Simone Biles handles pain, leads U.S. in Olympic qualifying

Simone Biles briefly left the floor with what she said was discomfort in her left leg but continued her quest to return atop the Olympic podium Sunday, posting an all-around score that was more than three points ahead of U.S. teammate Suni Lee through two subdivisions of qualifying. Biles, 27, dazzled during her opening beam routine then briefly left the floor with USA team doctor Marcia Faustin. Biles returned a short time later and spent several minutes sitting and watching her teammates. U.S. gymnastics coach Cecile Landi said the issue popped up a couple of weeks ago and described it as minor. Landi said there was no discussion of pulling Biles from the event. Biles received a 14.600 on floor, the highest of the day so far and assuring her a spot in the event finals next week.

She scored 15.800 -- by far the highest in the world this year -- and followed it up landing her Cheng vault with no major problems, though she was noticeably limping as she made her way back to her seat. In the Americans' first event, the balance beam, Biles drilled a difficult acrobatic series, her score of 14.733 easily the best among the four Americans. The final event, uneven bars, was Biles' lowest score at 14.433, but her total of 59.566 was easily ahead of the field. The only adjustment Biles made was deciding to skip attempting a unique skill on uneven bars that she had submitted to the International Gymnastics Federation on Friday.

Kevin Durant comes off bench in U.S. Olympic opener vs. Serbia

Kevin Durant made his return to Team USA for Sunday's Olympic opener against Serbia at the Paris Games and showed what the Americans were missing with him out. Durant entered the game in the first quarter and made his first shot attempt, a 3-pointer, then went on to have a perfect shooting half, going 8-for-8 from the field (5-for-5 from 3) to lead all scorers with 21 points at the break. USA Basketball announced that Durant would be available to play about an hour before the game. Durant wasn't in the starting lineup after coach Steve Kerr indicated Saturday that the Phoenix Suns tar might come off the bench in his return. Durant missed all five of the team's pre-Olympic exhibitions with a calf strain. He originally got hurt a few days before the team convened in Las Vegas for training camp in early July and had returned to full practice last week. He is bidding to become the first four-time Olympic men's basketball gold medalist. The all-time U.S. men's leader in Olympic scoring was on the teams that won titles at the London Games in 2012, the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016 and the Tokyo Games in 2021.

Olympics 2024: Canada coach 'likely' knew of drone spying - COC

Canadian Olympic Committee CEO David Shoemaker said new information from Soccer Canada showed suspended women's coach Bev Priestman was likely aware of the drone use that has caused a scandal at the Paris Olympics. The COC removed Priestman on Thursday after her suspension by Canada Soccer. The decision followed complaints from New Zealand that Canada flew drones over two of their training sessions before the two sides met in their opening Olympic fixture, which Canada won 2-1. Canadian sports network TSN reported that drone use predates the 2024 Olympics, with two sources with first-hand knowledge telling TSN the team had filmed other opponents' closed-door training sessions, including during the Tokyo Olympic tournament.

Olympics 2024: Canada file appeal over spying points penalty

Canada Soccer and the Canadian Olympic Committee have filed a joint appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport over the six-point deduction handed down by FIFA for drone spying at the Olympic Games in Paris. Canada women's soccer coach Bev Priestman was suspended from coaching for one year in addition to the points penalty after soccer's governing body investigated charges that Canada staff members used a drone to spy on New Zealand's closed practice session last week. "The appeal is based on the disproportionality of the sanction, which we believe unfairly punishes the athletes for actions they had no part in and goes far beyond restoring fairness to the match against New Zealand," Canada Soccer said in a statement. Canada could still advance to the quarterfinals in the 12-team tournament even with a loss in court and win on the field Wednesday. Two third-place teams in the three groups will go to the knockout stage.

Chinese women beat reigning Olympic champion U.S. in volleyball

The U.S. women's volleyball team had a bad enough start in its Olympic title defense. It managed to keep it from turning into a disaster. The Americans lost the first two sets to China on Monday in a pool play format where total points and sets won can become playoff tiebreakers. China's eventual five-set victory -- both teams scored the same number of points -- left the reigning champions with a sense of relief. The Americans only lost one match in pool play in Tokyo and did not lose a set in the knockout stage en route to their first gold medal. With eight holdovers from the 2020 champions, they arrived in Paris as the fifth-ranked team in the world.

Summer McIntosh, new swimming stars win gold at Paris Olympics

Swimming's next generation of stars claimed the spotlight at the Paris Olympics on Monday night, a brash group that comes from all over the globe. Summer McIntosh, the 17-year-old phenom from Canada. David Popovici, a 19-year-old from Romania. Mollie O'Callaghan, a 20-year-old speedster who took down her mighty Australian teammate, Ariarne Titmus. Throw in an Italian gold medalist, and another from South Africa, and it was clear that swimming's reach stretches far beyond the traditional powerhouse, the United States. In all, 10 different nations divvied up 15 medals on this night. McIntosh claimed the first gold medal of her rapidly blossoming career with a dominating victory in the 400-meter individual medley. Popovici won a stirring duel to take the men's 200 freestyle, which featured three different leaders on the final lap. Then perhaps the biggest surprise of all: Titmus, the world-record holder and defending gold medalist in the women's 200 free, was knocked off by O'Callaghan.
