Rafael Nadal becomes fourth man with 1,000 match wins

Becoming only the fourth man to reach 1,000 match wins should have drawn deafening cheers and a standing ovation for tennis great Rafael Nadal. Instead, he reached his milestone at the Paris Masters amid a cathedral-like silence Wednesday in a 20,000-seat stadium left completely empty because of the coronavirus pandemic. There was only a fist bump from Feliciano Lopez, after Nadal beat him 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in a subdued atmosphere more worthy of a library study area than a sports arena. The 34-year-old Nadal joins towering company in Jimmy Connors (1,274), Roger Federer (1,242) and Ivan Lendl (1,068) as the only men in the 1,000-wins club since the Open era began in 1968. It was the second milestone he reached in Paris this year, having won the French Open last month to tie Federer with 20 majors. But while 1,000 fans cheered him at Roland Garros, none were at the Bercy Arena. Nadal's first win came in May 2002 at the age of 15, when he beat Paraguayan Ramon Delgado in the first round at Mallorca.

After Notre Dame's win over Clemson, College Football Playoff race still too close to call

As if the College Football Playoff selection committee didn't have enough to debate this season. Unbalanced schedules, delayed starts, disruptions and cancellations because of the coronavirus pandemic. And then, on Saturday, the ACC and SEC further complicated the playoff picture when they both bolstered an early case for having two top-four contenders. No. 1 Clemson and No. 4 Notre Dame, with a chance to meet again in the ACC championship game, were separated by a mere touchdown in the Irish's 47-40 double-overtime win, while Florida and Alabama also appear to be on a collision course for their conference championship game. With Alabama and Ohio State both on the fast track for top-four finishes, it's possible the committee chooses them along with Clemson and Notre Dame (if Clemson beats the Irish to win the ACC title and both finish with one loss -- to each other). The committee could also consider a top four that comprises Ohio State, the ACC champion, Alabama and Florida, should the Gators upset the Tide in the SEC championship game. Now throw Clemson and Notre Dame into the debate, and the committee has a real mess to sort out. Will the committee regard the second-best teams in the ACC and SEC as better than the Pac-12 champion? An undefeated BYU? Cincinnati?

Alabama earns No. 1 spot in college football poll for 13th straight year
The Crimson Tide, who had an open date, received 59 of 62 first-place votes. Notre Dame, which has its best ranking since it was No. 1 at the end of the 2012 regular season, received two first-place votes. Ohio State got one. The Crimson Tide's streak of seasons with at least one appearance at No. 1 started in Nick Saban's second year as coach in Tuscaloosa.

Notre Dame mandates COVID testing after football celebration

Notre Dame has implemented mandatory coronavirus testing for students and strict penalties for those who don't comply after students rushed the school's football field to celebrate a double-overtime upset over Clemson and held numerous weekend parties. A crowded mass of students, players and coaches was on the field in the minutes following the Fighting Irish's 47-40 win Saturday night in South Bend, Indiana, over then-No. 1 Clemson. Many of the thousands who stormed the field were not wearing masks or had their masks pulled down. Now all Notre Dame students are required to undergo coronavirus testing before they leave South Bend for the extended winter break, the school president, Rev. John Jenkins, told students Sunday night. The email announcement didn't specifically reference the storming of the field but rather "many gatherings" over the weekend. The campus has also put in place a zero-tolerance policy for gatherings that do not follow safety guidelines. Any student hosting a large gathering will face "severe sanctions.''

Terence Crawford retains WBO welterweight title with powerful TKO of Kell Brook
Crawford (37-0, 28 KOs) scored a highlight-reel knockout over Brook (39-3, 27 KOs) at the 1:14 mark of the fourth round inside the MGM Grand. Crawford was noticeably patient the first three rounds of the fight, switching stances and feeling Brook out.

Joshua Franco-Andrew Moloney ends in controversial no contest
Moloney (21-1, 14 KOs), who surrendered the title to Franco (17-1-2, 8 KOs) in a 12-round bout in June, leaped onto the ropes in celebration inside the MGM Grand when ringside physicians stopped the bout after the second round because of swelling around Franco's right eye. Referee Russell Mora declared the result a no contest, however, stating that the injury was caused by an accidental head-butt.

Pac-12 to allow nonconference football games

The Pac-12 has loosened its scheduling restrictions for the 2020 season and will allow nonconference football games to be played if they meet a certain criteria. "The Pac-12 is committed to maintaining maximum flexibility to provide our football student-athletes with an opportunity to compete, while continuing to ensure that health and safety remains our number one priority," commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement. The Pac-12 listed three stipulations that must be met for one of its teams to play a nonconference game. Opponents must be able to meet the Pac-12 testing and related safety protocols for COVID-19, which includes once weekly PCR and daily antigen testing for each day of close contact athletic activity. Pac-12 teams must be the host site and games must be broadcast by ESPN or Fox Sports, the conference's television partners.

Clemson Tigers-Florida State Seminoles game postponed

Florida State and Clemson will not play Saturday after the teams' medical personnel could not mutually agree on moving forward with the game, the ACC said in a statement. The teams were supposed to play at noon in Tallahassee, Florida. Multiple sources told ESPN that a Clemson player tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday after practicing with the Tigers during the week. That led Florida State to say it was not comfortable playing Saturday's game, the source said. ACC protocols state teams must be tested the day before competition, so both Florida State and Clemson got tested Friday per conference rules. Those tests are done by an independent third party, and results are received either the same day or early the following day. Once those tests are received, both schools get on a call with the ACC to sign off on whether they feel comfortable proceeding with the game. This is standard before any ACC game can be played.

Australian Open 'likely' to be delayed

Victorian Sports and Tourism Minister Martin Pakula concedes the 2021 Australian Open will "most likely" be delayed but only by a week or two. Pakula on Wednesday also said the delicate negotiations between the governments and various stakeholders were close to a conclusion, after Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews earlier told the Sunrise program that the Open "will go ahead".The sports minister wouldn't be drawn on discussing the players' and their entourages' quarantine arrangements amid speculation the process may be shortened to only 10 days, other than to reaffirm that they would definitely be required to quarantine.
