cowboys trade down, get tyler guyton at no. 29 in nfl draft
The Cowboys had a chance to select Duke center Graham Barton but opted to trade down, giving up the 24th overall pick and a 2025 seventh-round selection in exchange for the Lions' first- and third-round picks this year (Nos. 29 and 73).

Guyton becomes the fifth offensive lineman the Cowboys have selected in the first round since 2011, joining Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick (2013), Zach Martin (2014) and Tyler Smith (2022). All four have been selected to the Pro Bowl, while Tyron Smith and Martin have built Hall of Fame careers.

Philadelphia Eagles tie NFL draft record with eight trades​


The Eagles tied an NFL record for most trades in a seven-round draft with eight, joining the 2023 Houston Texans and 2018 New England Patriots for most draft-day trades since 1990. The wheeling and dealing by general manager Howie Roseman kicked into overdrive Saturday, as Philadelphia executed five trades on Day 3. The goal was twofold, per Roseman: "To get as many of the guys that we targeted on Day 3 as we possibly can and at the same time see if we can accumulate picks for the future." To that end, the Eagles acquired 2025 third-, fourth- and fifth-round picks via three separate trades, believing they were a little light on selections for next year. The Eagles entered the day with seven draft picks and exited with six players and three future picks.

Texans trade for Rams receiver Ben Skowronek​


The Texans have traded for Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Ben Skowronek . The Texans sent a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Rams in exchange for Skowronek and a 2026 seventh-round selection. Skowronek was a seventh-round pick in the 2021 draft and is entering the last year of his contract. Through three years of his career, he has 575 receiving yards and one touchdown. Skowronek's offensive playing time dwindled from 82% in 2022 to 19% last season as he finished with 66 yards on eight catches. Where he contributed the most was on special teams, having played 71% of the Rams' kicking plays. Skowronek's most productive season was 2022 when he had 39 receptions for 376 yards.

Most improved secondaries after the 2024 NFL Draft: Eagles, Ravens lead the way​


Philadelphia

Round 1, Pick 22: CB Quinyon Mitchell
Round 2, Pick 40: CB Cooper DeJean

James Bradberry and Darius Slay fell off a bit last year. They earned 77.1 and 77.3 coverage grades, respectively, in 2022 before posting 52.0 and 65.4 marks in 2023. The Eagles subsequently went out and hit not one, but two home runs in that area in drafting Mitchell and DeJean. Mitchell will likely start right away, while DeJean could be eased into things as he recovers from a foot injury suffered in 2023 that hampered his draft process. That doesn’t mean we won’t see DeJean at all in 2024, though. He should be good to go by training camp and is one of the more versatile secondary players from the 2024 class. He could get looks in the slot or at safety.

Detroit

Round 1, Pick 24: CB Terrion Arnold
Round 2, Pick 61: CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
Round 4, Pick 132: S Sione Vakii

The Lions' defense ranked in the top 10 in run-defense grade and the top 20 in pass-rush grade but placed third worst in coverage grade in 2023. They devoted a lot of resources — salary cap, trade assets and draft picks — to improving their secondary for a Super Bowl run in 2024, and did about as good of a job as possible. Detroit traded up for cornerback Terrion Amold once he made it past the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round, and he should start right away. They then double-dipped with Rakestraw, who may not be an immediate starter but is poised to be a long-term impact player. Finally, the Lions grabbed Vaki, a hard-hitting strong safety and an enforcer over the middle.

Baltimore

Round 1, Pick 30: CB Nate Wiggins
Round 4, Pick 130: CB T.J. Tampa
Round 7, Pick 270: S Sanoussi Kane

The Ravens’ coverage unit looked great last season based on grades (93.0), ranking second in the NFL. But when narrowing that focus to just cornerbacks, they fell to 13th (71.4). Their only consistent cornerback starter who graded above 70.0 in coverage was Ronald Darby, who is now on the Jaguars. Safe to say, the team needed to upgrade in that area. Baltimore acquired one of the most talented coverage players in the class in Wiggins and then got a steal (relative to the PFF big board) in Tampa in Round 4. Wiggins could start right away for the team, while Tampa could be an ideal reserve in his rookie season and a potential long-term starter.

On the night he was drafted Newton said, "I'm fully healed now. I'm fully ready to go. The injury happened midseason, got surgery on it in January, healed up, fully healed, then I did a pro day back in Illinois and ever since then I've been ready to go."

Brenden Rice wasn't picked until the seventh round, the 32nd receiver taken out of the 35 drafted. He said his draft position disappointed him and infuriated his father. At 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds, Rice gives the Chargers a physical deep-ball target. He led USC with a 14.6 air yards per target in 2023, and seven of his 12 touchdown receptions were on vertical routes, tied for the sixth most in the FBS.

Washington selected Daniels with the second pick in last month's draft, making him the franchise's latest hope at quarterback. The team started eight different passers in the past four years, and nobody has started for more than three consecutive seasons since Mark Rypien from 1989 to 1993.
 

NFL announces Pittsburgh to host draft in 2026​


The NFL draft is heading to the Steel City. Pittsburgh will host the 2026 NFL draft, the league announced at its spring meetings Wednesday, marking the first time the city has hosted the draft since the event moved out of New York in 2015. Steelers team president and CEO Art Rooney II said the plan is to stage the draft outside Acrisure Stadium on the North Shore of the city, and he anticipates crowds will envelop the area between the Steelers' home stadium and PNC Park down the street. The Steelers had submitted bids to be the hosts in 2026 and 2027. Commissioner Roger Goodell had a phone call with Rooney, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and state legislators on Wednesday morning to inform them of Pittsburgh's winning bid. Green Bay is slated to host the 2025 NFL draft, and Detroit hosted the 2024 edition last month, setting a record with more than 775,000 fans in attendance.

Best 21st century NFL draft classes: Cowboys, Ravens, more​


This year is the 50th anniversary of the greatest draft class in NFL history, the 1974 Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers drafted four different future Hall of Famers -- wide receivers Lynn Swann and John Stallworth, linebacker Jack Lambert and center Mike Webster -- who would eventually help power them to four Super Bowl titles. No team since has come close to that draft accomplishment, but we've seen some pretty good and deep draft classes in recent years, with multiple players having strong NFL careers.
