WWE SmackDown results, recap, grades: Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns sign on to face The Bloodline at Bad Blood
Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns fought over WWE's top prize across two consecutive WrestleManias. Now they'll team together to overthrow the faction Reigns started, The Bloodline. This major development happened on Friday's season premiere of WWE SmackDown. SmackDown's return to the USA Network started with a steel cage match for the undisputed WWE championship. Rhodes defended his title in a SummerSlam rematch against The Bloodline's new Tribal Chief, Solo Sikoa. By night's end, Rhodes joined forces with his greatest WWE rival. Friday's episode of the blue brand also featured developments in the WWE women's and United States title pictures.
Michin def. Piper Niven via pinfall after hitting Sole Food. Green and Niven laid out Michin post-match.
Kevin Owens and Randy Orton def. A-Town Down Under (Austin Theory and Grayson Waller) via pinfall after Orton hit a stunner on Waller. Orton was Owens' mystery tag team partner.
Nia Jax challenged Bayley and Naomi to a tag team match next week against Jax and Tiffany Stratton. If Bayley and Naomi win, they get a WWE women's title shot at Bad Blood. If Jax and Stratton win, the babyfaces must leave SmackDown.
Andrade def. Carmelo Hayes via pinfall after hitting an avalanche version of his finishing move, The Message. LA Knight anointed Andrade as the next United States title challenger.
WWE SmackDown results, recap, grades: Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns have tense encounter before Bad Blood
Roman Reigns gave Cody Rhodes his word that he'll watch his back at Bad Blood, but don't expect the pleasantries to continue afterward. WWE SmackDown planted the seeds for a renewed feud between the WrestleMania rivals. Rhodes and The Bloodline were central to SmackDown on Friday. The undisputed WWE champion met with Reigns the night before but took the fight to The Bloodline without him on this week's show. Fortunately for Rhodes, Solo Sikoa's faction has made plenty of enemies in recent weeks. The blue brand also teased more friction between Rhodes and his friend Kevin Owens, featured a terrific United States championship match and more.
States Championship -- LA Knight (c) def. Andrade via pinfall with a BFT. Andrade and Hayes got into a scuffle backstage.
Apollo Crews def. Giovanni Vinci via pinfall with a flash rollup. Vinci attacks Crews post-match with a vertical brainbuster.
Bayley and Naomi def. Nia Jax and Tiffany Stratton via pinfall with a double pin. If Bayley or Naomi scored a pinfall, they would earn a WWE women's title shot against Jax at Bad Blood.
SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis booked a No. 1 contenders match between Bayley and Naomi next week.
For weeks, Sami Zayn had called out Gunther for a shot at the world heavyweight championship. Zayn got his show in the Raw main event on Monday night but he was unable to find the victory over the champion as he had when the pair met earlier this year at WrestleMania. Zayn showed plenty of heart, the very quality that allowed him to end Gunther's record-setting reign as intercontinental champion in April, but ultimately couldn't withstand Gunther's offensive onslaught before passing out in the champion's sleeper hold. With the win, Gunther will now turn his attention to Crown Jewel and a champion vs. champion match with Cody Rhodes.
Zayn didn't make it easy but Gunther is still the world heavyweight champion

WWE SmackDown Results
CM Punk kicked off the show with a brief promo. Punk admitted he was physically too banged up to even walk to the ring but wanted to thank those who love him, his peers and those who hate him because without all three he wouldn't have the success he has achieved in moments like defeating Drew McIntyre inside Hell in a Cell.
Seth Rollins came to the ring, bumping into Punk on his way out. Rollins said he was wishing Punk a speedy recovery so he could send him into retirement. Punk then turned his attention to Bronson Reed, saying he wanted a match anytime, anywhere.
Intercontinental Championship -- Jey Uso (c) def. Xavier Woods via pinfall with an Uso Splash. After the fairly short match, Kofi Kingston shook Uso's hand and Uso tried to do the same with Woods, but Woods walked off. Woods was frustrated with Kingston and the pair argued when Bron Breakker ran in to attack Uso. Woods refused to help, while Kingston ran in only to also get taken out by Breakker. Woods eventually ate a spear as well as he tended to Kingston outside the ring. Breakker refused to answer why he attacked Uso when asked backstage.
The Miz confronted Karrion Kross and told him he didn't turn on R-Truth last Monday for anyone other than himself. Truth then entered and told Miz they could fix whatever the issues are before Miz challenged him to a match next Monday.
Sheamus def. Pete Dunne via pinfall in a Good Ol' Donnybrook Match. After some big spots and weapon use, Dunne zip-tied Sheamus' hands behind his back. Despite this, Sheamus managed to hit a Brogue Kick to score the pin and win the match.
Lyra Valkyria, Kayden Carter, Katana Chance, Zelina Vega & Natalya def. Unholy Union & Pure Fusion Collective via pinfall when Valkyria hit Sonya Deville with a top-rope leg drop.
