Star Trek 12 news/countdown thread

I want to smell dark matter
Hey, it comes out Summer 2013. That's next year! After The Hobbit: Part 1 but before The Hobbit: Part 2! So let's start talking about it!

And there's been loads of casting news so it's easy just to link to TrekMovie.

I don't really know who she is except she was going to play Emma Frost in First Class but got dropped out and was replaced by January Jones. Maybe she's playing CAROL MARCUS.

Why couldn't they cast Freema Agyeman instead (they're both black and were Doctor Who companions!)

THE BIG ONE...

Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing both Smaug and Khan(!?) in the same year? He's a good actor so it's good news I think. Probably bad news if you want more Sherlock.

I heard Benedict Cumberbatch has signed up - nodoby is sure who he'll be playing (likely a bad guy). I welcome his casting in this more than Sherlock, which I just can't get into.

Yeah, today was a good day to be a Trek fan.

Noel Clarke being cast is nice because he's actually quite a serious actor and director but a lot of people still associate him with RTD's terrible, terrible writing (and a carnivorous wheelie bin), so it's good he'll get some exposure beyond Who and those films about council estates.

But I'm SO excited about Benedict Cumberbatch being cast. He's really good in everything and he seems to pick his roles fairly carefully, so hopefully he's read the script and thought it was worthy of his attention. Good point about it meaning there probably won't be more Sherlock, unless they can squeeze in another one before Trek filming starts. The only reservation I have about his casting is that it could lead to yet another bad guy with an English accent, but who knows, he could do some other accent.

And the HD footage looks great. The model work in particular looks a lot clearer, though we are certainly going to see the downside in any closeup shots of Worf or aliens of the week. And there's nothing that can be done to make the alien in The Dauphin look better.

There's a bit of buzz on Tumblr about Cumberbatch playing Trelane. If so I'm simultaneously annoyed and excited.

Excited because YAY! Q continuum. Or at least something akin.

Annoyed because Q should've been in a Trek film three or four films ago.

They're just guessing based on physical appearance I would think...I can't imagine a Q type villain in a movie, it'll always be someone trying to blow up Earth/Kirk/whales.

The photoshopped pics of him as Trelane are quite well done, but I've never personally liked those all powerful characters. The only way the crew can win is if Q or whoever lets them. Even if they find a loophole in whatever rules he sets out in the little game he plays with them, it's still dependent on him being mature enough not to just change reality to make it so they lost instead. It's the same reason superman's the least interesting superhero.

Hey, a bunch of screenshots: http://www.blu-raydefinition.com/re...generation-the-next-level-blu-ray-review.html

I'm very excited to get the taster disk in just over a week but less excited to probably pay around £80 for each season on blu-ray.

I can't wait for that DVD (I don't say Blu-ray, I say DVD). Everything that's been released has looked perfect.

Eventually, though, it's going to start stretching the suspicion of disbelief that they always keep the same klingon data file open!

There are definitely going to be moments when the injokes become outies. I mean, there's one episode that shows a list of shuttles that includes the Indiana Jones, but until now we've only had photos of the props to go on. Now you're gonna be watching a tense scene involving Picard being tortured, only to spy that the Cardassian is reading about the Beegees on his padd.

Holy shit, scratch that last concern. They redid the LCARS. Presumably they will for every episode when it's important, too.
