Stargate Universe

Just watched the pilot and really enjoyed it! I haven't seen Stargate since C4 stopped showing it a few years back, so I'm not really familiar with current developments (like why the Goa'uld were attacking - last time I watched an ep they'd started to join forces with Earth to take on the Replicators), but it was great to be back in that universe. Pleased to see the Tapping and RDA as well, although RDA's appearance was rather distracting for reasons that have already been mentioned (pies).

It was quite BSGish in style, but I think they took the best parts of that series and added them to what Stargate already does well, which is humour and a sense of the show being at ease with itself.

I did think Robert Carlyle's character was a bit too much like Baltar, being a coniving, bearded, long-haired Brit surrounded by well meaning Americans. But hey-ho, he wasn't as annoying as he could have been. Maybe he was more mysterious than necessary, though. It seemed like he was just an arse sometimes to generate a bit of drama and tension.

Not much to say about the other characters, besides Eli, who I did like. The medic kept reminding me of Scarlet Johansson, the daughter of the senator was a bit meh, the main dude was fairly plain but attractive and the black guy who'd been put in detention (lol, racism) was annoying.

Any show that decides to show sexual deviants like homos/lesbians should be banned pronto, and the production company that came up with it should have its headquarters blown to pieces. We do not need that kind of filth in our world. All fags/dykes should be destroyed.

Watched the third episode just now... still pretty good quality. Didn't entirely understand the alien sand devil at first, as I thought it was rubbing out everyone's footprints. The thing about the plain guy's priest/guardian was a bit... fuzzy? They didn't develop it enough to make the last scene really have any impact. Did like Meh's side of the story, though.

Agreed with Dual about those redshirts who went off to the other planet. Stargate loves picking up on old storylines just when you've forgotten all about them, although this will probably be addressed faster. That craft at the end must've been the ship's way of retrieving the missing crew. If it really cared that much, then it could've just opened the gate to that planet, though.

They'll probably decide to override the gate and go after them. I'm pretty sure I saw an ad for an episode where they're on a lush green world, and some of them are arguing to stay.

I can't remember their names yet! Not even "the attractive guy" or "Robert Carlyle's character"!

From IMDb:
On an episode of SG-1 Daniel Jackson's step son, Shifu, appeared on Abydos as a whirlwind of sand before settling into human form. He also taught Daniel the danger of Goa'uld memories being passed along via a dreamlike delusion state. I was wondering if the sand devil wasn't an Ancient keeping an eye on the team.

Ah-h-h-h. Well, that's not good for NEW VIEWERS, is it? Though like I said it was ambiguous in the episode anyway if it was an alien or just an hallucination.

I just watched an episode.
I don't see the point of the show.
Except the two big boobed military women.

An inoperative stargate strands a bunch of people in a remote part of the galaxy?
Voyager/BSG?

And what's with Lou Diamond Philips switching places with that other guy? I don't get that.

Well a few people remember it, so maybe it was a group hallucination.

Just watched episode 4 and really enjoyed it. I love this show! Rush did reach new heights of annoyingness in this ep, and he was completely unsympathetic until the end when the one that looks like Scarlet Johansson woke him up (who's actually CALLED Johansson, WTF?!). Good cliffhanger. Think they might do a Data in Cause & Effect and use an explosive decompression to change their course, then replenish the lost oxygen on the planet.

Some people on IMDb are complaining about the slow nature of the show, but I think the pacing's just perfect. The almost real-time feel helps you feel more like you're there. Better than those shows where the next episode is suddenly set three weeks later and you've missed a whole load potential character development.

Speaking of other shows, one thing I notice is it seems to have shades of Virtuality and Defying Gravity. Both ships with psycho/angry crew members on ships all alone in space, but with methods of instant communication with home. Thankfully this show isn't going to get canceled, though.

Anyone else think of Groundskeeper Willy when Dr Rush was going off? lol

I really despise Lou Diamond Phillips character, because they are writing him in a really shitty way. You don't just pop onto a ship in the middle of a crisis and start barking orders! How the fuck does he even know enough of what is going on to think that he could take the command away from whatshisface? Seems like a smart general would be taking the time to find out exactly what's going on so he can help figure out what they need to solve their immediate problems. Also, it'd make A LOT more sense if there was a scientist familiar with ancient technology, like Daniel Jackson, waiting to switch places instead of an angry know nothing general. Leadership isn't their biggest concern right now, survival is. Fixing the ship should come before military politics.

Well, all that made it sound like I hated the episode, but I didn't. It had some interesting parts, they were just overshadowed by the stupid things I noticed.

Yeah, I don't like that character either. He's an arsehole just for the sake of creating dramatic tension, just like Rush is. Hopefully there'll be some explanation down the road.

OH AND ONE MORE THING.. what's the deal with the big (fake) boobed chick? Did they just throw that in there for the hell of it? The camera focused on her erect nipples! lol
