As Mayfield struggles, Panthers defense shines in first win
The only thing missing during an 0-2 start, when the defense played well enough to win, were turnovers. It had none, making Carolina the only team in the NFL without any. That doesn’t mean Mayfield won’t have good days, but so far he hasn’t.
Murray has 2 TD passes, 1 rushing; Cards top Panthers 26-16
Murray threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns and added another score on the ground as the Cardinals overcame another lackluster first half, rallying with 16 fourth-quarter points to beat the Carolina Panthers 26-16. Arizona (2-2) has been outscored 66-16 in the first half this season. Arizona's defense frustrated Baker Mayfield, forcing three turnovers by the 2018 No. 1 overall pick. The 6-foot-1 Mayfield had five passes batted at the line of scrimmage and was off the mark on several other throws. He's had an NFL-high 11 passes batted down. The Panthers had won 14 of 19 overall against the Cardinals coming into the game, including the past six by an average margin of 35-17. But the Panthers were 2 of 10 on third downs and couldn't get anything going on offense.

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold's return from IR not close, coach Matt Rhule says
The Carolina Panthers have little option but to stick with Baker Mayfield at quarterback for the NFL's lowest-ranked offense with 2021 starter Sam Darnold at least another week from being ready to return from injured reserve. "Not close right now,'' coach Matt Rhule said Monday of Darnold, who suffered a high ankle sprain in late August. "Not this week. Maybe he starts the window maybe the next week. This was a doctor thing. He's not going to be practicing this week.'' Mayfield, the top overall pick in the 2018 draft, has thrown for 747 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions after winning a training camp competition with Darnold, the No. 3 overall pick in 2018, for the starting job.
Baker Mayfield continues to struggle, but Panthers don't have another option now
The boos came in the fourth quarter on Sunday when Carolina
Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield had his fifth pass batted down at the line of scrimmage, bringing his NFL lead in that category to 11. Mayfield heard them. Carolina coach Matt Rhule heard the boos, too, but he didn’t replace the first pick of the 2018 draft in the midst of his fourth straight subpar performance during his 1-3 start with the franchise. Even when healthy, Darnold, the No. 3 overall pick in 2018, may not be the answer. Last season, when he went 4-7 as the starter, he had some of the same issues with failing to deliver under pressure that Mayfield has had this season. But he was 3-0 as the starter earlier in the 2021 season when running back Christian McCaffrey was healthy. He had a 63.3 total QBR when McCaffrey was on the field. Mayfield's QBR is 14.7 with the do-it-all back.
Panthers QB Baker Mayfield takes blame for offense's struggle amid 1-3 start
Mayfield's 15.3 Total QBR is the second worst by a quarterback in his first four games of a season since ESPN began tracking the statistic in 2006. Mayfield is headed toward career worsts in almost every statistical category, including a 54.7 completion percentage that ranks among the worst among qualified starters.
Did Panthers make right call acquiring Mayfield instead of Garoppolo
Statistically, neither quarterback had eye-popping career numbers to suggest he could win games on his own. Garoppolo is 34-15 as a starter for the 49ers and New England Patriots. Mayfield is 30-33, including this season's start with Carolina.
Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns, Emmanuel Moseley returned an interception 41 yards for a score. Jeff Wilson ran for 120 yards and a touchdown and Tevin Coleman scored twice for the 49ers (3-2) after being elevated to the active roster this week. San Francisco's defense came in having allowed an NFL-best 37 points through four games, and has now held all five opponents to fewer than 20. Christian McCaffrey had 104 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown for the Panthers, who fell to 1-4 on the season and 11-27 under embattled coach Matt Rhule.

Defensive pass game coordinator Steve Wilks was named the interim coach. Wilks, 53, was previously a head coach in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals in 2018 where he posted a 3-13 record and was fired following his first season.
Baker Mayfield in boot, Panthers unsure of status for Week 6
Should Mayfield not be available for the Rams the Panthers likely would turn to Walker, who was 5-for-6 for 60 yards in what Rhule called "mop-up duty.'' Walker is 2-0 as a starter for Carolina.

Steve Wilks: Baker Mayfield 'definitely could' be backup QB Sunday
Walker is set to make his third NFL start. He is 2-0 in the past two years, with wins against Detroit in 2020 and the Arizona Cardinals in 2021. He completed 24 of 34 pass attempts for 258 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions in a 20-0 victory against the Lions.
Steve Wilks aims to overcome odds again as Panthers interim head coach
Elevation from interim to full-time head coach status in the NFL has historically been difficult. Of 40 interim hires since 2000 (data provided by the Washington Post), only 10 have gone on to become the permanent head coach. None have done so since the Jacksonville Jaguars ' Doug Marrone in 2016.
