Starfleet Academy - It's Happening

This is BHP in a nutshell.

We've spent many years evolving the MF into a forum where you didn't have to ignore people. But Pooch has decided not to read the room and say "it's TK so be as big a dick as possible" -- which literally nobody has even bothered to expend that energy here in years. It's like someone still trying to fight WW2 -- dude, look at a calendar. The war was over a long time ago. That's my only point to make here.

I'm sorry... I didn't know having a viewpoint different than the majority constituted being a dick.

A pretty good opinion piece detailing the timeline for the tardification of modern Star Trek. A good read.

You can safely ignore anybody blaming anything on "diversity quotas" since all the hires at the decision making level in Hollywood are nepotism or coke-buddy based. I don't think anybody else here is truly dumb enough to buy what people saying that shit are peddling.
I tried watching and checked out after about 10 minutes or so because teen dramas are lame. I still talk about it because
a) I love Star Trek and am at the very least still morbidly curious about the future of the franchise
b) Watching multimillion dollar enterprises fall face first on a spinning chainsaw is my way to cope with the ongoing end of the world
c) I think it sucks that few enough people care that the loudest voices are right wing losers
d) the concept of a "star trek teen drama" is up there with "super badass section 31 team doing war crimes for the greater good" in the pantheon of anti-Star Trek Star Trek Shaped Product

You can bet if they make Star Trek: Cop Show I'll be all up in here shitting on it more furiously than The Beer Hall Pooch does this show, and I'd do it better.

So, this point: naw it happens.

For example, that's what killed Amazon's WH40K series. They had actor diversity quotas they injected into the mix that went totally against the lore, so Henry Cavill walked on it (in case you're curious... the Adeptus Custodes are all male according to lore, but Amazon wanted some female ones... Cavill, who is probably on the spectrum, got pissed off. That's why GW is making female Custodes figures now and gaslighting its customers).

Vikings: Valhalla replaced a well known Scando jarl with a black woman.

Both Helen of Troy and Joan of Arc are now black, in case you didn't know.

So, yeah... diversity quotas are a thing, BUT... Roddenberry played the same game in the 1960s except better. He put a racially diverse crew on the bridge because, as Uhura put it "we've learned to be delighted with who we are." That's not the same as saying "race doesn't matter."

Building on that, he went against some racial stereotypes... putting a black woman on the phone, having a Japanese guy driving, etc.

Dude was psycho, but creative. We need more of that, not erratic shitlibs like Kurtzman.

It is of course fine to post negatively about something you don't watch to a certain extent (I've done it, I'm sure) but at some point you're inevitably going to have nothing new to say. People who do watch a show are going to want to read posts by other people who watch it without having to scroll by half the posts in the thread being the exact same point made again and again and again and especially without having to scroll by the absolute dirt worst unfunny Facebook memes in the history of the universe. I've only ever put one person on ignore in my 25 years on this board, but the health of my scrolling finger is becoming a concern.

The SAM/EMH stuff was great. Artistically done and very emotional. I was surprised they linked back to that episode of Voyager though. Not exactly a fan favourite even if it was relevant. They’ve been hinting for a while that the Doctor was traumatised by outliving people important to him and I’d hoped when the time came to address it he’d be talking about the Voyager crew.

I don't know if that one incident with Belle was supposed to be the sole reason he's so traumatised, or if we're supposed to think he hasn't gotten close to anyone else in 800 years. Certainly he was getting close to the Prodigy crew before its unfortunate cancellation. I think it's that Sam in particular triggered that memory of Belle, so there's still room for him to reveal how much it hurt when Naomi Wildman died aged 145 or whatever.

Naomi Wildman was my favorite Trek kid.

A hundred years ago when I posted on an extinct forum, there was a guy who didn't watch Battlestar Galactica. He stopped by every week to complain about the show. He made the mistake of admitting that one of his favorite shows had been Miami Vice, so every time he complained about BSG I just replied "Miami Vice". GOOD TIMES. Anyway, idc if someone hates this show or not. I don't think it's great, but sometimes I think I can see the potential. It's not nearly as bad as Discovery was, and I watched the whole thing! lol I don't mind teen drama when they don't dumb it down to the idea of what someone thinks teens will like. I don't want to watch Saved by the Bell in space.

And yet they keep trotting dumb stuff out every week to stimulate conversation.

Well, two more episodes and then we get a breather until the final season.

Nerdrotic or maybe Critical Drinker will probably have a season finale watch along party. I'll post it here.

No thanks.

The last ever episode of Miami vice had Chakotay in it, which is where I knew him from before Voyager.

No thanks.
It will be live and will have a chat.

Open chats are fun... especially if you have multiple YT accounts.

Probably the highlight too.

That also sucked. Don Johnson was a douchebag I just wanted to shoot.

No evil villain dialogue... just walk up and shoot him.
