Source: Panthers owner, Jim Harbaugh talked coaching job

Panthers owner David Tepper has had a conversation with Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh about the opening Carolina will have for the head-coach position once the 2022 season ends, according to a league source. The conversation was not characterized as an interview, the source said. Interviews will not begin until after Carolina (6-10) finishes the season under interim coach Steve Wilks on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Wilks, according to league sources, is considered a strong candidate for the full-time job after replacing Matt Rhule following a 1-4 start and putting Carolina in position to win the NFC South before a Week 17 loss at Tampa Bay. Harbaugh's career as an NFL player actually ended with Carolina in 2001. He was signed midseason and dressed for six games, but never played a down for the 1-15 team.

NFL approves plan for possible neutral-site AFC title game

NFL owners have approved a plan that leaves open the possibility of a neutral-site AFC Championship Game and could determine home-field advantage for a wild-card game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens by a coin flip. In the wake of the cancellation of Monday's Bills-Bengals game, the following scenarios based on Week 18 results were approved for holding the title game at a neutral site:

• If Buffalo (12-3) and Kansas City (13-3) both win or tie, a Bills-Chiefs championship game would be at a neutral site.
• If Buffalo and Kansas City both lose and Baltimore wins or ties, a Bills-Chiefs championship game would be at a neutral site.
• If Buffalo and Kansas City both lose and Cincinnati (11-4) wins, a Bills or Bengals vs. Chiefs championship game would be at a neutral site.

Postseason offers Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy chance to respond to critics

The playoffs are now here -- and the Cowboys are coming off their worst performance of the season in Sunday's 26-6 loss to the Washington Commanders. The 12-5 record doesn’t seem to matter. It was hardly inspiring and left more questions, with Dak Prescott getting intercepted for the seventh straight game (including his third pick-six in the last four games), several special teams miscues and a defense that could not do enough to affect fifth-round rookie quarterback Sam Howell, who was making his first start. For the next week, they will have to live with that performance before taking on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round of the playoffs next Monday (8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN/ABC/ESPN+). McCarthy was hired in part because of his postseason success: a Super Bowl win and four trips to the NFC Championship Game as coach of the Green Bay Packers. His expectations are high, but no coach has won a Super Bowl with two different franchises; only six have taken two different teams to the title game.

Damar Hamlin collapses on field; Bills-Bengals temporarily suspended

Bills safety Damar Hamlin was taken off the field in an ambulance after receiving treatment for over 10 minutes, which resulted in the game between Buffalo and the Cincinnati Bengals being suspended until further notice Monday night. CPR was administered to Hamlin on the field for multiple minutes after he collapsed on the field following a play in the first quarter. He appeared to be receiving oxygen as he was placed in the ambulance and taken off the field some 16 minutes after he collapsed. The injury took place after Hamlin tackled wide receiver Tee Higgins and quickly got up afterward. He then abruptly collapsed with athletic trainers coming to help immediately. A stretcher was immediately brought to the field as athletic trainers protected his head. However, instead of resuming play, Bengals coach Zac Taylor walked over to Bills counterpart Sean McDermott and met with game officials present. The decision was then made to pause the game -- which the Bengals were leading 7-3 -- some 21 minutes after the injury.

Atlanta would be neutral site for Bills-Chiefs AFC title game

A potential AFC Championship Game between the No. 2-seeded Buffalo Bills and No. 1-seeded Kansas City Chiefs would take place in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the NFL announced Thursday. The game would take place at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Jan. 29. All other potential AFC Championship Game matchups would take place at the home stadium of the higher seed, the league said. The neutral site will be used only if both the Chiefs and Bills advance that far, as it was decided by the league that the two teams participating would have to have played an unequal number of games, and both could have been the No. 1 seed had all AFC clubs played a full 17-game regular season.

NFL regular-season ratings saw a 3% decrease from last season, which was not unexpected with "Thursday Night Football" moving from Fox and NFL Network to exclusively airing on Amazon Prime Video.
