Bad Adverts

Really fuckin hate this advert. It's made by Weiden & Kennedy who are normally very good.

This is self referential bollocks. It only exists in adland.

At several points they say Woooaahhh!

Wow that voiceover is annoying.

Also I know nothing about football but I'm pretty sure no one scores every time they get the ball? That would be an insanely high amount of goals.

Is that a character from Shiticide Squad with the sword?

Ouch, thats bad. Also bad that he has to show a picture of himself when he was famous - oh dear, that shows that at some point they worked out he wasn't known by ANYONE AT ALL

Just to add another shit car commercial! Apparently the only important thing to consider when buying a car is how it makes you feel.

So, some clever bod somewhere has worked out that we generally make decisions with our Limbic brain - this is an ancient part of the brain in our evolutionary process and dominates our "will". We place a lot of credit to the rational thinking in our neocortex but this can very easily be overridden by our limbic drivers "I don't know, it just felt right" - "gut feel" etc.

So, this clever bod decided that we can split advertising into emotional and rational. This means that we have benefit led advertising (IT CLEANS TWICE AS FAST") favoured by Procter and Gamble (e.g Fairy Liquid) versus the Emotional advertising from Unilever (Think Dove soap).

So - this means Fairy Liquid - (lasts twice as long as ordinary)
VERSUS
Dove Soap - REAL WOMEN ARE BEAUTIFUL LIKE YOU

This is reductive and simplified nonsense. Just because the limbic part of our brain can override the neocortex does NOT MEAN IT DOES IT ALL THE FUCKIN TIME. Nor does it mean that we ignore signals from our thinking rational brain just cos we feel it in our waters.

The fact of the matter is that delivering benefit led advertising is HARD. Most products are sort of the same with minimal differences. So ad agencies say "Blah Blah LIMBIC BRAIN Blah Blah EMOTIONAL ADVERTISING Blah Blah CANT BE ARSED TO WORK AN IDEA HARD Blah Blah etc."

Truly hard working benefit led advertising is hard work, humans are lazy - you get the idea.

I think this is a great example of an effective car commercial. When this was on the tv all the time i wanted a Subaru AND I DON'T EVEN DRIVE. lol I think it fits in the benefit type of commercial? It's definitely appealing to quality, but it's also appealing to emotions. They figured out a good balance.

Their new commercials aren't nearly as good and I don't want a Subaru anymore.

Can I just say that I fucking hate any ad that is telling me I'm "A PART OF TEAM GB!!!" for buying their product because hey me buying your product is not the same fucking thing as winning a gold medal so please don't try and convince me that the 20p you send to Team GB (IS THAT EVEN WHAT THEY DO???) makes me a part of the Olympics as a way to make people feel somehow patriotic when they buy your product.
