Ryan Crouser completes three-peat in shot put at Olympics

American Ryan Crouser became the first man to three-peat in the Olympic shot put on Saturday, adding another gold medal to his packed trophy cabinet with a mighty throw of 22.90 meters "Throwing a 16-pound ball is not easy on the body," Crouser said. "Throwing it as hard as you can, as far as you can beats you up. Crouser's compatriot Joe Kovacs won silver and Jamaica's Rajindra Campbell took bronze. The world record-holder battled with a nerve issue in his elbow this year but had no issues at the Stade de France as he produced his best throw of the season on his third attempt and clapped with satisfaction.

U.S. men's basketball earns top seed for Olympics' medal round

For three years, Team USA has been planning, recruiting and refining to reach this upcoming week in Paris. And they've aligned things in excellent position to claim their fifth consecutive gold medal. The team took its final steps before heading to the French capital on Saturday, finishing off Olympic pool play 3-0 with a 104-83 victory over Puerto Rico to clinch the top overall seed in the medal round. That will begin Tuesday, when the U.S. will face Brazil in the quarterfinals at Bercy Arena at 3:30 ET. Also in Team USA's medal round bracket are Serbia and Australia; the winner of that game will face either the U.S. or Brazil. In the opposite bracket Canada faces France and Germany will play Greece. Katie Ledecky wins fourth straight 800m freestyle at Olympics

Every year on August 3, Katie Ledecky is reminded of her first Olympic gold medal. She was just 15 years old, a reserved high schooler who had surprisingly made the U.S. swim team for the London Games. Then she went out and shocked the world, beating everyone in the 800-meter freestyle. Twelve years to the day, Ledecky did it again. Not a stunner, but one for the ages. Gold medal No. 9. Ledecky capped another stellar Olympics by becoming only the second swimmer to win an event at four straight Summer Games, holding off Ariarne Titmus, the "Terminator," to win the 800 free Saturday night. It was Ledecky's second gold medal in Paris and the ninth of her remarkable career, which marked another milestone. She became only the sixth Olympian to reach that figure, joining swimmer Mark Spitz, track star Carl Lewis, Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina and Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi in a tie for second place. The only athlete to win more golds: swimmer Michael Phelps with 23.

Netherlands' Femke Bol chases down U.S. in mixed relay to win gold

Forget about mixed relay. This was a one-woman show. When Dutch sprinter Femke Bol entered the final turn of the 4x400-meter mixed relay in fourth position under a downpour, a medal -- let alone a victory -- seemed like a difficult proposition for her orange-clad team. That's when Bol accelerated into another gear and proceeded to reel in the three women ahead of her. Bol, whose best race is the 400 hurdles, ran the anchor lap in 47.93 seconds, and the Netherlands team of Omalla, Lieke Klaver, Isaya Klein Ikkink and Bol won the race at the Paris Olympics on Saturday in 3 minutes, 7.43 seconds -- 0.31 clear of the United States.

When it was over, Bol covered her mouth in disbelief, and her teammates shook their heads in amazement. Bol pulled a similar surprise last year at world championships in the women's 4x400, rallying from well behind late to earn a gold medal. That came after she tripped and fell in the home stretch of the mixed relay, where she was making up ground on the U.S. Bol will be back on the track Sunday for the opening round of the women's 400 hurdles, an event where she's expected to challenge world-record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. Bol won bronze in the 400 hurdles in Tokyo, but this was the first Olympic gold of her career.

Novak Djokovic beats Carlos Alcaraz for first Olympic gold

For all of his Grand Slam championships and other titles, for all of his time at No. 1, Novak Djokovic really, really wanted an Olympic gold medal for Serbia, the last significant accomplishment missing from his glittering résumé. He finally got one at age 37, and it doesn't matter a bit how long it took. Djokovic beat Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) in an enthralling and evenly matched men's tennis singles final at the 2024 Games on Sunday. His impressive career already featured a men's-record 24 Grand Slam trophies and the most weeks spent atop in the rankings by any man or woman. It also already contained a Summer Olympics medal, from 2008, but it was a bronze -- and he made it clear that simply wasn't sufficient.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh win Ukraine's first individual gold

Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who was forced to flee her country due to the war with Russia, won gold at the Paris Olympics on Sunday. It was Ukraine's first individual gold of these Summer Games, following a victory in women's team saber fencing. Mahuchikh cleared 2.00 meters to finish ahead of Nicola Olyslagers of Australia, who also cleared 2.00 but then failed at all three of her attempts at 2.02. Eleaanor Patterson of Australia and Iryna Gerashchenko, also of Ukraine, shared the bronze at 1.95. Mahuchikh claimed the first Olympic gold of her career, adding to the bronze she won in Tokyo. She also won gold at last year's world championships.

U.S swimmer Bobby Finke, 4x100 women's relay set world records

The United States set two world records on the final night of swimming at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, winning the gold medal count over rival Australia and easing the sting of the first loss ever in the men's 4x100-meter medley relay. Bobby Finke set a new standard in the 1,500 freestyle and the American women closed a thrilling nine days at La Defense Arena with another record in their 4x100 medley relay. Finke was under world-record pace the entire race and really turned it on coming to the finish. He touched in 14 minutes, 30.67 seconds to break the record of 14.31.02 set by China's Sun Yang at the 2012 London Games.

Finke, who won the gold medal in the event in Tokyo, became the first male swimmer to go back-to-back in the grueling 30-lap event since Australia's Grant Hackett in 2000 and 2004 and the first American since Mike Burton in 1968 and 1972. The silver went to Italy's Gregorio Paltrinieri in 14.34.55, while race favorite Daniel Wiffen of Ireland couldn't follow up his triumph in the 800 freestyle. He was never a factor and settled for the bronze in 14:39.63, barely holding off Hungary's David Betlehem for the final spot on the podium.

China hands U.S. first loss in men's 4x100m medley relay

China stunned the U.S. by winning gold in the men's 4x100 medley relay on Sunday, a race the Americans had won at every Olympics other than the boycotted Moscow Games in 1980. The medley relay was added to the program in 1960. The Americans had to settle for silver in 3:28.01, with France taking bronze in 3:28.38 to give Léon Marchand his fifth medal of the games to go along with four individual golds.

The winning team included Qin Haiyang and Sun Jiajun, who were both among the nearly two dozen swimmers who tested positive for a banned substance at the Tokyo Games but were allowed to compete after a Chinese investigation ruled that they consumed food that had been contaminated. The result is sure to stir more hard feelings from other nations that feel the Chinese got away with cheating.

Noah Lyles wins gold for U.S. in 100m by .005 seconds

Since last August, Noah Lyles has stood firm and unequivocal in his belief that the title of "world's fastest man" belongs to him. Sunday night at the Stade de France, he proved it. With a personal-best 9.784-second time that edged him past a world-class field full of elite sprinters, Lyles walked away with his first Olympic gold medal in the 100-meter final. He earned the victory by beating the man with the world's fastest time this year, Jamaica's Kishane Thompson, by .005 seconds. Lyles' only other Olympic medal is a bronze, which he earned in the 200 at the Tokyo Games three years ago.

Boxer Imane Khelif clinches Olympic medal amid gender outcry

Boxer Imane Khelif of Algeria clinched a medal Saturday at the Paris Olympics following days of sharp scrutiny and online abuse as controversy about her gender have exploded into a larger clash about identity in sports. Khelif defeated Anna Luca Hamori of Hungary 5:0 in the quarterfinals of the women's 66-kilogram bout. Khelif will win at least a bronze medal after defeating Hamori for the second victory of her tumultuous second trip to the Olympics. Khelif has faced international scrutiny after the International Boxing Association claimed Khelif failed an unspecified eligibility test for women's competition last year. She then won her opening bout Thursday when opponent Angela Carini of Italy tearfully abandoned the fight after just 46 seconds.

At a Paris Games that has championed inclusion and seen an outcry over an opening ceremony performance featuring drag queens, LGBTQIA+ groups say the comments could pose dangers to their community and female athletes. Both had competed in IBA events for several years without problems, and the Russian-dominated body -- which has faced years of clashes with the IOC over judging scandals, leadership decisions and financial issues -- has refused to provide any information about the tests, underscoring its lack of transparency in nearly every aspect of its dealings, particularly in recent years. Khelif will clinch at least a bronze medal in her second Olympics after failing to medal at the Tokyo Games held in 2021.

Boxer Lin Yu-ting clinches medal amid Olympics gender dispute

Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting has guaranteed herself a medal after securing victory over Bulgaria's Svetlana Kamenova Staneva in the women's 57kg quarterfinals Sunday. Lin has been the subject of an ongoing controversy in this year's Olympic boxing event, after the International Boxing Federation (IBA) claimed at last year's world championships that she and Algerian fighter Imane Khelif failed an unspecified eligibility test, although it has not given further details. The pair are allowed to fight under guidelines over gender eligibility by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which said Sunday the tests conducted by the IBA were not legitimate and lacked credibility after Khelif and Lin were "carted off and tested" because there were "suspicions" against them.

Lin, who is the No. 1 seed in her weight class, achieved similar success Sunday, winning a scrappy fight against Staneva. She is now guaranteed at least a bronze medal, with the chance to fight for gold next Saturday should she win her semifinal bout against Turkey's Ezra Yildiz Kahraman on Wednesday. In Sunday's bout, Lin opted to sit back and try to strike from range. She was also warned for elbowing by the referee early on and twice fell to the canvas after appearing to be tripped by Staneva. The Olympic sport reached gender parity for the first time in Paris, inviting 124 men and 124 women just 12 years after women's boxing made its Olympic debut.

Olympic boxer Imane Khelif calls for end to bullying athletes
The victories of Khelif and fellow boxer Lin Yu-ting of Chinese Taipei in the ring in Paris have become one of the biggest stories of the Paris Games. Both women have clinched their first Olympic medals even as they have faced online abuse based on unsubstantiated claims about their gender, drawing them into a wider divide over changing attitudes toward gender identity and regulations in sports.

IOC says boxers in gender dispute to remain in Paris Olympics

The two women boxers at the heart of a gender dispute at the Paris Olympics will stay in the competition for as long as they keep winning because they meet all eligibility criteria, the International Olympic Committee said Monday. The IOC is in charge of holding the boxing tournament in Paris after stripping recognition of the International Boxing Association last year following failure to implement governance and finance reforms. Algerian boxer Imane Khelif and Taiwan's double world champion Lin Yu-ting, who have reached the semifinals of their respective weight divisions, were cleared to compete at the Games despite having been disqualified during the 2023 World Championships. The IBA on Monday said the boxers failed an eligibility test after having undergone a chromosome test during the 2023 worlds, and that the IBA had informed the IOC at the time. The boxing body insists the fighters should not be competing in Paris. The IOC has rejected the results of the IBA-ordered tests as arbitrary and illegitimate, saying there was no reason to conduct them.

Italy beats U.S., wins first Olympic mixed team skeet gold

After four Olympic gold medals, Vincent Hancock has had to settle for a silver. Italy edged the United States 45-44 on Monday in the final of the first Olympic mixed team skeet competition, the first time U.S. shooter Hancock has won a medal of any color other than gold in an Olympic career going back to 2008. Italy's Gabriele Rossetti and Diana Bacosi, both individual skeet gold medalists in 2016, needed to hit at least seven of their last eight targets to win the gold medal and avoid a shoot-off. The Italians led team qualification Monday with 149 hits from 150 shots, equaling the world record, and the U.S. had 148 for second place. Rosetti and Hancock posted the only two perfect scores of 75.

Simone Biles finishes Olympics with silver in floor exercise

American gymnast Simone Biles didn't get the golden send-off she sought. Biles earned silver in the floor exercise finals on Monday -- her fourth medal in Paris and 11th Olympic medal overall -- after a routine that included a couple of costly steps out of bounds. Brazil's Rebeca Andrade became the first gymnast to beat Biles in a floor final in a major international competition, posting a score of 14.166 that finished just ahead of Biles at 14.133. Jordan Chiles, a longtime friend and teammate of Biles, earned the bronze. Biles, considered the greatest in the history of the sport, wasn't at her usual best during a routine set to music from pop icons Taylor Swift and Beyonce. She's going home with gold medals from the team, all-around and vault finals and a silver that came as a surprise in her signature event. Biles' overall medal total (including seven gold, two silver, two bronze) ties Czechoslovakia's Vera Caslavska for the second most by a female gymnast in Olympic history. She missed a chance to add a fifth Paris medal earlier Monday when she fell during the beam final, finishing fifth. "Never say never," Biles said after claiming her second Olympic vault title earlier in the Games. "Next Olympics are at home. So you just never know. I am getting really old." She will be 31 then, an age when most gymnasts have long since retired. Yet Biles is redefining that adage in real time, and considering the gap that still exists between herself and nearly everyone else in the sport -- save for Andrade, who pushed Biles as hard as she's been pushed in nearly a decade -- anything is possible.

Team USA basketball honors identity in Olympic medal round

Distractions are everywhere in Paris, and the pressure of the Olympics is on the increase as Team USA enters this final stress-inducing run. The Americans begin their defining week with a basic mantra: Keep it simple and stay with your identity. After playing three games in a 14-day span, Team USA needs to win three in a five-day span, beginning Tuesday in the quarterfinals against Brazil (3:30 p.m. ET), to bring home its fifth consecutive gold. Over the past month, the Americans have honed a style that has led them to a perfect 8-0 record, including exhibitions. As they made final preparations Monday, there was a collective mindset to stay with the plan.

Ten different players average at least seven points a game. All 10 average at least six shots per game, and no one averages more than 10. It has led to excellent efficiency -- they are shooting 54% as a team. Kerr has 11 players on the roster averaging between 18-22 minutes, and he has prioritized having size, leaning into playing three centers in his rotation most of the time. The U.S. has been marginally outrebounded by its opponents so far, 124-123, but it has been allowing 14 offensive rebounds per game. Brazil averages 13 offensive rebounds per game, and Kerr said he's expecting the team to try to "maul" the Americans on the boards.

Americans Cole Hocker, Gabby Thomas win Olympic track gold

One race ended with a shocker; the other was pure dominance. American Cole Hocker pulled the upset of the Olympic track meet Tuesday night, outracing favorites Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Josh Kerr to the finish line for the gold medal in the 1,500 meters. A short while later, American Gabby Thomas dominated the women's 200 meters, finishing in 21.83 seconds to add a gold to the bronze she took home in the event from Tokyo three years ago. Hocker won the 1,500 meters in an Olympic-record 3 minutes, 27.65 seconds, pulling from fifth to first over the final 300 meters to beat his personal best by more than 3 seconds. He beat Kerr by .14 seconds, while Ingebrigtsen, who set the pace through the first 1,200 meters, ended up in fourth in a time faster than his Olympic record set in Tokyo. American Yared Nuguse also set a personal best to win the bronze.
