The Gul's Psychotic Break/WF Implosion Banpool...

Profiling^.

Damn right! If you come home and all the snails have disappeared from the yard, somebody's drank all the water out of your toilet and your dog is pregnant, you go right to le mothair-fuckair in the beret and the stripey shirt, haw haw haw haw!

(Point being that profiling works. You do what works.)

I wasn't saying it doesn't.

I just like pointing it out.

Here's the thing: Your brother is fighting against two liberal policies--forcing employers to pay someone more than they're worth and permissive policies with illegal aliens.

If you've got to pay someone $15 an hour--even if they aren't worth that, the employer is going to find another solution if possible--like McDonald's new kiosks. More on that later. Let's not forget that $15 an hour isn't $15 an hour. Because the employer also has to chip in half to FICA and Social Security and pay workman's comp insurance. On top of that is the Obamacare health insurance mandate and pretty soon your $15 an hour employee is costing more like $30 or 45 an hour.

On the other hand, if Pablo will wash dishes for $5 an hour cash, well, the math is simple. Even with a risk of fines. And with a government that is turning loose violent drug felons, and declining to prosecute for serious crimes, is that really a big risk?

I mention dishwashing because that was my first job. Interestingly, the second dishwashing job I took, the boss hadn't realized I was over 16 and he'd have to pay me minimum wage. When he found out, he fixed my paycheck--and mysteriously, I didn't have any hours after that. Huh. Funny. And this was when minimum wage was, like, $3.50 an hour.
Sounds like you had a shitty boss and you dodged a bullet, there.

McDonald's is losing money because no one is eating fast food anymore. With delivery services that pick up from actual food place, why bother getting off your ass and drving for some glorified pink slime? They'll need automation soon enough just to stay in business, even if the federal wage stays the same. Survival of the fittest, baby. ;)

Here's the other thing: I don't go to McDonald's for a fine dining experience. I go because I want to put calories into my face hole that take less than 5 minutes and $5 to get and that taste the way I expect them to.

McDonald's is already stepping on their dick because at least a couple of the ones I've gone to can't take an order quickly and competently and turn it around quickly to get me out the door, whereas Burger King can. And BK has onion rings. If it's going to take me 10 minutes and cost $10 to get 2 burgers and a small fries, they're absolutely dead. I don't need a fucking McCafe or whatever other upmarket moves they're trying to make. McD's is a slightly differentiated commodity.

I thought I'd be excited for the return of the Mcrib. But, after one bite, I wasn't. Maybe my taste buds have become more refined. Maybe it's because I don't smoke weed anymore.

I just hope the Arby' s sliders never go away.

Oh, and by the way, Volpone's point above was solid. When government meddles in the market, specifically in the cost of labor, all it does is fuck things up. A burger flipping job never was, is not now, and never will be worth more than employers are willing -- on their own -- to pay for it. When you get government stepping in to jack up the cost of labor, you're going to see the demand for that labor dry up and blow away like ash.

Would you pay $50 for a Big Mac? Fuck no, you wouldn't. Well, the franchisees aren't going to pay $15/hour to some career Nobody to thaw 'em out, warm 'em up, bag 'em and pass 'em through a drive-through window, either.

Government isn't mandating a "living wage"; all it's doing is killing employment opportunities for first-time employees. Is that fact "mean"? Is it "unfair"? Well, guess what -- the real world doesn't give a fuck about what's nice or mean, fair or unfair. The universe has no moral compass, it just has uncaring facts and ice cold, rock solid dynamics, and there you go.
