Movies seen in 2024

Many people didn't watch this week's SNL because the host is a comic who was hired to be in the cast several years ago, but was soon fired after making racist remarks on social media. For some reason, Lorne thought it would be cute to have him back as host...

I was happy to see a distinct lack of SNL-related traffic on SM last night. The only thing trending on my TL was Bowen Yang, because people had this idea that he would protest or something, but it turns out the two were friends then and they still follow each other, and in fact they hugged at the goodnights, so that drama was all in viewers' heads...

But opinions on the show were definitely politics-based. A lot of incels declaring Bowen Yang sucked and was never funny, and why didn't they keep the other guy instead, etc. And then everyone else reacting to these toxic incels. So it was a minor shitshow. But threads like that on Twixxer just make it easier for me to find more accounts to block, lol.

I finished watching "Oppenheimer" last night.

It wasn't what I expected. I appreciated learning of the history that I did not know and it was interesting after watching "Einstein and the Bomb" docudrama on Netflix.

Poor Things (2023) - It's good Disney+ have movies so quickly sometimes. Emma Stone just won the best actress Oscar and, while I haven't seen all the other nominess, I'm pretty sure she deserved it as she was excellent in this. The way her performance changes throughout as her character "grows up" (or whatever you'd called it) is often subtle and always compelling. It's a pretty long movie but it's beautiful to look at and I never got bored. And yeah there's lots of sex but it's important to the plot! It's a great movie.

The flash 2023.

It's not great, but it was good seeing Keaton again.

Sometimes it looked like they got tired of having the split screen with two flashes and just had a really bad CGI Barry for one of them.

Damsel (2024) - I probably shouldn't have watched this. It's clearly not aimed at me (and that's fine!) Look, let's be honest, I watched it for Millie Bobby Brown but I should have thought about it more first. It starts pretty boringly in a generic fantasy land with princess stuff and whatever. I quickly decided to play Switch or surf the internet during it. Then it picks up a bit when Millie's dropped down a chasm and has to escape a dragon (voiced excellently by Shohreh Aghdashloo), but even then there's a lot of crawling around a cave. The special effects range from pretty good to unconvincing. It doesn't excelt in any area (other than dragon voice casting.) I just need to learn that I can't watch everything anymore. I used to think I would live forever and I could just watch anything I was vaguely interested in. I'm old now. My time is precious. Nothing against the movie, it was probably fine, I just need to grow the fuck up.

The Idea of You (2024) - Watched it because Anne Hathaway's in it (and because it's on Amazon.) She plays a 40 year old divorced mother of a teenager daugther who has a romance with a 24 year old boy band member. Anne Hathaway is completely delightful in it and you can see why a boy band guy would fall for her. It's a rom com with some drama, but stays fairly light. I don't really watch these types of movies but it was quite well done as it dealt with all the pitfalls of their relationship and Hathaway had good chemistry with the guy and their relationship was fairly believable. Don't expect anything other than nice romantic fun, really. It was fine, I like Anne Hathaway.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom (2024)

Bullet Train (2022) - Watched it because it was on Netflix and I was bored so I guess that's how you get me to watch things. Brad Pitt is a...guy. Some kind of special agent/criminal guy? Not really sure. He doesn't kill people (on purpose) and he says "dude" a lot. Anyway, he's on a train in Japan with a bunch of other quirky (mostly not Japanese) characters. "Quriky" is what the movie is desperately trying to to. There's constant flashbacks whenever a new character appears or something from the past is mentioned. There's two charactesr with terrible English accents (even though one of them is played by English actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson) who I think are suppose do remind you of a Guy Ritchie movie. There's an evil teenage girl. And so on. It's alright. I found it annoying at first because it was trying too hard, but I guess at least it wasn't boring and had some kind of identity of its own. The CGI train crashes at the end were pretty bad though. I wouldn't strongly recommend it.

Blue beetle 2023

I wanted to like it,I really did, the trailer looked fun, but the characters weren't really engaging, and everything seemed like it wanted to be a cross between iron man and Deadpool.

At least they didn't try and shoehorn Henry Cavill into it

Yeah the animated Blue Beetle on Justice League and Justice League Unlimited was alot better.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) - Rare case of me posting in this thread about a movie I saw in the cinema! I thought it was very good. No, it's not as good as Fury Road but pretty nothing is so that's a pretty irrelevant statement. I did think in the second chapter it went away from Furiosa for too long and became about Dementus, but that was probably necessary to set up the situation with him and Joe. It is pretty bleak and cruel at times but that's all appropriate for the story. The big action scene in the middle on the War Rig with Furiosa starting hidden underneath and ending up in the cockpit was great. There's some bits that don't look quite as nice as Fury Road (the chase at start is a bit worrying) but I either got used to how it looked as it went on or stopped caring. Loved the final showdown between Furiosa and Dementus, Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth were great there. It's a shame it isn't doing better at the box office, there should be more movies like this.

The boat that rocked 2009

It's a comedy film with a good cast, and it looks like the cast were having a great time, but it didn't really come across well, most of the characters are very unlikable.

It's also way too long

Godzilla Minus One (2023) - Japanese Godzilla movie, with a low budget but a good big CGI Godzilla fucking everyone up. Really it's about a kamikaze pilot who didn't die in the war and his struggles, as well as Japan's state after the Second World War. I like the silly American Godzilla movies (well, I haven't watched the last one which I heard was bad!) but it's nice to see a nasty old fashioned Godzilla who'll just fucking step on people and shit. But it's also is very sensitively done with the human character stuff. It's good. I watched the dubbed version and for the most part I think it was convincing, but there were a few lines that felt off or seemed maybe lost in translation, so maybe I should have watched the subittled version for authenticity. TOO LATE NOW.

I just watched Karate Kid with 3 who were alive when it came out and 4 that weren't born yet. Why oh why do I always feel the need to point that out. Like I saw it in a theater. Do I think I am bad ass and I'm going to challenge one of them to a fight now? OMG. Wait for the tournament!

The 20 somethings were horrified! It was hilarious.

I watched Wicked Little Letters tonight. Had to watch it on Youtube. It was a great movie. I loved it.

Hit Man (2023) - Glen Powell plays a criminology professor who works for the police going undercover in sting operations where he plays hit men. He gets very into his characters and starts a romance with a woman (Adria Arjona) who tries to hire him to kill her husband. Complicatons ensue! It's a romantic comedy, I guess, but it takes some very dark turns. I enjoyed it: the chemistry between Powell and Arjona was excellent and it keeps you guessing with its twists. Not sure about its ending (but can't say why because of spoilers) or the way it explicitly spells out its themes during the main character's lectures. But hey it's a fun watch you bastards.
