Reports - WNBA to get $200M per year; union exec concerned
The WNBA's current media deal, which is valued at about $60 million per year, is set to expire after the 2025 season. The NBA, which owns about 60% of the WNBA, has negotiated the new deals. The new revenue could greatly increase player salaries, which has been an issue for many years.

WNBA eyeing expanded 44-game season in 2025

The WNBA is considering expanding its regular season to 44 games for the 2025 campaign, commissioner Cathy Engelbert said Saturday before the league's All-Star Game. Forty-four games per team are the most allowed under the current collective bargaining agreement, although in the long term, Engelbert has discussed the vision for extending the season even longer. More total games also are on the horizon for the next two seasons with expansion franchises in Golden State (2025) and Toronto (2026) beginning play. The regular season currently is 40 games per team.

The WNBA is amid one of its most memorable seasons, as it has witnessed its highest attendance in 26 years, has set new viewership records and has seen a surge in merchandise sales and intensified fan engagement. Much of that growth has been spurred by the current rookie class, headlined by college-stars-turned-pros Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, both of whom came here as All-Stars.

Ten predictions for the rest of the 2024 WNBA season

To paraphrase the old saying, we make predictions and the basketball gods laugh. WNBA teams' fortunes can turn quickly -- for the worse due to injuries or a tough stretch of the schedule; or for the better after injured players return or something finally clicks for groups. With just 12 teams in the league, there is talent everywhere. And for the most part, tanking has not been an issue like with other sports. You can expect to see teams play hard until the end of the regular season on Sept. 19, then the top eight move on to try to win the championship. Can the Las Vegas Aces still three-peat? Can anyone challenge A'Ja Wilson as MVP? Will the Rookie of the Year race stay tight? Here are 10 predictions from Alexa Philippou and Michael Voepel for the rest of the WNBA season, which resumes Aug. 15, after the Olympic break.
