Where is the Random Thread of Randomness stuff that doesn't belong in other threads thread?

Just making progress on my battle with belly fat when a friend comes to visit and leaves behind an assortment of leftover restaurant hamburgers and fried food. Manage to get through that and settling down to get back on track when my neighbor texts me she won a German chocolate cake at a raffle and asks if I want a slice. (Of course I have no one to blame but myself for my failure to limit myself to 2 drinks a night of late.)
Fuck it. Worked so hard. Knocking on 170. In spite of the work and suffering, I weighed myself before bed tonight. 178 or so. I'm just going to chain Daisy Ridley to my couch in a bikini and call it good.

Apparently, as a civilization, humanity has lost the technology to make a reliable wind-up alarm clock. They get shittier at a geometric rate. When the last one failed after maybe a couple months I was resigned to just go buy a battery one next time I was at a store that actually sold alarm clocks. But I was also cleaning out and organizing my basement and found a corded Batman alarm clock. The Bat-signal second hand had come off but a few seconds with a Swiss Army Knife and I had the faceplate off and the second hand repaired. I'm not a huge fan of house power for an alarm clock but hell, it's been in a box for who knows how long and it is still more reliable than any modern wind-up alarm clock. I am fucking Adama. They're not actually wired up (and apparently you can't get a circuit switched landline in 2024 America for any amount of money) but I have a corded phone in my living room and another on the wall in my kitchen. I will use any means necessary to keep the '09 Mustang running because I hate traction control, ABS, and computer cameras everywhere. I just need me a dot matrix printer--and to get the old W2K desktop up and running again and run some CAT5 to a hub or a switch or something. SO SAY WE ALL!

Getting old sucks. For most of my adult life I've honestly been able to say I was 5'10". I was 5'9.5" but by rules of rounding, that's 5'10". I've done an Indiana Jones cosplay that was pretty good so at some point I decided to see how tall Harrison Ford is (especially since actors tend to be shorter than they're portrayed). 5'10". Great. But then I realized he was in his late 70s so I looked up how tall he was in "Star Wars." Something like 6'1". He's shrunk 3" as he's aged. Being in my early 50s, I decided I'd better measure myself. 5'9.25" By rounding rules, I'm now 5'9".

Well since I realized my body fat had gotten away from me (just a bit) I've been looking at the BMI charts. They say I'm overweight. I mean, they say over 70% of the US population is overweight--or worse--but still, it annoyed. I've been making slow progress but yesterday I decided to measure myself. I mean, maybe I screwed up last time, right? Possibly. This time it turns out I'm just a hair UNDER 5'9". :( Getting old sucks. (And yes, I measured twice and it was the same each time.)

Oh, 2 BMI caveats: 1) While my height is now accurate, I'm actually about 5# lighter than my scale reads (so actually probably not "overweight" by BMI standards), but my scale has been calibrated that way for so long that it's easier to just leave it alone. 2) BMI charts aren't particularly accurate--especially for athletic people. Daniel Craig was 5'10" and 180# for "Casino Royale." By BMI chart standards, that puts him like, 11# overweight, but if you remember the photo of him in the swim trunks, I don't think anyone's going to say he was fat.

The trouble with exercise is, when you get to where you can do an exercise easily that doesn't mean you're done, it means it is time to increase the weight/reps to where you can't do it easily anymore.

Also, exercise makes you feel sore and tired. But if you DON'T exercise you also feel sore and tired, but you're also fat and listless.

Last time I checked the BMI chart it said my ideal weight was 184#. I'll never get that skinny. I'll be happy if I can lose 80-90 pounds and be 220-230 like I was in college 30 years ago.

My country is so unused to having prolonged hot weather that it's doing weird things, my front door is harder to lock during the day, a brick fell off the wall in my shed.

Also harder to sleep.

Today I totally get the trope of Old People going to bed at 8pm and getting up at 5am: As you get older, you underestimate what you can get done in a day before being physically exhausted, so pretty soon you find yourself going to bed before 10:30. But you still only really need 7 hours of sleep, so you wind up waking up at 5:30.

The foundation on my house is white and it should be grey. I've known this since I moved here, over 3 years ago, but I've never had the time to paint it. Finally got to work on it this week and it is kicking my butt.

I came about 2 millimeters away from emailing my ex and bitching her out almost 30 years after our breakup. Please talk me out of that.
Yeah don't do that. I got a letter from the gf I had before I met my wife about a year and a half ago. Haven't thrown it away yet, but have successfully resisted the urge to respond in kind. She wanted to re-establish communications (after 45 years no less) and be "friends" again.

Just don't do it.

Went to see 38 special in concert last night at a Food Truck Festival. Went to bed about 1130pm woke up a few minutes ago. Still feeling like I need more than about 7 hours. Feeling so sore and old.
I go to bed early on the days I e-bike. Like yesterday we drove up to Craftsbury and biked all the way through Greensboro to Glover. Places in Vermont I've never seen and it was exhilarating. About 22 miles. Totally keeps the weight off. Fell asleep in my wife's arms around 9 ish and woke up at 630. Looking forward to a lovely day off today and tomorrow as well.

I've been getting up stupidly early lately, like 3 or 4 am early for some WFH stuff. Big ass storm rolled through this morning around 1 and nearly blasted me out of bed so I just went back to sleep and got up an hour ago.

On a scale of 1-10, my Rage will be at 0 when I start walking my dog and by the time we get home it will be at 52.
