Panthers' Bryce Young not blaming Frank Reich for struggles​


Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Bryce Young said he accepts some of the responsibility for Monday's firing of head coach Frank Reich. Young also made it clear he doesn't believe Reich failed him in terms of his or the offense's development during an NFL-worst 1-10 start. But Young's lack of development since the Panthers traded two first-round picks and star wide receiver D.J. Moore to the Chicago Bears to move from ninth to first in the April draft is a big reason the offensive-minded Reich and quarterbacks coach Josh McCown were fired on Monday.

Young's 8.7 yards per completion ranks last among rookie quarterbacks with at least 10 starts in a season since 1966. His 5.4 yards per attempt ranks eighth worst behind a group of forgettable names such as Blaine Gabbert and Joey Harrington. His total QBR of 32.1 is the second worst among qualified quarterbacks this season. Only Zach Wilson of the New York Jets is worse at 30.9. The good news for Young is that owner David Tepper gave him a vote of confidence, saying Tuesday he supported the decision to select Young first over C.J. Stroud, who is having an MVP-like year as the second overall pick by the Houston Texans.

The Panthers rank 30th in total offense (265.9 yards per game), 30th in net passing yards (173.3 yards per game) and 29th in scoring (15.7 points per game). They haven't scored more than 10 points the past two games and haven't topped 15 in the past five.

Panthers activate CB Jaycee Horn to 53-man roster​


Carolina Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn will be available to play in Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. Horn on Saturday was activated to the 53-man roster, the team announced. He was limited in Friday's practice, so it remains unclear as to whether the 2021 first-round pick out of South Carolina will be used. But Horn has a chance to get back on the field after suffering a hamstring injury that required surgery after a Week 1 loss at Atlanta. The Panthers had until Monday to activate him before his 21-day window to return from injured reserve expired.

Carolina (1 - 11)

The Panthers fired Frank Reich last Monday, 11 games into the coach's first season leading the Panthers. Tabor was promoted to interim coach for the rest of the season and said he encouraged players to “play loose, not reckless” and have fun moving forward. It was the second time in a little more than a year that Carolina faced Tampa Bay shortly after the in-season hiring of a coach. Matt Ruhle was dismissed in October 2022, two weeks before the Panthers knocked off Tom Brady and the Bucs 21-3 in Charlotte.

Tampa Bay (5 - 7)

Tampa Bay's Mike Evans scored on a 75-yard reception and joined Jerry Rice as the only players in NFL history to string together 10 consecutive seasons with 1,000-plus yards receiving while helping the Buccaneers beat the struggling Carolina Panthers. The Bucs won for only the second time in the past eight games, climbing into a tie for second place in the weak NFL South.

Underneath the smiles, 1-11 Panthers frustrated with losing​


Carolina Panthers interim coach Chris Tabor spent the week telling players to have fun over the final six games. On the surface, his message seemed to be getting through. The locker room was upbeat and full of smiles in the aftermath of head coach Frank Reich's firing on Monday. There was hope Sunday's game against the Tampay Bay Buccaneers would be the start of something that could carry over into next season. But underneath the smiles lurked the frustration of a one-win season in a year when the NFC South was there for the taking with the division-leading Atlanta Falcons at 6-6.

Stats show Panthers' Bryce Young hasn't improved this season​

The Carolina Panthers are 1-11 and Bryce Young is 1-10, having missed one game with a sprained ankle. He ranks near the bottom of the NFL in practically every category at his position, including Total QBR (31.4), where he is ahead of only Zach Wilson of the New York Jets (30.3). Heading into Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints (1 p.m. ET, Fox), the 2023 No. 1 overall pick has shown little statistical improvement over the course of a tumultuous season, but the team still supports him. It's not all on Young, though. Statistics show the offensive line isn't doing enough in pass protection -- particularly center Bradley Bozeman, who ranks among the worst in the league with seven sacks allowed -- and wide receivers aren't getting open deep or creating consistent separation.

Young's average time before a pass is 2.89 seconds, 10th-longest. He has held onto the ball an average of 2.84 seconds when blitzed, sixth-longest. Thirty of the sacks have come with no blitz, meaning teams are able to get pressure on Young without bringing extra bodies, so there are more defenders available to cover receivers. And 12.5% of the sacks have come in the red zone (third-highest rate behind Deshaun Watson and Wilson), a factor in Carolina ranking 29th in scoring at 15.9 points per game. Carolina has the second-lowest play-action rate (15.3%) behind the Saints (9.4%). Of the six teams that use the least play-action, five rank 19th or worse in scoring, and three -- Carolina, Pittsburgh and the Jets -- rank lower than 28th.

Rookie Bryce Young's season-long struggles continued. The first overall draft choice finished 13 of 36 for 137 yards and lost a fumble in the first half. He was sacked four times. The Panthers stalled twice inside the Saints 20 in the second half and made just one of two field goals on those possessions. They also went 1 of 7 on fourth down.

New Orleans (6 - 7)

Playing one week after leaving a game with a concussion, as well as a fractured rib and a sore shoulder, Carr passed for just 37 yards through three-plus quarters. He finished 18 for 26 for 119 yards. The Saints' victory was their 200th since Mickey Loomis became the club's general manager in 2002.
