows Charles as the second former Florida State pledge to flip to Texas since the start of the regular season. Florida State is now at seven ESPN 300 pledges in a class that sat at No. 29 in ESPN's latest team rankings for the cycle prior to McCutcheon's flip.

Tylee Craft, beloved UNC receiver, dies at 23 from cancer

North Carolina wide receiver Tylee Craft died Saturday morning following a lengthy battle with cancer, the school announced. Craft, 23, of Sumter, South Carolina, was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer on March 14, 2022. The UNC community had rallied behind him with the #TyleeStrong hashtag since his diagnosis. He had undergone numerous treatments, but the cancer spread through his body and brain. Still, he had enrolled in graduate courses toward his master's degree in applied professional studies and graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in exercise and sports science/sports administration. Craft had been struggling with debilitating back pain, so UNC's athletic training staff took him to the hospital in 2022 for more testing to determine the cause of it. That's when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. He immediately began an aggressive treatment of chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

Texas, Oregon, Penn State lead APTop 25; Ohio State drops to 4

Texas strengthened its hold on No. 1. The Longhorns received 56 of 62 first-place votes, four more than last week and their most since they were a unanimous No. 1 in October 2008. This weekend wasn't as wild as the week before, when four of the top 11 teams were upset and only two teams held their spots in the ensuing rankings shuffle.
