Adam Silver: Las Vegas 'definitely' an expansion candidate

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said Wednesday that Las Vegas is "definitely on our list" of cities under consideration for expansion franchises. Las Vegas has been mentioned as an NBA destination many times before. The timetable for when the league will add new franchises to its existing group of 30 clubs is unclear. The NBA has another year after this season on its $24 billion, nine-year media rights deal, and Silver has long said that serious expansion talks won't happen until the new media deal is finalized.

Las Vegas already hosts the NBA's primary summer league, has a successful WNBA franchise in the two-time defending champion Aces, has been the site of All-Star Weekend and was where the semifinals and final in this season's inaugural in-season tournament took place. It has been an expansion target for years, and LeBron James has said many times that he wants to own the team that many believe will inevitably come to Las Vegas. Seattle has also been often mentioned as an expansion candidate.

Nashville, Vancouver and Montreal are among the places that have also been mentioned in recent years as cities that would have interest in an expansion franchise. Silver is scheduled to hold his annual All-Star Weekend news conference with multiple news outlets Saturday night.

Vince Carter, Chauncey Billups among finalists for Basketball Hall of Fame

Aerial artist Vince Carter, big shot-maker Chauncey Billups, the smooth-scoring Seimone Augustus and Wisconsin's winningest coach, Bo Ryan, headlined 14 finalists announced Friday for enshrinement in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a part of NBA All-Star weekend.

Carter, a former eight-time All-Star, Slam Dunk champion, Rookie of the Year and Olympic gold medalist who retired in 2020 after having scored more than 25,000 points in 22 seasons, was on hand for the news conference.

Billups, who earned the nickname "Mr. Big Shot" for his clutch performances on the Detroit Pistons, was a five-time All-Star and two-time All-Defensive Team selection. He was the MVP of the 2004 NBA Finals, when his Pistons beat Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Other player finalists included the defensive stopper of the Lakers' "Showtime" era, Michael Cooper; the first Australian, male or female, to play internationally in point guard Michele Timms; three-time NAIA national champion in college with Tennessee A&I University and two-time NBA champion with the New York Knicks, Dick Barnett; and six-time All-Star and the leading scorer in Phoenix Suns franchise history, Walter Davis.

adam silver: nba to reassess g league ignite in wake of nil
This is the fourth season that the Ignite have been in existence. It's a program that was originally created, as Silver said, to provide a path for pre-draft eligible players to be paid to play basketball before being eligible to enter the NBA due to the league's age limit for prospects.

********
The Ignite have gone 6-31 and have the league's worst offensive rating (102.6 points per 100 possessions) and net rating (-12.7 points per 100 possessions) with a roster featuring several players who are draft-eligible prospects.

Unions oppose Wizards, Capitals' planned move to Virginia

Influential labor groups announced Tuesday they are opposing efforts to move the NBA's Washington Wizards and NHL's Washington Captials from the nation's capital to northern Virginia, citing in part an apparent inability to reach a satisfactory deal for union workers on the construction projects. The opposition of the Northern Virginia AFL-CIO and member unions including UNITE HERE Local 25, which represents hospitality workers in the national capital region, creates another hurdle for Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and supporters of a proposed $2 billion deal to move the two franchises from Washington, D.C., to Alexandria. The move would bring Virginia its first major pro sports franchises. But the deal has faced criticism from Alexandria residents concerned about traffic, and from D.C. officials who fear the loss of the team will devastate downtown Washington. News of the unions' decision was quickly highlighted by the Coalition to Stop the Arena at Potomac Yard, another group of critics of the proposal, which called on Youngkin and Assembly leaders to call off the deal.

Steve Kerr inks two-year extension: 'Let's keep it rolling'

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has officially signed his two-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday. Terms of the deal were not released, but ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported last week that it was for $53 million, which makes him the highest-paid coach in NBA history. More importantly for the organization, it aligns him with the two years left on franchise superstar Stephrn Curry's contract. Kerr's deal was set to expire at the end of this season. Kerr's representatives and Golden State general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. have spent months discussing a new deal. While it took a while to get done, Kerr never doubted the two parties would be able to settle on an agreement. Kerr, who has four titles and six NBA Finals appearances, won his 500th game on Feb. 15. That made him the fifth-fastest coach to do so in history. He is also Team USA's national coach.

Hawks waive 15-year veteran guard Patty Mills

The Atlanta Hawks waived veteran guard Patty Mills on Thursday and converted the contract of fellow guard Trent Forrest from a two-way deal to a standard pact. The Hawks acquired Mills from the Oklahoma City Thunder after last season. Mills has played 879 career games with the Potland Trail Blazers, San Antonio Spurs, Brooklyn Nets and Hawks over his career, averaging 8.9 points and 2.2 assists. He won an NBA championship with the Spurs in 2014. Forrest, 25, is averaging 2.0 points, 2.1 assists and 1.3 rebounds in 20 games off the bench this season for the Hawks.

2024 NBA trade deadline in review: Did your team make the right move?

With the All-Star Game behind us, we're now a full three weeks removed from the NBA trade deadline, giving us just enough perspective -- and sample size -- to judge the decisions each team made earlier this month. Did the Milwaukee Bucks actually address their areas of need? Did the Dallas Mavericks leverage themselves too much? Should the Los Angeles Lakers have been more active? We looked at all 30 teams and placed them in one of three categories:

1. Winners: Yes, they made the right moves and decisions. They're better now.
2. Losers: Wrong moves, wrong decisions.
3. TBD: Still too early to tell.
