^You forgot Rhea and veganmom in your list of contenders... (assuming someone would actually nominate them...actually, they'd probably nominate each other)

Shudder.

Rhea? Maybe. Be she supports EI staff no matter what.

Vegantroll? Hell no. Did I say hell no? I meant HELLLLLL NO.

I don't know...if the staff could manage to tame that one a bit so they wouldn't have to warn her for obvious offenses...I could see it. She's subservient enough.

Cait, Spidey, thanks for the thought, but even if I was nominated I severely doubt 'd be chosen - but thanks for the thought.

Jack, yes, there is a poster there who defines herself by her dietary choice and by having sprogged in the US.

Out of curiosity, Cait, if they even wanted you for a Watchdog, would you be willing to do it again?

Probably not, I really don't have the time to devote to that, but the truth is, I don't think it would sit well the community. I think the WD does have to represent the community and have their approval to be there. I'm not one of those people any longer. However I was a kick ass WD when I was in there.

BTW, Rhea is also a former WD, and I can imagine she was kick ass as well.

Someone please nominate me publicly again. I love to see the idiots chime in that a perma banned member would make a bad watchdog.

^The sad part is you actually will have a large group of members who'll take the time to type out long detailed posts why it can't/shouldn't happen...

Do you really think Rhea, who started the whole "ExIsle is not TK" thread, would have the best intrest of all members in mind if she were to become the WD?

No. I was only mentioning that she *had* been a WD and that at the time I think she was kick ass. I wouldn't trust her *now* to watch out for my interests [or those of a lot of other EI members]. She's made her opinions of me quite clear.

Very true. Thanks, Cait, was just wondering...

Who of the Slipstream crowd hasn't been a Watch Dog yet?

Isn't that one of the qualifications for that position?

^To my knowledge, any registered member of EI has the potential to become a WD. You just have to successfully jump through all the hoops the staff lays out...

There has been a discernible trend toward favoring the old SS crowd. I'm not sure, but it might actually be 100% old SS'ers.

I don't think that is all just favoring the old crowd. It's the old crowd that cares about watching the Staff. I'll bet other members have been asked or nominated who could just care less about the position. Old SS'ers are the ones who went through the OQ leak and hence are the ones who care.

Or not! Maybe it is just a clique and that's all there is to that.

LOL, that is a real understatement. Even when I presented potential WD's when I was leaving the position, I had no idea what criteria they used in choosing the next WD. It's an age old custom shrouded in mystery. LOL

My opinion is this. It should be run differently. The member should make the nominations, the Staff can vet the list to 'acceptable candidates', and then the members vote from that list. That would eliminate the "extreme" cherry picking.

The Staff does have the right to qualify a list. There is a security issue, but the members should pick after the list has been qualified by the Staff. And I don't want to hear about "popularity contests" because it is the same with the Staff choosing, they pick someone they like.

Just my two cents... and we know how much my 2 cents is worth over there. ;)

^I agree 100%. The whole point of a WD is to keep an eye on the Staff and make sure they don't do/say anything questionable. But if the elected WD is on good terms and buddies with all the staff, the chances of them alerting the membership is slim... After all, who'd knowingly put their friends in a compromising position?

Here is the REAL problem. [A couple of ex WD's and I have discussed it at some length.] When would a WD [who is doing their job] publically report a problem to the community?

I had I think 3 times as a WD when I had to say something [forcefully]. All three times the Staff listened and got back on topic instead of on personalities. Mind you there was nothing on the order of the SS OQ, so don't misunderstand what I am saying here. There were no gross Staff improprieties, just things that were 'slippery slopes' in my opinion. But then that is the job of a WD, to nip things in the bud.

But what if a WD can't get the Staff to respond? What then?

There has never been a report from a WD stating that there was a definite problem in the SL? That is a statistic anomaly. There are going to be lapses. We had one report that two WD's had a terrible time and nothing was resolved. They both agonized over what to do. Report it to the community or not report it. Both WD's were burned out by the end of their terms because they fought the battle alone in the SL.

But, they both reasoned that the community was better served if they battled alone instead of the community exploding if the problem were made public. I can't say as I would have concluded any differently. EI is a volatile and sensitive community and it does explode easily.

Which leaves us with what to do. The position is needed, but the position has a built in problem. No one wants to bring a real problem to the membership at large. No one. That's not saying there *IS* anything to bring at the moment, but even if there were few WD's would make it public.

Most of the time [from my observation], I can tell you, the SL is quite boring. But those days are long gone I fear. We now have warnings to discuss, bans to disuses etc.. there is sensitive discussion about actual members and I am sure the line is moved further and further back because no WD wants to be the one to report to the community that personalities [not offenses] are discussed. And so they just aren't seen as clearly as I might have seen them or Lil, or Drew..

You need a Bull Terrier in there, and even then.. not one of us reported anything publiclaly. We all [or I did] handled it in the SL itself.

This is the philosophical problem with WD's.
