"Cloverfield".....WTF?

I don't care for movies where New York gets totalled these days. Since, you know, that time when it actually was. Still hits a little close to home.

Overall, underwhelmed by the whole thing. Interesting concept, but I like plot. I want to leave knowing what caused this and what happened b/c of it. Not just an hour and a half of running around like idiots (never picking up a weapon).

Fair enough to both complaints. My significant other, a NYC native and a book editor, had a real problem with both a pretty gratuitous 9/11-derived scene (it's near the beginning of the mayhem and again, you'll know it when you see it.), as well as the lack of denouement. As for weapons, yeah: A hiccup of logic. Especially after their experiences mid-film.

I'd say so, if you don't let your expectations get too high about the film itself, and you don't get a really shitty shot-with-a-hidden-camcorder-in-the-theatre bootleg. I don't think anybody's brain is designed to process a handheld-camera version of a whole film originally shot with a handheld camera.

Couldn't agree more. I'll wait for a dvd rip.

Is this the monster in the movie? or another ploy to fool people?

DONT CLICK (if you dont want it ruined)

That's not what's in the movie, although it may very well be a genuine early development sketch (likely leaked to throw people's expectations off, and it worked.). I'm so glad it turned out to look almost nothing like that.

Wiki's comprehensive on the film as well as the overall marketing phenomenon. and they've got quite a lot of links. I've looked for a good screenshot of it and found nothing.

The photobucket link on the bloody-disgusting page doesn't work!

But now I see what you mean, even though I missed it while watching it. I completely forgot that scene existed.

Thanks :D

I'm convinced that pouty-looking woman with the dark curly hair that's been featured prominently in the TV spots is the same one that two military-types take behind some brightly-lit makeshift curtain, where we see in silhouette that she seems to be caught in the preliminary stages of exploding (listen closely to the sounds, then slo-mo the image).
DID I FUCKIN CALL THIS OR WHAT?!? :bigass:

There was a tv spot running during the premiere of "Lost" last night that gave an excellent view of the monster's face. I can't remember if that exact shot was in the movie, but there was one very much like it that made me damn near shit my shitty dual pants.

Just saw it. It was good, but I felt slightly disappointed because in the end it came down to a pretty standard monster-attacks-New York movie.

Given this was JJ Abrams, and the mysterious marketing campaign, I expected some 'all is not what it appears' twists or something - eg like Lost.
(unless there's something I'm missing)

still, it was very effective at thrusting you right into chaos and panic, and was spectacular.

Opening shot of the film. Check the lower right corner.

Ha Ha Dharma!

apparantley in the very last scene, which cuts back to them having a day out on the beach, you see something falling into the water - it's been speculated that this is the Japanese sattelite and somehow this causes the creature to awaken. wish I could go back to check again.
