Polish teen Iga Swiatek beats Sofia Kenin to win French Open title

With the poise of a veteran and the shots of a champion, 19-year-old Iga Swiatek picked the perfect place for her first tour-level title: the French Open. Unseeded and ranked merely 54th, Swiatek grabbed the last six games to beat Sofia Kenin 6-4, 6-1 in the final at Roland Garros on Saturday, becoming the first Polish tennis player to win a Grand Slam singles trophy. Swiatek is the first woman to triumph in Paris without ceding a set since Justine Henin in 2007. She lost only 28 games across seven matches, too. She is the first teen to win the women's title at the French Open since Iva Majoli in 1997. And Swiatek did it with victories over such opponents as 2018 champion Simona Halep and 2019 runner-up Marketa Vondrousova, both by scores of 6-1, 6-2.

Colonial Athletic Association releases limited-travel basketball schedules

The Colonial Athletic Association on Wednesday released its men's and women's basketball schedules for the 2020-21 season using a format designed to limit travel and exposure to COVID-19. The schedules will run from Jan. 1 through Feb. 28 and include 18 games. Instead of traditional home-and-home contests, it will feature teams playing the same opponent on back-to-back days at the same site, primarily on Saturdays and Sundays. Games postponed because of COVID-19 concerns can be made up on alternate dates, the league said, and a tiebreaker and broadcast schedule will be released soon. The NCAA has established Nov. 25 as the first date of basketball competition.

Over 30 college basketball teams to play in Mohegan Sun bubble

A resort casino on tribal land in Connecticut is finalizing plans to host more than 30 college basketball teams as it becomes a modified bubble for several early-season tournaments, including two being moved from New York. The Mohegan Sun has teamed up with the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, which holds its men's Tip-Off Tournament and Women's Challenge there every year, and the Gazelle Group, which runs the Empire Classic and the Legends Classic in New York. The Mohegan Sun has already developed protocols for coronavirus testing, cleaning and managing sports during the pandemic. It also has its own medical staff and facilities to treat and isolate anyone who may be infected. The organizers are not planning to allow fans at the games, but said that could change if the coronavirus metrics suggest it would be safe to allow a limited number of people into the arena, Procino said. The media will be set up in sky boxes and postgame news conferences will be done by teleconference.

Texas football players stay on field for 'The Eyes of Texas' after win over Baylor
The postgame ritual had erupted in controversy the past few weeks when most of the team left the field without staying to sing after Texas' first two home games and again in Dallas after a loss to Oklahoma. The issue had been brewing since the summer, when a group of players objected to the song because of its ties to racist elements in school history.

Clemson Tigers QB Trevor Lawrence no longer Heisman Trophy favorite

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is no longer the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy at multiple sportsbooks. Alabama quarterback Mac Jones has moved into the role of Heisman Trophy favorite at DraftKings, followed closely by Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. Jones and Fields are co-favorites at FanDuel's sportsbook. Lawrence was even money to win the Heisman Trophy at FanDuel before last week's positive test. He's now listed at 2-1. Lawrence has completed 70.7% of his passes for 1,833 yards with 17 touchdowns and two interceptions this season. Lawrence, the odds-on favorite to win the award for much of the season, tested positive for the coronavirus last week and missed Saturday's game against Boston College. He has been ruled out for this week's game at Notre Dame.
