Dominick Joins CNT Athletic Training Staff


Mark Dominick, UNCW's Athletic Trainer for the baseball program, will join Team USA's athletic training staff when the Collegiate National Team opens its training camp on Wednesday in Cary, N.C. Dominick recently completed his fifth season with the Seahawks and will be joining the Collegiate National Team for a second time. He served as the team's athletic trainer last summer as the Stars and Stripes toured the Appalachia League before taking on Team USA's Olympic Team before the Tokyo Games. Dominick joins a staff that is headed up by Mike Bianco, who earlier this month guided Ole Miss to its first College World Series title with a two-game sweep of Oklahoma. Josh Porter of Ole Miss will serve as the Head Athletic Trainer. Team USA will compete in exhibitions from June 30-July 4, in Cary, Durham and Charlotte. The team will pare down the roster from 50 to 26 before competing in the Honkbalweek Haarlem, July 8-15, in Haarlem, Netherlands.

Indoor Volleyball Releases 2022 Schedule


UNCW will open the 2022 season hosting Virginia Tech, Davidson and Coastal Carolina in the Seahawk Classic on Aug. 26-27, Seahawk Head Coach Dottie Hampton announced on Wednesday. The Seahawks, who welcome seven newcomers to the program for the 2022 season, take on Virginia Tech in the second match of the day on Aug. 26 and will close the tournament with two matches against Davidson and Coastal Carolina the following day. UNCW will play in the second of three tournaments to open the season the following week at Liberty on Sept. 2-3. The Seahawks face Murray State in the tournament's opening match on the 26th. Winthrop rounds out that weekend's tournament field.

UNCW's road schedule consists of Northeastern (Oct. 8-9), CAA newcomer North Carolina A&T (Oct. 22-23) and Delaware (Oct. 29-30). Home dates in conference play include Hofstra (Oct. 15-16), Elon (Nov. 5-6) and another CAA newcomer in Hampton (Nov. 12-13).

Sims Makes NBA Summer League Debut


UNCW men's basketball great Jaylen Sims has a big weekend ahead when the Charlotte native takes the floor with the Toronto Raptors on Saturday afternoon (July 9, 2022) for the franchise's opening 2K23 Summer League game in Las Vegas. "The opportunity to play for the Raptors organization in the Summer League is a great honor," said Sims. "I'm blessed to be playing with such a great organization, and I'm learning a lot." A gifted 6-6, 210-pound guard, Sims led the Seahawks in scoring (16.4 ppg), rebounding (5.5 rpg) and assists (2.4) as the team went 27-9 and won the 2022 Roman College Basketball Invitational. The versatile performer earned First-Team All-CAA honors when the Seahawks earned a share of the regular season title and was later named CBI Tournament MVP following UNCW's dramatic run to its first postseason championship.

CAA Honors 230 Seahawk Student-Athletes


The Colonial Athletic Association's Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll for the Spring, 2022, semester features 230 student-athletes from UNCW. A total of 2,747 student-athletes were recognized early Monday by conference officials. Six different UNCW teams placed at least 20 student-athletes on the list, while nine programs reached double-digits in honorees. Recipients must participate in a CAA-sponsored sport, attain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 during the designated academic term and be enrolled as a full-time student.

Men's Hoops Receives CAA Opponents For 2022-23


With new members Hampton, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T and Stony Brook in the Colonial Athletic Association's mix, the UNCW men's basketball team now knows where its conference games will be played in 2022-23. The CAA unveiled the men's basketball conference opponents for the new season early Thursday. Dates and times will be announced at a later date. The Seahawks will meet Charleston, Elon, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T, Stony Brook and William and Mary twice during the regular season. In home games, UNCW will face Charleston, Elon, Hampton, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T, Stony Brook, Northeastern, Towson and William Mary only.

Road tilts are scheduled against Charleston, Elon, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T, Stony Brook and William and Mary.

Suggs Agrees To FA Contract With Nationals


Former UNCW standout Matt Suggs has agreed to a free agent contract with the Washington Nationals and will begin his professional career this summer. Suggs earned honorable mention All-CAA honors as a catcher in 2022, finishing among the Colonial Athletic Association leaders in home runs (13) and runs batted in (48) while leading the Seahawks in both categories. Suggs started 50-of-51 games this past season and finished with 150 career games played with the Seahawks. During his tenure, the Seahawks captured the CAA tournament championship in 2019 and advanced to the CAA championship game in 2021. With 26 career home runs, Suggs finished 16th in home runs at UNCW and was hit by pitches 30 times, tying for eighth all-time in the program.

Baldwin Tabbed By White Sox


UNCW infielder Brooks Baldwin was selected in the 12th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday. Baldwin was selected by San Francisco in the 2021 draft but returned to UNCW where he was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Player of the Year while making a move from the outfield to second base. As a red-shirt junior last season Baldwin led the CAA with a career-high .348 batting average and 116 total bases. His slugging average of .621 was second overall in the league. He finished the season with 13 home runs and stole 16 bases, marking his second consecutive season with double figures in each category. In addition to his CAA honor, Baldwin was also a first-team All-CAA selection and earned second-team All-Atlantic honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association.

CAA Tennis Champions Add Four Recruits


The UNCW men's tennis team racked up its eighth Colonial Athletic Association championship last spring and will add four key newcomers as the Seahawks defend their title in 2022-23. The Seahawks have signed Camilo Cano (Armenia, Colombia), Bryson Cook (Sewickley, Pa.), Alex DeGabriele (Naxxar, Malta) and Juan Jose Vargas (North Santander, Colombia) to complete the roster for the upcoming season. The Seahawks have captured eight CAA titles and made nine NCAA appearances since DuBois overhauled the program in 2007-08.

Seven Home Meets For UNCW Swimming & Diving


Highlighted by home meets with three ACC schools and Tennessee, UNCW head swimming and diving coach Bobby Guntoro has announced the Seahawks schedule for the 2022-23 season. The David B. Allen Natatorium will play host to Duke, Georgia Tech and North Carolina in the fall portion of the season along with Army-West Point, William & Mary, Tennessee and Campbell for a total of seven meets, all coming in the first three months of the season.The Seahawks will host Army-West Point in the season opener for both programs on Sept. 24. UNCW swept the Black Knights to open the 2021-22 season.

Diamond Hawks Earn ABCA Academic Honors


UNCW's baseball program has been honored by the American Baseball Coaches Association with its Team Academic Excellence Award for the 2021-22 academic year.The Seahawks were honored earlier this month as the Colonial Athletic Association's top academic program after posting a combined grade point average of 3.31.Teams that earn the academic honors must post a GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale. UNCW has earned the designation in each of the last three seasons and five times since the award began in 2015-16.

Seahawks Down Coastal In Home Opener


Jordan Faveri and Kayla Burroughs headed in two first-half goals to push the Seahawks past Coastal Carolina, 3-1, in Sunday night women's soccer action at UNCW Soccer Stadium. The Seahawks improved to 2-1-1 this year with their home-opener victory. The Chanticleers stumbled to 0-2-1 on the young season.

Seahawks Tune Up For CAAs at ECU


In their final appearance before the Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships in two weeks, UNCW placed seventh in the 8K men's race and sixth in the 6K women's competition late Friday at the ECU Invitational. Held at scenic Lake Kristi, site of the 2015 American Athletic Conference XC Championships and the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional XC Championships from 2002-05, the race featured 10 men's teams and nine women's entries. The Seahawks next compete in the CAA Championships on Oct. 28, 2022, in Newark, Del.

Seahawks Picked Fifth, Phillips Recognized


The UNCW men's basketball team has been picked to finish fifth by the Colonial Athletic Association's head coaches ahead of the 2022-23 season. The Seahawks, who earned a share of the CAA regular season crown and went on to capture the championship of the College Basketball Invitational one year ago, were chosen to wind up behind Towson, Hofstra, Delaware and Charleston in the preseason poll released by the CAA early Wednesday. It marks the fourth time (2005-06, 2006-07, 2017-18, 2018-19) that the Seahawks have been tabbed to finish fifth in the preseason poll. UNCW was predicted to finish ninth last season before turning the tables on the experts in a memorable season that was capped by the championship of the CBI in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Senior guard Shykeim Phillips (South Central HS/Winterville, N.C.) was named to the All-CAA Preseason Second-Team after averaging 11.3 points and 3.8 rebounds last year. The Winterville, N.C., product was selected to the CAA's All-Defensive Team in 2021-22 following a stellar junior campaign.
