$500M is the next milestone for LeBron

James has made more than $482 million in salary in his career and will become the first player in NBA history to pass the $500 million mark next season, by either opting in to his $51.4 million salary, signing a new contract with the Lakers or, in a less likely scenario, signing with another team. James said Feb.3 that he has not yet made a decision on his player option. He has until June 29 to decide to opt in or become a free agent. Because of the over-38 rule, no team, including the Lakers, can offer James a contract for more than three seasons if he elects to become a free agent. That restriction should not matter; of the past six contracts James has signed, five have been for three years or less.

Those short-term deals have limited the total value of James' recent contracts, meaning a new three-year maximum deal -- either for $162 million with the Lakers or for $157 million with another team -- would represent the largest total contract in James' career, eclipsing the $154 million, four-year deal he signed with the Lakers in 2018. James could follow the path from prior years and sign an even shorter deal with the Lakers. A two-year, $104 million contract with a player option on the second season would allow James to hit free agency again next summer -- perhaps when his son, USC freshmen Bronny James

NBA memo: Officiating focus among factors in scoring decline

In a meeting with the NBA's competition committee Tuesday, the league office outlined an increased officiating focus on offensive players hunting out fouls and veering off pathways to the basket into defenders -- and how those points of emphasis have impacted a decrease in league scoring, according to a memo shared with teams and obtained by ESPN on Friday. Those officiating focuses -- that were outlined in January and February point of emphasis memos that the league shared with referees and team officials -- are believed to have contributed to a recent decline in scoring. In the memo, the league describes itself as continuing to "evaluate the state of offensive vs. defensive balance with a focus on legal guarding position and level of contact on pathway plays to the basket." Despite a 4-point-per-team decline in scoring and a 1.9 decrease in fouls per team called in recent weeks, league officials told members of the committee that "there was no directive from the league office to reduce scoring," according to the memo. However, the league noted, "This trend will continue to be monitored. Slower pace, style of play, competitive intensity, officiating focus, etc., have all been contributing factors identified thus far." The league also told teams in the memo: "Future evaluation at future committee meetings will determine whether rule and/or interpretation changes should be considered next season."

Rockets top Thunder in OT for 10th straight win, eye play-in

Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta, front office personnel and members of the support staff lined the hallway outside the Paycom Center visitors' locker room, hollering, hugging and high-fiving players after the most surprising winning streak of the NBA season reached double digits. The Rockets extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 132-126 overtime win Wednesday night over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

It's the second-longest winning streak in the league this season, trailing only an 11-game run by the NBA-leading Boston Celtics. It's Houston's longest winning streak since the Rockets won 11 in a row in March 2018, when MVP James Harden led them to a league-best 65-17 record. It was a milestone moment for a franchise in "Phase 2" of a rebuild after enduring the agony of finishing last in the Western Conference the previous three seasons.

Houston (37-35) has realistic hope of playing beyond the 10 games remaining on its regular-season schedule. The win over the Thunder, who were without star guard Shar Gilgeous-Alexander due to a quadriceps contusion, allowed the Rockets to remain only one game behind the Golden State Warriors in the fight for the West's final play-in spot.

Timberwolves owner not selling stake to Alex Rodriguez, Marc Lore

Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor is no longer selling his controlling stake in the franchise to minority owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, he announced Thursday. Taylor alleges Lore and Rodriguez failed to meet certain contractual deadlines and obligations of the sale process, which began in 2021. Sources told ESPN that the relationship between Taylor and his successors -- Lore and Rodriguez -- disintegrated over the past two years. Minnesota (50-22) is having its best season in years and is just a half-game out of first place in the Western Conference. In a statement given to ESPN, Lore and Rodriguez maintained they have met their financial obligations to Taylor, including a final payment last week. In 2021, Taylor agreed to sell the Timberwolves and WNBA's Minnesota Lynx for $1.5 billion, with a structure that called for a transfer of power over a number of years as Lore and Rodriguez made a series of payments.

Stephen Curry 'lets out steam,' lifts Dubs after Green tossed

Since Draymond Green returned from his indefinite suspension in January, the Golden State Warriors have applauded the way he has maintained his fire while managing not to cross the line. He would bark at officials and play with physicality but did so without taking it too far. Until Wednesday night. Green was ejected less than four minutes into the Warriors' eventual 101-93 over the Orlando Magic.

He had been chirping at official Ray Acosta after being called for his first personal foul. A few plays later, after Stephen Curry was called for a shooting foul, Green approached Acosta and began yelling at him. Acosta issued a technical foul, and when Green didn't stop, Acosta gave him another, ending his night at the 8:24 mark of the first quarter.

It was Green's career-high fourth ejection of the season. He is the first player to be ejected at least four times in a season since Kevin Durant was tossed five times in 2017-18, according to ESPN Stats & Information. It also marked the second time Green was ejected in the first quarter this season. According to ESPN Stats & Information, he is the only player with multiple first-quarter ejections in a season over the past 20 campaigns.

lakers nba title ring kobe bryant gifted to farther sells for $927k
The 2000 championship, Kobe's first of five titles, was the only time he gifted his father with a ring. Goldin noted that it is an identical copy of the one given to Kobe: BRYANT etched on one side, with the same sizing (11½), weight (59.6 grams) and etchings. The hotly contested 43-bid auction resulted in the most ever paid for an NBA championship ring.
