Panthers name Sam Darnold starter vs. Broncos

In the revolving door known as the Carolina Panthers quarterback position, Sam Darnold will become the team's third different starter in as many weeks Sunday against the Denver Broncos at Bank of America Stadium. The team made the announcement Tuesday after interim coach Steve Wilks told his quarterbacks he will go with Darnold instead of Baker Mayfield, who had two passes intercepted and failed to get the Panthers (3-8) into the end zone in Sunday's 13-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Darnold was 4-7 as the starter last season and had a Total QBR of 38.6 that ranked ahead of only those of Zach Wilson (33.4) of the New York Jets and Justin Fields (31.4) of the Chicago Bears. Mayfield was the first pick of the 2018 draft and Darnold the third.

Cowboys, Giants meet as push for Odell Beckham Jr. intensifies

Thursday's game between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants might be the Beckham Bowl. They are among the teams to have an interest in adding free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. for the stretch run as he comes back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in the Super Bowl. The Cowboys have not been shy about their recruiting efforts, and Dak Prescott said he has exchanged messages with Beckham.

Brett Favre scandal explained: Ex-NFL QB is accused of

misusing of Mississippi state welfare funds

Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre is in hot water for his connection in the Mississippi welfare scandal involving the misappropriation of roughly $77 million. Favre -- who has not been criminally charged -- has denied knowing that the money he received for different projects was welfare money. Court filings, text messages and tax records show the complexity of the situation. The Mississippi Department of Human Services filed a lawsuit in May 2022 against 38 defendants, including Favre. On Nov. 28, his attorney Eric Herschmann filed a motion to dismiss. "It is apparent that MDHS has sued Favre, a Mississippi and national celebrity, in an effort to deflect responsibility for its own egregious wrongdoing in allowing $94 million of its public funds to be misspent — funds for which MDHS itself admits it was 'exclusively responsible,'" reads the filing.

Text messages from Aug. 3, 2017 show Favre asking MCEC founder Nancy New about privacy regarding payments to him.

"If you were to pay me is there anyway the media can find out where it came from and how much?" he asked.

She reassured him that the information would not be made public. The next day, she told him that Bryant was on board with their plan. New and her son, Zach, pleaded guilty to 13 felony counts relating to the scandal earlier in 2022.

Giants, Cowboys or Bills: Where will Odell Beckham Jr. land?

The Odell Beckham Jr. derby is heating up, with the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants believed to be at the front of the pack. But don't count out the Buffalo Bills. Beckham is scheduled to meet with the Bills on Friday, though the Giants and the Cowboys seem most likely to land the coveted free agent. The two division rivals are pitted against one another off the field after the Cowboys dominated the Giants in the second half on Thanksgiving. Beckham is believed to be close to full health after tearing the ACL in his left knee in the Super Bowl win with the Los Angeles Rams in February. It has been nine months since the injury, and he's expected to sign with a new team in the next few weeks.

Two-time All-ACC WR Josh Downs leaving North Carolina for NFL

Two-time All-ACC wide receiver Josh Downs is leaving North Carolina for the NFL, he told ESPN. Downs is the No. 4-rated wide receiver in the upcoming draft, according to ESPN NFL draft analyst Todd McShay, making him one of the top receiving prospects available for NFL teams. Downs had back-to-back seasons of more than 1,000 yards receiving for the Tar Heels and caught 22 career touchdown passes. In just three seasons at UNC, he rose to No. 4 on the school's all-time receiving list (2,483) and No. 2 in touchdown catches. He will not play in the San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl against Oregon.
