With 12 teams and a maximum of 12 roster spots (teams often carry just 11 players due to salary cap considerations), it's always very difficult for many of the draftees to make a roster. But they will all go to training camps with high hopes.

After 'whirlwind' stops, Griner seeks leverage 'bigger' platform for good
With Griner's name having been amplified through social media, the news and by word-of-mouth while she was detained in Russia for 10 months, she's as well-known as some of the celebrities she met over the weekend.

Giner's back, Taurasi healthy--how good will Phoenix be in 2023?
The fact Griner was isolated thousands of miles from home with no certainty of when she might return weighed emotionally on the Mercury and the entire WNBA. - Taurasi, who turned 40 last June, was often much like her old self in 2022, averaging 16.7 points and 3.8 assists in 31 games. But a quad injury caused her to miss the end of the regular season and the playoffs.

The Mercury finished the 2022 season at 15 -21. The Mercury have missed the playoffs just twice in the past 16 years, and not since 2012.

Brittney Griner makes unofficial return for Mercury
The crowd of 4,563 gave her a standing ovation when she was introduced before the game, and a group of fans near the tunnel gave her an ovation as she walked off the court at halftime. One fan yelled to her: "Glad you're back!"

The Mercury open the regular season on Friday in Los Angeles against the same Sparks, in a nationally-televised game. Two days later, Griner will be back in Phoenix for the team's home opener.

WNBA eyes leaguewide talks after Aces case, commissioner says

The WNBA will continue to work with its teams and coaches regarding its respect in the workplace policies following the punishments levied on the Las Vegas Aces and coach Becky Hammon, league commissioner Cathy Engelbert told ESPN's Malika Andrews on Thursday. The league said the violations came from promises of impermissible benefits during contract extension negotiations with Hamby, while a respect in the workplace violation was regarding comments from Hammon to Hamby related to the player's pregnancy. Both the Aces and Hammon have said they were disappointed in the league's decision. Hammon on Wednesday said the investigation did not speak to any current Aces players who were with the team last year.
