New York City in May

Sounds like you had a blast, Eloisel!

Everyone in NYC is nice contrary to what the movies depict. If you want rude, go to Jersey. They're expert at it there.

You're going to enjoy the Old City in Philly.

Didn't mention it earlier but we drove from Boston to Long Island City via Newport, RI. That was a very nice drive and the towns along the way were very pretty places. Loved Newport. Walked around it a bit looking in at the shops and had some lunch.

After NYC drove to Philadelphia. Visited the Liberty Bell and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. My travel buddy was feeling ill earlier in the morning and was feeling even more so at that point so we had to call it a day. Stayed in a nice hotel in Bensalem near a casino.

Next morning we went to Newburgh, NY to get on a boat for a tour of the Hudson River. The city of Newburgh is a bit scary but the waterfront area is very nice with restaurants with outdoor tables covered under awnings. Had a very nice eggplant pargmigian while we waited for The Pride of the Hudson to arrive - which it did on time. Crew was very nice. The boat was full, though not overly so, even though it was pouring down rain most of the time. Would like to have done this tour when the sun is shining but it was still a nice ride. I need a better camera for this tour too. My little Kodak EasyShare can't focus that far, especially on a low visibility day. Did get some good pictures of my travel buddy inside the boat in the enclosed dining/party area.

After Newburgh we headed north for the unplanned part of our vacation. It is beautiful up there. Found a lovely little motel in Hyde Park for the night.

Yesterday we drove through to Red Hook before heading back towards Boston. Drove by FDR's house and the Vanderbilt Mansion before programming the gps unit to take us via no toll roads and no freeways so we had a very nice scenic drive most of the way. Still had lots of rain off and on all day.

Made it back to Boston about 5:30 yesterday evening. Found a hotel in the medical area. Great price, marvelous bed, parking only $20, room at a great rate on Expedia. Ambulances all night long.

Taking it easy around the hotel this morning. About to take my shower and get dressed, pack up the car, fill it up with gas and return the car at the airport. Our flight doesn't take off until 1:35 so we're not in the biggest rush. We're in the Brookline area which is about six miles from the airport but considering the traffic we experienced in Boston the first night we're giving ourselves plenty of time.

Did I mention that the gps unit took me through Manhattan from Queens to the Jersey side through a tunnel to the turnpike to Pennsylvania? It did. OMG!

Next time I come this way - and I will - I am going to fly into NYC and take the public transportation all around NYC and trains to Boston, Philadelphia and everywhere else I can get a train to. It is gorgeous up here. Just seems to rain alot.

Ok. Time to get ready to go. I'm going home!!!!!

You caught a very unusual weather pattern for this time of year here. By this time it's sunny, hot and dry.

Good for you, e! You covered a lot of ground in very little time. I've never been to Philly or R.I. but I can tell you there is so much more to NYC! Now that you've seen how nice folks are in NYC- do plan to go back again one day - at least to take in a play or two!

I'll visit all of those places again but will probably go by myself the next time. As much as I like having a travel buddy, they don't always want to see or do the same things the way I do. Definitely, I'd love to see an on Broadway play.

Plays are awesome. Unlike Hollywood, the actors have on problem receiving the audience after the show (if you know where the stage door gates are) and signing your playbill.

Try and catch the end of a limited engagement too. Sometimes the actors are more "fun" at the last performance.

Ha, Ha, ha ...
my friend who wanted to go to NYC in the first place, when I didn't, and she talked me into going and I loved it while she had a melt down about being back in the place of her miserable childhood and she said she never wanted to go back to NYC again .... well, she just emailed me and said she changed her mind and she'd like to go with me when I go again - in the spring or in the fall. Well, I'm going on a cruise this fall and we're down 3 staffers, have to cover for those positions now and will have to train them when replacements are hired so it may be awhile before I get more time off that I don't already have scheduled ... but, hey, as soon as possible, I'll be more than happy to go to NYC again. This time, though, going to fly into NYC and take public transportation and walk everywhere. Going to take a water taxi often too - that was nice. After driving through downtown Boston on a Saturday night and through downtown Manhattan on a Wednesday afternoon, I can do without traffic for a very long time. And, since girly girl wants to go again, this time I'm going to an honest to goodness Broadway play and she can either go with or find something else to do without me. That girl melts when it gets above 70. What is the best time of year to go when it is cool but sun shiny? I don't mind wearing a jacket but I need sun shine.

Spring is awesome in NYC.
Fly into Newark and taxi in. Hoof it or subway / cabs whatever once you are "inside". Flying into JFK or LaGuardia can be a nightmare with traffic.

If you know when you're going next time, get online and purchase tix for plays way ahead of time. This ensures you get to see the play you want. I went to quite a few over the winter and plan on more soon. I can't get enough of them ever since I was a kid.

I lived out in the LA area back in the mid-80s. Don't have any real big need to go back out there. Chicago - don't know so much about. I'm taking a cruise out of Galveston to the Yucatan and Cozumel in September. Going to try and take a few days and go to Seattle and the Ho Rain Forest soon. I've lived all over the south, southeast, southwest and in Colorado. Now I've been to the northeast so I'd like to get in a big sweep of the northwest too. After that, I'd like to get to Egypt and a few other destinations overseas.

What is fun in Chicago?

I'm not going to travel with this last travel buddy so much in the future. Might travel some with my new boyfriend though. He is a painter/artist and enjoys museums and live theater.

Go to NY with the artist then! You'll have a much better time and see more fun things.

Let me know if you're into dive bars too. I know a bunch of awesome hang outs.

Woa, I think there is a conversation going on in this thread. I didn't know people did that here.

It's nice right?

Why do people think that when you come to this site you are required to behave like an asshole?
