Karma Kabal

Great idea.

It's an excellent idea... I had toyed with giving everyone max karma so they could still play in the arcade. But if we gave everyone 50 karma, new registers 50 karma, then made it 10 million posts before they could give karma. I think 10 million is the max... and I dont even see you trying for that, ok, maybe I better make it 100 million.................

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

After thinking about it, that wouldnt work. The neutral karma is given by people in the red. And they can't be in the red and play in the arcade. Maybe starting everyone with max karma is the way to go.

I think what she is alluding to is the period of time it activates. As you have a green pip when you register an account, you can access the arcade.

However, neutral karma is given out until you make 50 posts. Raise that level to something like 10 million posts, and you can only dish out neutral karma for all time, but still access the arcade.

No, the way it works is you cant give any karma at all untill you reach 50 posts, which is why raising the post count wont help. The neutral karma is given out by people in the red. So that wont work. Right now the only solution I can see (using the current set up) is to raise everyones karma to the max and toss anyone using the race hazard into the no karma group. That would also mean giving people the max karma when registering.

New accounts could formally only hand out neutral karma, surely? That's why when Karma duals are registered, they run into the badlands and hammer out a 50+ post spam thread.

TELL YOU WHAT. Turn Karma back on for a while, PM me the details of an unused account with nil posts (one of the spambots, maybe - one has just opened a thread in The Mine Field pimping a trainers website), and I'll let you know what it does.

I've been visiting so many new boards, I know ONE of them has a minimum post before you can even see someone elses karma to give it out. I thought it was TK...

ok, so whats the maximum posts....

ok, post count is 100 million before karma hits count, and admins follow the same rules as everyone else. Can you still play in the arcade?

Not really, but when there's plenty of them around, and still more get created, then it creates an issue. It swamps the board with meaningless tripe. I should know - I'm the main instigator of meaningless tripe around here.
ChrisG76 said:
LOL... are you afraid you lose your crown to some karma whore? You know that ain't gonna happen anytime soon ;)
Now seriously: I can see your POV, but maybe since I haven't been at TK that long, I am just used to that stuff, so it doesn't stand out for me. At the end, isn't it a question of perspective what we deem meaningless tripe? Isn't allowing any kind of meaningless tripe one part of TK's *cough* charm? But anyway, this particular discussion doesn't solve anything, so I'll just say Hey, that's, like, your opinion, man! ;)

Maybe so, but I see a lack of Karma as a way of getting people to communicate properly. I guess in the long run it doesn't make all that much difference, but I'd rather see a thread of conversation than a post with 10 several-word long comments under it. At least ask people to use a bit of brainpower when they choose to respond to something.
I can see what you mean, and if you think that doing away with karma will do the trick, hey, I won't whine (much) when y'all decide to give it a try. Unfortunately, I really doubt that you can bring people to suddenly use brainpower when they haven't voluntarily done so before...

They do make people lazy. You have limited space to type a comment. It gets in the way of serious threads, where you can hammer in a snippy comment rather than post in a manner that would ask one to utilize a little thought first.

Of course, you could just quote the post and type the exact same thing. As I've said in this thread before, I'm not necessarily against a comment system - just the idea that points are attached to it.
Oh, OK, that's different then. No point defending something you don't attack :D (Although I had prepared a nice, long speech about the virtue and fun of snippy comments....)

The little bar, the points: these turn it into a competition for many, as opposed to a system of adding comment. That's what has affected the board as a majority, as opposed to simply having a comments system. That's what has made people lazy.

The fact there there's effectively a ranking system, creates status. Thereby if effects the behaviour of the board as a whole. For instance, the DLA shite wouldn't have happened if there were no points, or no positive or negative ranking added to Karma comments. The board would have had one less forum full of shit (The Badlands effectively rose out of the 'home' given to DLA duals), less duals, less hassle.

Take it from me. Remove the points. Remove the coloured bar. Remove the problem. What can you do with a comment under a post other than read it and take it at face value?
I wholeheartedly agree. I don't care for the points, getting them was fun for me, it even gave me a chance to start a thread when I was new, and get acquainted with people. But ranking or status symbols of any sort I do not like, so yep, I am all for removing the point system, if it's possible without losing the comment option (~sigh).

LOL, I was so busy to answer Chris that I didn't see that the thread has evolved bigtime, so just disregard above blabbing ;)

I just checked out the arcade, works for me...

I don't want to start over. I want what was taken from me plus some extra for the annoyance.

Where the hell is that little, fruity Welsh boy?
