So this era of Star Trek is coming to an end, and it occurred to me that it's so quiet. Back in 2005 there was an effort to save Enterprise to no avail but this time it just feels like everybody's sort of shuffling their feet and looking at the floor.

Is everything coming to an end? The interest in the next Star Wars movie is underwhelming. We're farther out from the next MCU movie, but I'm not going to say people are clamoring for it. Or whatever's next for Bond.

With SW it's the Disney Cartel effect. It's trapped in a Disney box, where it has to fight for proper promotion with all the other acquired franchises. Marvel, Doctor Who, SW have all become devalued by having to compete with each other for budgets and promotion.

The Muppets were DOA until they greenlit the new Muppet Show special, which also served as a pilot for a reboot. But will Disney give them the money, space and time to make every episode as good as the special was? Probably not...

As for Trek, it's anybody's guess what the new regime will want to do with it...

I'm not sure it's a good idea to keep things running in perpetuity. Remember when "franchise fatigue" was the excuse for Enterprise 20 years ago? Multiply that by about 1000 and that's what's happening across the board. Gotta keep trying to milk that cash cow though I guess.

The biggest challenge would be entrusting the franchise to someone who can create new content that is still recognizable as Trek. A lot of the new content literally torched any obligation to resemble Roddenberry/Berman Trek by jumping in time to a post-annilihation Alpha Quadrant. The TNG era stretched Roddenberry's ideas but didn't break them. If you can't produce interesting Trek stories without connecting it in some way to the franchise's core ideas/principles, then work on something else.

But giant media cartels with shareholders care less and less about such things, so we'll see.

6 shows (and one terrible tv movie) in under ten years is a lot.

Look, I'm all in favor of new material. I love SNW probably the best out of all the newer stuff, so it's possible to do that. Others will disagree maybe, but it swings for the fences. I loved the musical and pretty much everything that show has cranked out so far. I'm not sure if it's because I have this affinity for TOS and the Pike era or what, but there hasn't been a single episode I disliked. It seems like an almost perfect blend of TOS and TNG to me. The rest of the shows and movies are just kinda there.

I feel like the whole "legacy sequel to ancient property" thing peaked with Tron Legacy for some reason, lmao. Yeah though, the tepid disinterest in stuff seems to be across brands and franchises these days.

I mean, each show has seasons consisting of like 10 episodes these days so that sounds like more material than it is.
