I do hope you're not accusing me as such, seeing as since when this started, I haven't done a thing to compromise the karma system, and have given you some honest advice as to why I think it gets hammered so much.

And how can people be part of the solution when you feel you're simply being attacked by them, when advice is given. Or even worse, reply only with an aloof comment, as if you don't even give a stuff what has been posted.

Try some humility. You'll be surprised what you'll get back. Some of us behind the monitors are actually human.

That idea wont work anyway, but something else might. I was hoping the forum permissions would allow for karma to be turned off in select forums, but it wont. There is no way to disable "points" and only leave the comments. We could set up yet ANOTHER usergroup, but I'm not sure that would help. Every board I know that has karma has complaints about it, I'm still not totally convinced there isn't a way to work this out, but its going to mean experimenting and switching it on and off and all that.

Have you tried asking over at vBulletin if there's a non-points way of allocating comments?

Chris, to be fair, I was being pissy because I didn't like my karma being gone.

Look, this is a message board. People exist as a name, an avatar and the content of their posts. Just as in real life, it means something to people when they build up a reputation and stature over time as a reward for their time and contribution. Seeing a par of it disappear one day out of the blue is a little bit of a kick in the teeth. It's not ultimately a big deal, but reactions to it should be expected.

What was wrong with just having the "no karma" group for abusers? If you don't throw in the other slaps like no arcade for negged members, it's a pretty fair and sane way to deal with troublemakers (also it will draw less attention to karma as yet another way to be a cannibal troll here). And I didn't see that you were already resolved to take away superkarma abilities, so my bad for harping on that.

The problem is staffing. You have 31 admins (it was 32 before I stepped down), but none of them are rolling up their sleeves to really keep an eye on things. And the involvement of your tech admins seems to be reduced to a card at Christmas. I don't know how to solve that dilemma, my stepping down was actually meant to be part of the solution, so that you could fill the spot with someone who had the time and was willing to sift through all the crap.
