Republicans hate the poor.

The Question

Eternal
Why do I say that? Because Republicans are trying to reform welfare, SNAP in particular, to curb fraud and abuse of that system. It's not the poor they hate; it's forced redistribution of wealth into a system rife with corruption.

But, no, let's go with the angle consistently played by those who favor that corruption: Republicans just hate the poor.

Democrats, on the other hand, absolutely love the poor -- that's why they're working so hard to make sure the ranks of the poor just keep growing.

And if you're against public gang rape to entertain the poor, you hate the poor, too. :)

Republicans may or may not hate the poor. Conservatives, on the other hand, despise the poverty mindset.

And that is their problem -- they look upon it as a 'mindset', as if it's something people plan to achieve.

Poverty is a circumstance -- America's refusal to deal with the problem in a proactive, humane way is what turns it into a habit for some of its victims.

It's not so much something that people 'plan to achieve' as it is something that is taught and passed down, abuse of the system that is.

Well, here's the first problem. Instead of "curbing" the programs for all to find "fraud", why don't they establish means to detect fraud and remove those recipients?

The bottom line here is they want to abolish all entitlement programs. Including SS and Medicare, which aren't entitlements at all. But conservatives like to hide behind the claim of "weeding out fraud" the same way they like to hide behind religion to practice discrimination against gays.

The thing is, I could actually respect them for being honest about the issues if they were just douche bags following their misguided beliefs. However, they've compounded the problem by being both douche bags and lying about the reasons for it.

Which just proves my point that the current approach of shaming and ghettoizing these people is wrong. That will just make it worse because it makes them feel even more disenfranchised.

And this "them" that people speak of are not the majority of recipients. That's another conservative bullet point.

Poverty is a circumstance, but it's not a problem government can solve. It's a function of reality, in exactly the same way that not everyone is going to be tall. It's a relative condition. The only way government can solve shortness is by chopping varying amounts of leg off people until everybody's equally short; the only way it can solve poverty is by punishing success and ambition so that nobody is prosperous. I'm not saying let people starve in the street -- but keeping the unambitious and unskilled comfortable doesn't help them. It never did and it never will.

Ayn Randian bullshit. (LOVE YOU!) This lopping of legs analogy is a fallacy.

But your last sentence fairly agreed with my point, that simply giving out benefits without giving hope or a view of opportunity isn't working.

If people are unskilled, skill them. If government shouldn't do that, who should? They're poor so they can't pay for college or tech school. I suppose you wouldn't want education to be any more affordable either, which rules that out for them.

This conservative climate of not passing any jobs or infrastructure programs in Congress is what's keeping the system down. FDR created the middle class with all of the postwar jobs created BY THE GOVERNMENT. Everyone prospered, rich and nonrich. But then the rich got greedy, and tired of having to actually make things for a profit, and suddenly finance became off-track betting. The greed has gotten completely out of control, and just because people are used to being greedy doesn't absolve them from having to change their outlook. BE BETTER HUMANS. The rest is just paperwork.

I remember when people receiving grants from entitlement programs (Welfare, etc.) got free college educations and job training. Is that not still happening?

Vermont had a job training program for people ages 16-24 not tied to welfare years ago. Mom had wanted me to go through the program but I was 25 when she told me about it.

I knew a woman in Arizona back in the late 80s who was on welfare and a ton of other entitlement programs who also received a free college education for a career she did not intend to use. She said that she would lose her benefits if she worked and she couldn't rely on keeping a job. She received benefits for three children at that time. They'd all be grown now. Don't know how much benefit she gets now that she doesn't have dependent children.

I also knew a woman living in Arkansas back in the late 90s who received a $90,000 college education along with free housing, food stamps, welfare, health care, and other benefits. She did use her education and now supports herself very well.

Back in the 70s we had vocational education in high school. Students got credit towards graduation as well as job skills and experience in vocational education class. We had auto body shop, auto mechanics, cosmetology, and maybe others. I know I got credit for teaching fourth grade math for a semester and credit for working on a couple of local newspapers for two years while I was in high school. As so many people know, it is hard to get a job without experience and hard to get experience because no one will hire you.

^ My sister, 48 years old, is doing the same thing. She receives benefits for 3 kids with Autism. Two of whom are now adults. The trick is, you go to court and have the kids claimed as fully dependent on the parent and the parents receive benefits for the life of the kids. She's pulling down about 4 grand a month free and clear.

The thing is, she used 80 thousand dollars in government loans to get two masters in autism related education and hasn't worked a day in her life. Has no plans to ever pay back the loans, screams bloody murder when the DOE takes her tax returns because she's defaulted on them, gets free medical for her and the kids, gets 800 a month in food stamps, and brags to everyone about how good she has it.

Her husband is a worthless piece of shit that also refuses to actually work. He intentionally gets jobs with less than 20 hour weeks and minimum wage so their benefits don't get docked.

Now for the ultimate kicker. She's a staunch religious conservative who hates Obama and screams about welfare fraud. She's got the attitude that because of her kids, she got handed a lemon in life and because of it, the churches, her friends, her family, and society in general owe her a living.

Since my father passed away three years ago, I've been made as my mothers power of attorney and estate executor. And it has been a constant 3 year battle to prevent her from taking financial advantage of my mother at every turn. Because she can't handle money, my sister was evicted from three places over two years. For the last year, she and her kids have been living at the family cabin under the agreement that she was supposed to pay 600 a month and find a place to live as soon as possible. Neither of which she has done.

The ditzy bitch voted straight conservative the last round of state elections and voted for Romney in the last Presidential. And brags about.

Can someone please explain the completely fucked up mental processes that drive people like that?

God, that rant felt good. I genuinely can't stand the bitch.

I wish I knew the answer to that. We need programs to help people who can't help themselves. Unfortunately, those same programs are abused by people who won't help themselves. It is bizarre to me how much effort they expend to not expend effort.

So far as Republican or Democrat - conservative or liberal, we know all to well that all institutions harbor bad actors.

Your mother is fortunate that you have control of her interests. I have a friend who was in the same situation until her mother died earlier this year. Her relatives would have fleeced her mother and not felt the least bit ashamed of themselves for leaving that poor old woman with nothing to live on.

That was cathartic to read. Thanks.

Very true. Both parties have their bad apples and in reality, they both have a very similar agenda and that's themselves. However, as I've often stated in the past, there is one very big difference between the parties.

Republicans want all of the countries wealth in the hands of themselves and the top 10%. And they really don't care who they have to hurt to accomplish it. Democrats on the other hand want the same thing, but, they want to leave us common folk just enough so that when we decide it's time to storm the castles with our pitchforks and torches, it's not their gates we're knocking down.
