A special New Year's Revolution branded episode of WWE SmackDown promised to determine the No. 1 contender for the undisputed WWE universal championship. Roman Reigns, Solo Sikoa, Jimmy Uso and Paul Heyman tried to make sure that wouldn't happen. Friday night was headlined by a triple-threat match between AJ Styles, LA Knight and Randy Orton. Each man had a bone to pick with The Bloodline but none willing to wait their turn. The match was meant to determine who would challenge Reigns at the Royal Rumble. Reigns and company had other ideas. This week's episode also crowned a challenger for Logan Paul's United States championship, featured a WWE women's title defense and the return of a long-absent tag team.

Title challengers AJ Styles, LA Knight and Randy Orton found common ground on WWE SmackDown and laid out The Bloodline. Reigns' "Island of Relevancy" might consider more diplomacy in the future. SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis punished The Bloodline for repeatedly ruining main event matches. The match was booked after Theory and Grayson Waller interrupted Hayes' negotiations with Aldis.

Cody Rhodes and Bayley both made their decisions for who they'll challenge at WrestleMania XL during this week's WWE SmackDown. Bayley finally revealed she knew about Damage CTRL's bullying and will now face Iyo Sky for the WWE women's championship, ending her time with the Damage CTRL faction she personally created. Meanwhile, Rhodes made the shocking call to not have a rematch with Roman Reigns for the undisputed WWE universal championship. Instead, he's going to let someone else take a crack at "The Head of the Table" -- The Rock. The show went off the air with "The People's Champ" finally sharing the ring with his cousin, setting the stage for one of the biggest WrestleMania matches of all time.

- Bayley picks Iyo Sky as her WrestleMania XL opponent, breaks away from Damage CTRL. A backstage segment earlier in the night showed Iyo Sky, Kairi Sane and Asuka talking smack about Bayley, only this time it was in English and Bayley heard the whole thing from behind a door. Later in the night all of Damage CTRL (sans Dakota Kai) were out in the ring for Bayley's announcement. After mulling her options, Bayley hits Asuka, Sane and Sky with some Japanese words, confirming she knew about them talking behind her back for months. She confronted Sky and asked what happened between them, only to get jumped from behind by Sane and Asuka. She beat the two away with a metal pipe, stopped short of nailing Sky and announced they'd meet at WrestleMania for the WWE women's championship.

A power struggle is brewing on WWE SmackDown. Levesque kicked off SmackDown on Friday to support Rhodes' rightfully earned rematch against undisputed WWE universal champion Reigns. The Rock isn't joking around. Dwayne Johnson released the sequel to his iconic 2003 in-ring concert on WWE SmackDown but it's his disturbing closing address that will be remembered most. The Rock kicked off SmackDown on Friday by roasting his WrestleMania 40 opponents Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins. The musical number got a chuckle out of fans; however, it didn't hold a candle to The Rock's more serious statements. Much of the WrestleMania 40 card was filled out on Friday night. Solo Sikoa is ready to rule WWE SmackDown with an iron fist. Once The Bloodline's enforcer, Sikoa further accelerated his rise to "Tribal Chief" in spite of Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman. Sikoa formally introduced Heyman to Tama Tonga, the latest member of The Bloodline. Sikoa continued to take matters into his own hands with a level of violence more extreme than what WWE's ruling family has exhibited in the past. With Heyman clearly distressed, it seems the group is heading to a power struggle between Reigns and Sikoa. SmackDown also hosted a No. 1 contenders match for Cody Rhodes' undisputed WWE universal championship. AJ Styles avenged his WrestleMania 40 loss to LA Knight and punched his ticket to the main event of Backlash on May 4.

WWE Draft Night 1 wraps up as most superstars stay put
Night 1 of the WWE Draft concludes with few unexpected picks while Cody Rhodes and AJ Styles ramp up the intensity for their Backlash clash
Night 1 of the WWE Draft has concluded. WWE SmackDown hosted the first of two draft nights, which will conclude on Monday Night Raw. This year's event was light on surprises as the two brands often opted to draft their existing rosters and lock them in place. Nearly every champion was ineligible to be drafted except for the WWE women's tag team champs. Bianca Belair was surprisingly the No. 1 overall draft pick and big things are in store for NXT superstar Carmelo Hayes after also being drafted in Round 1. SmackDown also hosted a contract signing between undisputed WWE universal champion Cody Rhodes and No. 1 contender AJ Styles. Rhodes makes his first world title defense at Backlash France on May 4. It was a mostly cordial contract signing built on the first meeting between two workhorse Georgia boys who graduated from independent darlings to WWE champions.

WWE SmackDown results, recap, grades: Cody Rhodes vs. Logan Paul downgraded at King and Queen of the Ring
Two champions will walk into the main event of WWE King and Queen of the Ring in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, May 25. Unfortunately, only undisputed WWE champion Cody Rhodes will have his title on the line thanks to foul play by Logan Paul. SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis had planned for Rhodes and United States champion Paul to stake their respective titles in a blockbuster main event. A contract signing on Friday's episode of SmackDown brought about an unexpected change that's sure to sour some fans. Speaking of King and Queen of the Ring, four matches took place on Friday to determine SmackDown's semifinalists in both the men's and women's tournaments.

AJ Styles is not being phenomenal. Styles cut an emotional promo on WWE SmackDown about his two decades in professional wrestling and his desire to be a present father. What started as a retirement speech ended with a brutal attack on Cody Rhodes. SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis previously informed Styles that he'd have to climb the ladder after losing an undisputed WWE title match to Rhodes at Backlash. Unwilling to take the long road, Styles orchestrated an attack on the WWE champion. The Bloodline story also developed as Paul Heyman grows increasingly desperate and terrified underneath Solo Sikoa's thumb.

AJ Styles faked his retirement last week to blindside undisputed WWE champion Cody Rhodes. A vengeful Rhodes plans to make Styles utter the words he teased last week, "I Quit." Rhodes and Styles met in their first match at WWE Backlash that got rave reviews. Their sequel is shaping up to be even more intense. Styles succeeded in luring Rhodes into granting him a title rematch by brutally attacking him last week under the ruse of retiring. It's a decision he may regret after pulling out Rhodes' dark side. The Bloodline was also prominently featured on SmackDown. Solo Sikoa gave Tama Tonga a promotion, officially welcomed Tanga Loa to the group and furthered their feud with Kevin Owens and the Street Profits.
