PARIS 2024 SUMMER OLYMPICS

U.S. survives 'Hard moment' vs. Belgium to reach Olympic quarters
Wilson finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds, her second double-double in as many games, but did have six turnovers plus three steals. Breanna Stewart played her trademark game, running the floor to create a string of transition opportunities. She ended with 26 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

**********
It was the Americans' 57th consecutive Olympic win and will assure them a spot in next week's quarterfinals. But this one will be a little more memorable than others and offered a lesson that Team USA will need to tighten its form to assure an eighth straight gold.

U.S.woen's 3x3 basketball ends skid, men still winless
Reigning champions the United States finally got a win on the board in their fourth game of the women's 3x3 basketball pool stage at the Paris Olympics on Thursday with a 17-11 victory over Spain. - By contrast, the U.S men suffered two more defeats, 20-18 to Lithuania and 21-19 to Tokyo champions Latvia, who remain the only unbeaten 3x3 team in Paris at the end of day three.

**********
Both U.S. teams remain rooted to the bottom of the pool standings with their prospects of qualifying directly for the semifinals looking bleak.

The International Olympic Committee on Thursday defended its decision to allow two female boxers to compete at the Paris Olympics despite an ongoing gender controversy, saying the pair were facing "aggression" because of an arbitrary decision. Algeria's Imane Khelif, who won her round of 16 welterweight bout over Italy's Angela Carini in 46 seconds, and Taiwan's double world champion Lin Yu-ting, who is fighting on Friday, have been cleared to compete in the Olympics.

Khelif and Lin were disqualified by the International Boxing Association at the 2023 world championships after failing an unspecified gender eligibility test. The IBA was stripped of its recognition by the IOC last year over governance and finance issues, and the Olympic body is now running the boxing competition in Paris.

The IOC said the IBA decision to disqualify the boxers last year was arbitrary and the main cause for the furor that has seen people such as British author J. K. Rowling and billionaire Elon Musk voice their opposition to them competing in the Games. "These two athletes were the victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA," the IOC said in its statement. "Towards the end of the IBA World Championships in 2023, they were suddenly disqualified without any due process.

Boxer Imane Khelif clinches Olympic medal amid gender outcry

Boxer Imane Khelif of Algeria clinched a medal Saturday at the Paris Olympics following days of sharp scrutiny and online abuse as controversy about her gender have exploded into a larger clash about identity in sports. Khelif defeated Anna Luca Hamori of Hungary 5:0 in the quarterfinals of the women's 66-kilogram bout. Khelif will win at least a bronze medal after defeating Hamori for the second victory of her tumultuous second trip to the Olympics. Khelif has faced international scrutiny after the International Boxing Association claimed Khelif failed an unspecified eligibility test for women's competition last year. She then won her opening bout Thursday when opponent Angela Carini of Italy tearfully abandoned the fight after just 46 seconds.

At a Paris Games that has championed inclusion and seen an outcry over an opening ceremony performance featuring drag queens, LGBTQIA+ groups say the comments could pose dangers to their community and female athletes. Both had competed in IBA events for several years without problems, and the Russian-dominated body -- which has faced years of clashes with the IOC over judging scandals, leadership decisions and financial issues -- has refused to provide any information about the tests, underscoring its lack of transparency in nearly every aspect of its dealings, particularly in recent years. Khelif will clinch at least a bronze medal in her second Olympics after failing to medal at the Tokyo Games held in 2021.

Simone Biles earns 7th gold after dominating vault final

Simone Biles is getting kind of old for this. Just maybe not too old to keep going. Maybe. Minutes after the American gymnastics star won the seventh Olympic gold of her career on Saturday in a vault final that left little doubt that even at 27 she remains in a class by herself, she played coy when asked if the event marked the final time she would ever explode off the springboard in competition. Biles has 10 career medals, tied for the third most by a female gymnast in Olympic history. Two more before she heads back to Texas and she would find herself all alone in second behind Larisa Latynina, who piled up 18 while competing for the Soviet Union in the 1950s and '60s.

Boxer Lin Yu-ting clinches medal amid Olympics gender dispute

Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting has guaranteed herself a medal after securing victory over Bulgaria's Svetlana Kamenova Staneva in the women's 57kg quarterfinals Sunday. Lin has been the subject of an ongoing controversy in this year's Olympic boxing event, after the International Boxing Federation (IBA) claimed at last year's world championships that she and Algerian fighter Imane Khelif failed an unspecified eligibility test, although it has not given further details. The pair are allowed to fight under guidelines over gender eligibility by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which said Sunday the tests conducted by the IBA were not legitimate and lacked credibility after Khelif and Lin were "carted off and tested" because there were "suspicions" against them.

Lin, who is the No. 1 seed in her weight class, achieved similar success Sunday, winning a scrappy fight against Staneva. She is now guaranteed at least a bronze medal, with the chance to fight for gold next Saturday should she win her semifinal bout against Turkey's Ezra Yildiz Kahraman on Wednesday. In Sunday's bout, Lin opted to sit back and try to strike from range. She was also warned for elbowing by the referee early on and twice fell to the canvas after appearing to be tripped by Staneva. The Olympic sport reached gender parity for the first time in Paris, inviting 124 men and 124 women just 12 years after women's boxing made its Olympic debut.

Nigeria women's basketball reaches Olympic quarterfinals with historic win

Ezinne Kalu scored 21 points as Nigeria made Olympic history by becoming the first African team, men's or women's, to reach the Olympic quarterfinals in basketball when it beat Canada 79-70 on Sunday. The Nigerians (2-1) now wait to learn who their next opponent will be. They already have doubled their number of wins in pool play, coming to France looking for their first Olympic victory since the 2004 Athens Games. Five countries came in already having clinched berths, led by the U.S. -- which is trying to win an unprecedented eighth straight Olympic gold -- along with Spain, Serbia, France and Germany. The draw setting the quarterfinals follows the final game between Australia and host nation France. Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games and went winless in Tokyo. This women's team was denied access to Nigeria's boat for the opening ceremony on July 26, and now it will play Wednesday in Bercy Arena on the banks of the Seine River.

Jamaican sprinter Shericka Jackson pulls out of 200 at Olympics

Jamaican sprinter Shericka Jackson, the defending world champion in the 200 meters, pulled out of the women's race Sunday and will not compete for an individual medal at the Paris Games. Jackson, who is the second-fastest woman of all-time in the 200, had previously withdrawn from the 100 meters, saying it was partly because of a leg injury she suffered in a tune-up race last month. It is unclear why she pulled out of Saturday's race.

Jackson's exit deals yet another blow to the Jamaican women, a perennial Olympic powerhouse that had captured 15 of the 24 Olympic medals in the 100 and 200 between 2008 and 2021. All three sprinters from Jamaica's 100-meter sweep in Tokyo have been absent in Paris. Elaine Thompson-Herah, the 100 and 200-meter champion, shut down her season earlier this year with an Achilles injury. Jackson, who won last year's world championships in 21.41 -- only .07 off Florence Griffith Joyner's 36-year-old world record -- ran a pedestrian 22.29 at her country's Olympic trials in June.
