Carolina Panthers

Sources: Panthers listening to Christian McCaffrey trade offers

The Carolina Panthers are listening to other teams about a potential trade for star running back Christian McCaffrey, although a deal might not be easy to complete, league sources tell ESPN. The Panthers rebuffed at least two teams' inquiries into trading for McCaffrey last week and will continue to reject overtures they don't consider significant offers, according to sources. What makes McCaffrey, 26, so attractive to other teams -- aside from his talent -- is his contract situation. During the spring, the former Pro Bowler lowered his base salary for the 2022 season to just $1.035 million -- meaning any team that acquires him in a trade would have no issues squeezing his contract under its salary cap.

Carolina (10) at Los Angeles Rams (24)

Mathew Stafford passed for 253 yards, Darrell Henderson and receiver Ben Skowronek rushed for touchdowns in the second half, and the Rams snapped their two-game skid with a 24-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Los Angeles trailed 10-7 at halftime, but took control in the second half behind its patchwork offensive line. After Skowronek put the Rams ahead and scored his first NFL touchdown in the third quarter with an 18-yard sprint on his first career rushing attempt, Henderson added a 2-yard TD run with 8:15 to play.

Christian McCaffrey amassed 158 of Carolina's 203 total yards, racking up the highest percentage of any NFL team's offense from one player since 2003. But P.J. Walker passed for just 60 yards while making his third career start in the injury absences of Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold and Matt Carral.

Should Carolina Panthers trade or keep Christian McCaffrey?

The losses are taking their toll on Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffery. You could see it on his face after Sunday’s 24-10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Carolina’s fifth defeat in six games this season and 12th in their past 13 going back to last season. The Panthers haven’t had a winning season since McCaffrey’s rookie campaign in 2017, when they were 11-5. They have gone 23-53 since. Trading McCaffrey arguably makes sense in some ways with the Panthers at 1-5 and likely looking ahead to next season. More draft picks would allow general manager Scott Fitterer to continue building the roster so it’s ready to win when the team finds a franchise quarterback or possibly move up in the first round to draft a potential franchise QB.

Panthers QB Sam Darnold returns to practice after ankle injury

Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold returned to practice Wednesday for the first time in almost eight weeks sporting a full red beard and a left ankle healed enough to give him another shot at starting in the next couple of weeks. But whether he gets a second chance to start after losing the job to Baker Mayfield in training camp or remains the backup, Darnold's priority is to help a team that is 1-5 this season and the loser of 12 of the last 13 games find a way to win.

Sources: Panthers trading star Christian McCaffrey to 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers are sending second-, third- and fourth-round picks in 2023 and a fifth-round pick in 2024 to the Carolina Panthers for star running back Christian McCaffrey, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday night. The deal gives San Francisco the offensive playmaker needed to compete for a Super Bowl. It also gives McCaffrey a chance to be on a winning team for the first time since his rookie season in 2017 when Carolina went 11-5 and return to the Bay Area where he starred in college at Stanford. When healthy, McCaffrey is one of the best dual threats in the NFL. In 2019, he became only the third player in NFL history to have 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in the same season. His 670 yards from scrimmage -- a team-leading 393 yards rushing and team-leading 33 catches for 277 yards -- this season rank fourth in the NFL.

@CeeJay

Hot sun out, smoking some dooby on the porch with a cheap gin in a glass that needed a good wash 3 days ago. But you don't care - all you need is that harsh swill burning your gullet and to send you into a stupor. But what to do CeeJay? You're all out of ice and the hooch is running low. Ya gotta go down to the shop, but your t-shirt is stained and you're still a bit jittery from last night's bender.

You scratch your arse and smell your finger. You like smelling your butthole, but boy it's a real humdinger this time. You shot out two earlier in the day after a miller's instant coffee, but it's all such a haze - did you remember to wipe the second time? Oh yeah, now it comes back to you. You fell asleep on the fucking toilet. Shit, and you thought you'd already wiped. Aw man, fuck. FUCK. How did it come to this, you sack of shit. You just chop the gin and load up - fuck the ice. But the bottle is down to a 1/4. You thought the bottle would last the weekend, but you hit it extra hard last night. But who are you kidding, you always hit it extra hard. Those pricks at TrollKingdom - they fucking get you so worked up. It doesn't matter how much copypasta you do, it never fills the void. You know the truth when you stare at your shitty little room you and your antiquated PC sit in. Deep, deep down, you know if they could see you for the wretch you are, you'd lose - instantly. You know you're a loser. And, you know they know too. But you push it away. You can't change any of it - you're too weak.

What about the gin? Suns going down and you want to be fully buzzed before hitting up Venooker. You want to be passed out by midnight, so on ya bike. Aw but you hate the walk of shame. What about the butthole? Don't worry, you'll be in and out. Just keep your head down, don't make eye contact and hand over the credit card. Think of the relief when you walk back through front door - the clang of the bottles in your carry bag ringing in another night of reality-smashing oblivion.

Panters Baker Mayfield 'rolling with the punches' as QB2
This will be Walker's third straight start for Carolina (2-5) since Mayfield was injured in a Week 5 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. One day later, coach Matt Rhule was fired.

Loveable PJ Walker gives Panthers something to feel good about for a change
Rhule always believed in Walker, 27. One of Rhule's biggest mistakes in two-plus seasons at Carolina was not sticking with the quarterback last season after he improved the team to 5-5. Instead, he made the popular choice and turned to Cam Newton. Newton went on to go 0-5 before being replaced by Sam Darnold.

Carolina (34) @ Atlanta (37) OT

Atlanta's Youghoe Koo booted a 41-yard field goal in overtime after the Carolina Panthers missed a pair of kicks that could've won it, giving the Falcons an improbable 37-34 victory Sunday that maintained their hold on first place in the NFC South. The teams combined for three touchdowns in the final 3:06 of regulation before a silly penalty by the Panthers' D.J. Moore opened the door for the Falcons (4-4) to pull it out. The Panthers had a chance to create a four-team logjam in the NFC South. Instead, the Falcons have the lead all to themselves with a .500 record.
