Hahaha you need to watch the second season then. They do a very good job of explaining what Crusher has become and tying the events into the events that lead up to Picard S1. I actually found Wesley kind of annoying in Prodigy (they seemed to be trying to make him The Doctor [Doctor Who, not the EMH], even don’t to having a sonic screwdriver type thing I think).
Still his touch of madness made some sense! But I thought Chakotay got a more thoughtful story.

To be fair, its kinds clear in Assignment: Earth that all Gary Seven is, is a more suave Doctor Who, which thus makes sense for Wesley to just be closer to the more goofy kind. Also the device he has is called a servo and was also introduced with Gary Seven in that episode. Even Tallinn has one as well in Picard S2.
