Importing CDs in iTunes

You need to let the iTunes get passed your firewall, then you need to click "Share library" in your iTunes preferences.
 
Even if the computers are not networked together in any way save sharing a modem and router?

I tried to set up a home network in the past, and was never able to get it to work. I suspect that the desktop may not have the required hardware.

You may just need to get the communication going, but everything you need you have.
 
What kind of desktop is it? If it's got an ethernet port, it's ready. Depending on the OS we'll set it up in one of two different ways.
 
Right now, my music library is predominantly on the laptop. I've only uploaded a handful of CDs to the desktop. So I mean desktop as in the desktop PC, as opposed to the laptop PC.
 
It's a Compaq Presario 5300. I'm assuming it has an ethernet port, because so far as I know, that's what I'm running the DSL through.
 
Well, okay, there it is.

I don't know why it wouldn't work before, but now it pops up when I go to "My Network Places." So all I have to do is just copy the files from the iTunes folder into the Shared Music Folder on the desktop, and I'm ready to rumble.

Gotcha.

So what you do is Share the music library on both computers by going to Preferences > Sharing and click on the Share my entire library checkbox.

Now you download "Ourtunes" and run it on the computer you want to move your music to. Ourtunes will browse the shared library and you can move any of the files you want.

Then with my above trick, you drag those moved files from their destination to the Library on that machine, iTunes will move them to the iTunes music folder, and you can then delete them from the destination folder.

Ourtunes is fucking rad. Every once in a while I'll open up my wireless network here at home and most of my neighbors will jump on for the free internet. If they share their libary, I'm stealing their shit. Hehe. Cross-platform, too!

I've noticed that, too, thus I've chosen to keep certain dupes, just to keep an album/compilation whole.

But, I think I'm going to re-import my library at a higher bit-rate before copying it to the desktop PC.

Thanks, guys. This is great, and my wife will appreciate it, too, since she's the primary user of the desktop PC.
 
Wait...Ishy...are you saying there's a way of permanently moving my library onto a networked computer? Because I've just been sharing, then when the authorized computer is shut down, all the other computers lose access.

Sure, any networked computer in your house can become the "iTunes Server".

Put everything on that one computer, share the library, then every computer in the same network can listen to that shared library. The way I ended up doin' it here in the house:

The powermac serves out it's library through the wireless router to the PC and laptops... anyone in the house can listen to their choice of 60GB of music, without having to have it all on their HD.
 
The one bit is that the iTunes server does need to be on all the time... but most often a desktop computer is anyway, right? Just turn off the display when yer not using it and your desktop can be your jukebox.
 
Okay...but I currently have approximately 280 gigs of music on an external hard drive. Will that get shared?
 
Okay, two more questions.

One, how do I get the library that I've uploaded on my "side" of the computer to show up on my wife's "side"? When she logs in, none of the stuff I've uploaded appears in her iTunes library.

Two, when I use the Ourtunes program, I assume I'm supposed to send the files to the iTunes music folder on the hard drive I'm downloading to. However, it doesn't organize them into folders and such. How do I get it to organize these for me?
