NFL draft scenarios for top-10 picks at stake in Week 18

It's Week 18 of the NFL regular season, with plenty of playoff implications still at stake. For the rest of the league, it's about draft scenarios. The Chicago Bears are already locked into the top of the 2024 NFL draft.. That comes courtesy of the Carolina Panthers (2-14) being assured of finishing with the league's worst record. The Bears received that selection as part of a package from an offseason trade that gave the Panthers the first pick of the 2023 draft. So the race for No. 2 and beyond is on, with one more game for each team to play. By Sunday evening, it will be clear where everyone stands.

nfl draft scenarios for top-10 picks at stake in week 18
Here's the Week 18 draft scenario breakdown, with help from ESPN Analytics:

Washington (4 - 12)
If the Commanders lose to the Dallas Cowboys and the Patriots beat the Jets, they'll get the coveted second pick in a draft that most expect to start with quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Drake Maye. If they lose to the Cowboys and the Patriots lose to the Jets, it will come down to a razor-thin strength of schedule. The Commanders currently own the strength of schedule tiebreaker over the Pats by the slimmest of margins.

New England (4 - 12)
The Patriots need to lose to the Jets, while the Commanders beat the Cowboys. Or just lose to the Jets and get some help from the Falcons. This is the inverse of what the Commanders need, for the same reason -- the strength of schedule tiebreaker.

Arizona (4 -12)
The Cardinals have a better chance to move up to the third pick than remain at No. 4. That's because all they need is to lose to the Seattle Seahawks and have either the Patriots or Commanders win. Those looking for a higher draft pick will be watching the Patriots-Jets game closely -- New England is the favorite. The Cardinals don't want any of the five-win teams (Giants, Titans or Chargers) to lose. Arizona's strength of schedule is too strong to win a tiebreaker over pretty much anyone in top 10 consideration.

New York Giants (5 - 11)
The Giants need to lose to the Philadelphia Eagles and have any of the four-win teams (Commanders, Patriots or Cardinals) to emerge victorious. That should be enough for New York to jump the respective team(s) that enter the five-win group. An upset over the Eagles could drop them to No. 8. The Eagles need the win (and a Cowboys loss) to clinch the division, so both teams have something to play for. The Giants also don't want the Commanders, Patriots and Cardinals to lose. That would make it impossible to move up.

Los Angeles Chargers (5 - 11)
The Chargers need to lose to the Kansas City Chiefs, who are resting several starters after locking up the AFC West last week. That will get them into the top five. Upsetting Kansas City would likely drop them to pick No. 8. They also need the Giants and/or Cardinals to win. The Giants host the Eagles and the Cardinals host the Seahawks. Seattle and Philadelphia are playing for playoff seeding.

Tennessee (5 - 11)
The Titans need to lose to the Jacksonville Jaguars -- who are playing to win the AFC South -- and for the Giants, Chargers and/or Cardinals to win. It's possible for them to end up in the top five. A win and a Jets loss to the Patriots, however, puts the Titans at their floor with the No. 8 pick.

New York Jets (6 - 10)
The Jets need to lose to the Pats -- who will also be trying to improve their draft stock with a loss -- and have any of the five-win teams (Giants, Chargers and Titans) to post an unexpected victory. They would then jump that team. A win could potentially send Bill Belichick out with a loss, but could drop the Jets out of the top 10.

Junior Colson, Michigan's leading tackler, to enter NFL draft

Michigan star junior linebacker Junior Colson told ESPN he is leaving school early for the NFL draft. Colson is a 6-foot-3, 247-pound linebacker who'll bring elite speed and high-end productivity into this year's draft class. Rated as the No. 3 linebacker by ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. and the No. 2 linebacker by ESPN's Field Yates, Colson projects as a top-50 pick, according to NFL scouts. Colson, a third-year junior, finished with a team-leading 95 tackles this season, 30 more than the next-closest Wolverine. He won the Lott Award for contributions on and off the field and is a rare three-year contributor who started in the College Football Playoff all three seasons, including against Georgia as a true freshman.

Ohio State's Marvin Harrison Jr., likely top 5 pick, to NFL draft

Ohio State junior wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. is declaring for the 2024 NFL draft, he announced on Thursday. Harrison, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison Sr., is No. 2 overall on Mel Kiper Jr.'s Big Board. Harrison, who won the Biletnikoff Award last season, sat out the Buckeyes' 14-3 loss to Missouri in the 2023 Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic. He became the first receiver in program history to record consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons after catching 67 passes for 1,211 yards and 14 touchdowns in 12 games. His solid junior season followed up a breakout sophomore campaign where he finished with 77 receptions for 1,263 yards (sixth in FBS) and 14 touchdowns in 2022.

USC's Caleb Williams, potential No. 1 pick, enters NFL draft

USC quarterback Caleb Williams will enter the 2024 NFL draft, he announced on social media Monday. The decision comes on the final day that underclassmen are allowed to declare. Williams' decision formalizes his status as the favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the draft. His formal entry highlights the Chicago Bears' offseason conundrum of keeping Justin Fields or trading him to (presumably) build around Williams. Williams won the Heisman Trophy at USC in 2022 and put together another strong season in 2023, even as USC's record dipped from an 11-3 playoff contender to an 8-5 Pac-12 also-ran.

Williams won the Heisman Trophy at USC in 2022 and put together another strong season in 2023, even as USC's record dipped from an 11-3 playoff contender to an 8-5 Pac-12 also-ran. Williams completed 68.6% of his passes for 3,633 yards in 12 games in 2023, compared to 66.6% for 4,537 yards in 14 games the previous year. Williams and former North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye entered the season as the projected No. 1 and No. 2 picks in the draft. Both of their teams had uneven seasons, but neither quarterback did anything to change that status.

Sources: Royce O'Neale, David Roddy traded to Suns in 3-team deal

The Phoenix Suns acquired Royce O'Neale from the Brooklyn Nets and David Roddy from the Memphis Grizzlies for a trio of second-round picks, sources confirmed to ESPN. As part of the deal, Brooklyn is receiving Keita Bates-Dino and Jordan Goodwin, while Yuta Watanabe and Chimezie Meto will go to Memphis. O'Neale, 30, is a proven volume 3-point shooter and defender on the wing and is the kind of depth player who should fit nicely alongside Phoenix's star trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, and could quickly become part of the team's closing lineups -- especially if Phoenix tries to play small with Kevin Durant at center in certain matchups.

Sources: Bucks acquire Patrick Beverley in trade with 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers made a pair of trades with fellow contenders atop the Eastern Conference standings in the closing moments before the NBA's trade deadline Thursday, sending Patrick Beverley to the Milwaukee Bucks and Jaden Springer to the Boston Celtics for second-round picks, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. For Beverley, 35, it means a reunion with the coach Doc Rivers, with whom he spent several seasons as part of the LA Clippers. Milwaukee, which has been searching for perimeter defensive help in the weeks leading up to the trade deadline, gets a player who fortifies a defensive unit that has struggled all season, entering Thursday's action ranked 18th in defensive rating.

2024 NBA draft rankings: Jonathan Givony's top 25 prospects

A French prospect sits at No. 1 on our NBA draft board, but it's not Perth's Alex Sarr. Zaccharie Risacher, the 18-year-old wing on JL Bourg, has emerged as ESPN's current top 2024 NBA draft prospect. With his excellent 3-point shooting and 6-foot-10 frame that should fill out with age, Risacher will likely be selected early during the NBA's two-night draft.

Sarr, the 7-foot-1 big, slides to No. 2 as he works his way back from injury. With just five weeks to go before Selection Sunday, keep an eye on the college prospects on the list. Kentucky guards Rob Dillingham and Reed Sheppard continue to rise, Colorado's Cody Williams remains steady as a top-five prospect, while USC's Isaiah Collier is back from injury and looks ready to rebound from his recent draft slide if his return game was any indication.

Trade offers for Bears' No. 1 NFL draft pick, Justin Fields

For a second year in a row, the Chicago bears hold the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. It sets up one of the biggest decisions leaguewide this offseason: Should Chicago trade the pick and stick with quarterback Justin Fields, or trade Fields and draft USC's Caleb Williams (or another top QB prospect) to take over under center? It's a tough call, especially considering what Chicago could land in a deal. Last spring, the Bears ultimately dealt the top selection to the Carolina Panthers, acquiring a plethora of draft picks and a true No. 1 receiver in DJ Moore. One of those picks was the Panthers' 2024 first-rounder, which ended up becoming this year's first overall selection after Carolina's 2-15 season.

The top selection has been dealt 13 times since 1967, and at least five teams currently slotted in the top half of Round 1 need a new signal-caller. Will a team fall in love with Williams, North Carolina's Drake Maye or LSU's Jayden Daniels and offer Chicago a package too good to turn down? Or will it be Fields on the move as an upside play, while the Bears change course on offense? With the help of people in the NFL, draft analyst Field Yates came up with three hypothetical offers for the top pick and three hypothetical offers for Fields.
