Carolina Panthers (15) | Houston Texans (13)

Bryce Young outdueled C.J. Stroud in a battle of the NFL’s top two draft picks, and Eddy Pineiro made a 23-yard field goal as time expired to send the Carolina Panthers over the Hoston Texans for their first win of the season.

Young, the No. 1 overall pick, threw for 235 yards and a touchdown. He led a winning 15-play, 86-yard drive that took more than six minutes off the clock in helping the Panthers (1-6) snap a 56-game losing streak in games they trailed at any point in fourth quarter, the longest in NFL since at least 1991. Young overcame six sacks and three drops by his wide receivers to record his first win since coming into the NFL out of Alabama.

Stroud, the second overall pick, was 16 of 24 for 140 yards and ran for a touchdown for Houston (3-4).

In first win, Bryce Young shows why Panthers took him No. 1

The Carolina Pathers were down 13-12 and staring at an 0-7 record Sunday when rookie quarterback Bryce Young gathered teammates at their own 9-yard line with just over six minutes to play. Lose, and the noise suggesting the Panthers should have used the No. 1 overall draft pick this year on C.J. Stroud, standing on the opposite sideline with the Houston Texans, instead of Young would grow louder. Losing never entered Young's mind. How rare was Young's game-winning drive for Carolina? Not since 2018, when Cam Newton helped the Panthers erase a 17-0 fourth-quarter deficit, have the Panthers come from behind in the final period for a win. In Young, the Panthers believe they have a player who can sustain success over the long haul. That's why they put so much on him early in terms of installing the entire playbook while the Texans were more select in playing to Stroud's strengths.

Brian Burns trade inquiries rejected by Panthers, sources say

For the second straight year, Carolina Panthers star pass-rusher Brian Burns was in demand before and at the NFL trade deadline, with at least five teams inquiring about dealing for the two-time Pro Bowl linebacker, sources told ESPN. The Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers -- two teams that wound up acquiring other pass-rushers before the deadline -- both expressed interest in Burns this year, sources told ESPN. The Jacksonville Jaguars Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens also reached out to the Panthers about Burns, according to sources. Burns, 25, has a team-leading five sacks in seven games this season, his fifth with the Panthers.

Carolina Panthers' LB Burns in concussion protocol after loss

Pro Bowl outside linebacker Brian Burns will have a tough time clearing the concussion protocol in time for Thursday night's game against the Chicago Bears, Panthers coach Frank Reich said Sunday. Burns was diagnosed with a concussion in the fourth quarter of a 27-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts that dropped Carolina to 1-7. The average number of days it takes to clear the league's five-step process for return to participation is nine, although it can be done in less. The first-round pick out of Florida State in 2019 has 43 sacks since entering the league and is seeking to be paid among the top edge rushers in the NFL.
