The Edmonton Oilers signed free-agent forward Scottie Upshall the 34-year-old to a professional try out Sunday.

Nashville Predators, Philadelphia Flyers, Arizona Coyotes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers and St. Louis Blues.

In 53 playoff games, he has 5 goals and eight assist.
 
First-round draft pick Alexander Alexeyev has signed a three-year, $2.775 million entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals.

The 18-year-old from Russia was taken with the 31st overall pick in this year's NHL draft.
 
The Edmonton Oilers announced Thursday that they have acquired defenseman Chris Wideman from the Ottawa Senators for a 2020 conditional sixth-round draft pick. Wideman, 28, has two goals and three assists in 19 games for the Senators this season.

The 28-year-old St. Louis native and former Miami University star had 16 goals, 27 assists, 98 penalty minutes and a plus/minus rating of plus-7 over 175 games in four seasons with Ottawa. The pick was previously acquired by Edmonton from St. Louis for defenseman Jakub Jerabek on Oct. 1
 
The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed center Jake Guentzel to a five-year contract extension with an average annual value of $6 million.

The deal begins next season and will tie Guentzel to Pittsburgh through the 2023-24 season.
 
The NHL has suspended Boston Bruins forward David Backes three games without pay for an illegal hit to the head of New Jersey Devils of forward Blake Coleman.

Based on his salary, he will lose almost $220,000. The league considered Backes a repeat offender.
 
Alex Ovechkin, who was named the Captain of the Metropolitan Division team for the All-Star game on Jan.26, has informed the NHL that he will skip the festivities to rest for second half of the season.

The 33-year-old Washington Capital captain leads the league with 29 goals. Ovechkin was looking at his eighth All-Star appearance.
 
The New Jersey Devils has given head coach John Hynes a multiyear contract extension.

Hynes, 43, led the Devils to their first playoff appearance in five years last season.

Hynes overall record since being hired in June 2015 is 125-122.

The Devils record is 15-17-7 in 2018.
