Importing CDs in iTunes

In the list on the left, make sure she is clicked onto whatever your filename for your iTunes music is called. Her library is empty, so if she's clicked on that, nothing will show up.

Yeah, but when you switch from user to user in Windows XP, the other person's files don't show up. And since you're not able to simultaneously run two applications of iTunes on the same computer, it's not something that can be solved by networking.

I don't want to have to create a duplicate set of files in her iTunes folder.

Do you see what I'm saying? It's not sharing files from one user to another, just from one computer to another.

Huh. I know I can share iTunes from one user to another on this computer (my friend's daughter has a separate password, so she doesn't unwittingly bump into anything not age appropriate on my desktop). And I do open iTunes so she could use it under her password. So it is possible, somehow.

I can tell you how to do it on a Mac....

Duh!

I just change her default folder to the same as mine.

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the most elusive.

I made both accounts administrator accounts when I initially set up Windows.

I'll fuck around with it more later. Right now I'm busily reimporting things at 192 kbps and grading shitty essays.

One problem may be that I imported the stuff upstairs as MP3 files--before I made the decision to buy an iPod--and it's hemming and hawing about file associations.

When I've imported everything properly onto this computer, I'll download it to the computer upstairs, and then see what I can do. It's not urgent--she can access the files on my computer now through sharing, so it's more the desire to (1) have this all backed up on two hard drives and (2) wanting the computer upstairs to be self-sufficient, in case she's home and I've left with my laptop.

6, don't forget the videos! You can download videos on iTunes, also.

In fact, iTunes has a free download this week of the premiere episode of Conviction. That's the new courtroom drama on ABC. Check it out! :D

No downloading for now. It occured to me that I would need to test out the new DVD player with some Region 2 DVDs, so I've blown my spending money for the next couple of months.

Wow, this discussion is getting out of hand...

...I've got a couple solutions for you folks, but my iBook is about outta juice, and I gotta catch a bus.

If you're around later this evening, I'll describe how you can get both users to look at one spot for their iTunes libraries, how Friday can share out her 280GB HD over her network, and how to effectively use Ourtunes to move files around your machines.

MAC GURU, AWAY!

We reverently await the wisdom that only you can impart, O Mac Guru.

Meanwhile, I'll make the ritual sacrifice of a PC to prove our eternal loyalty and faithfulness to you. :D

sO iF yOU... ahem...

So, if you notice there is a Shared folder in the User's folder. Each user has access to that folder in the same way they have access to their home folder.

Put your iTunes Library in that folder, then direct both user's copies of iTunes to look for their musics there, you'll have all the music in one spot and both users will have access.

Friday can share her iTunes library no matter where it is located, be it spread across six drives or whatever. As long as you go to Preferences > Sharing and check Share my Library, any other computer on your local network will be able to play tunes from that shared Library.

Another good thing to mention is that if you have Fast User Switching on and one user starts their iTunes up, shares their Library, and then switches to the other user, that shared library will show up for the second user. So technically, you wouldn't have to put your music in the shared folder. If you wanted.

So when you download stuff with ourtunes, it downloads to the default download directory, as dictated by Safari, I think. Once it's downloaded to whereever it goes, you then add those files to your iTunes Library, where iTunes will organize the files for you by the MP3 (or AAC) tags.
