Julius Peppers, Antonio Gates headline first-time HOF nominees

Three-time All-Pros Julius Peppers and Antonio Gates headline the list of nine first-year eligible players picked among the 273 nominees for the 2024 class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Peppers was one of the league's most dominant linemen after being picked second overall by Carolina in 2002 following a two-sport career in college at North Carolina. He had 12 sacks as a rookie and never really slowed down in a 17-year career that included stops in Chicago and Green Bay before ending back with the Panthers. He was an All-Pro in 2004, 2006 and 2010. Peppers finished his career with 159.5 sacks -- the fourth most since they became official in 1982 -- and had 10 seasons with double-digit sacks. Only Hall of Famers Bruce Smith (13) and Reggie White (12) had more.

Gates finished with 955 catches for 11,841 yards and 116 touchdown receptions -- an NFL record for tight ends. Only Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten have more catches or yards as a tight end.

Panthers not expecting Bryce Young to play vs. Seahawks

The Carolina Panthers are expected to be without quarterback Bryce Young for Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks after the top pick of the 2023 draft missed his second straight practice Thursday with an ankle injury, the team said Thursday. Young ranks 27th in the league in ESPN's Total QBR (35.5) and 31st in passer rating (66.6). He has led only two touchdown drives -- only one over the first 7½ quarters -- and has three turnovers (two interceptions, one fumble). Veteran Andy Dalton took all the first-team snaps both days.

Panthers' Bryce Young to miss 1-2 weeks; Andy Dalton starting
The top pick of the 2023 NFL draft will be replaced by veteran Andy Dalton, starting with Sunday's game at Seattle. Dalton is 1-1 against the Seahawks in Seattle, with his only two starts coming for the Cincinnati in 2011 and 2019. But he understands Seattle's reputation for having one of the loudest stadiums in the NFL.

Panthers QB Bryce Young (ankle) on track to start vs. Vikings

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young is on track to return as the starter for Sunday's home game against the Minnesota Vikings, barring a setback with his sprained right ankle over the next couple of days, coach Frank Reich said Wednesday. Young, who missed Sunday's 37-27 loss at Seattle on Sunday, participated fully in Wednesday's practice. It was his first practice since suffering a mild ankle sprain in a Week 2 Monday night loss to the New Orleans Saints. The ankle was taped when Young arrived for practice but didn't hinder his workload or performance. Young missed only one start in three years at Alabama. That was with a sprained throwing shoulder for an early-season game against Texas A&M.

Bryce Young feels 'great,' expected to play Sunday
Young, 0-2 as the starter, couldn't recall if he ever had a start like this or lost consecutive games as a player at any level. He never did at Alabama, where he was 23-4 as the starter with two losses each in 2021 and '22. Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown called it the best practice of the year for Young.

NFL Week 5 Power Rankings 2023: How all 32 teams stack up
This week, we've updated the rankings and are taking a look at every team's defensive efficiency rating (per ESPN Analytics' Football Power Index). Our 32 NFL Nation reporters also identified the biggest issue on every defense.

No.31: Carolina (0-4)
For a unit that entered Sunday's loss to Minnesota down three starters, and then lost starting corner Donte Jackson (shoulder) in the first half, the secondary has held up surprisingly well. What the Panthers can't do consistently is stop the run. Only five teams have given up more than their 545 yards rushing. Only four are allowing more than their 4.7 yards per carry. It's constantly keeping opponents in manageable down-and-distance situations that ultimately will impact the back end of the defense.
