Star Trek 12 news/countdown thread

JJ finally admits that he has a problem.

"I'll tell you, there are times when I'm working on a shot, I think, 'Oh this would be really cool… with a lens flare.' But I know it's too much, and I apologize. I'm so aware of it now. I was showing my wife an early cut of Star Trek Into Darkness and there was this one scene where she was literally like, 'I just can't see what's going on. I don't understand what that is.' I was like, 'Yeah, I went too nuts on this.'""This is how stupid it was," J.J. Abrams added. "I actually had to use ILM [Industrial Light & Magic] to remove lens flare in a couple of shots, which is, I know, moronic. But I think admitting you're an addict is the first step towards recovery."

Uh-oh.

Michael Arndt Isn't Writing 'Star Wars: Episode VII' Anymore

The Huffington Post | By Christopher Rosen Posted: 10/24/2013 3:47 pm EDT | Updated: 10/24/2013 6:02 pm EDT

Close to one year after being hired to write "Star Wars: Episode VII," Oscar-winning screenwriter Michael Arndt has departed the project. The news was announced by Lucasfilm on Thursday in a post on the Star Wars website heralding the "master filmmaking team" in place for "Star Wars: Episode VII."

As 'Episode VII' continues pre-production, Lawrence Kasdan and director J.J. Abrams have assumed screenwriting duties for the film. Kasdan, who has been serving as a consultant on the film, is a veteran of several classic Lucasfilm productions, writing the screenplay for 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' and serving as co-screenwriter for 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 'Return of the Jedi.' Acclaimed director and screenwriter Abrams' credits include 'Super 8,' 'Mission: Impossible III,' 'Fringe,' and 'Lost.'

Arndt was brought on for "Episode VII" on Nov. 9 of last year. He's an Oscar winner for his "Little Miss Sunshine" script, and was nominated for his screenplay to "Toy Story 3."

"It's funny because I have admired the screenwriter, Michael Arndt , from 'Little Miss Sunshine,'" Abrams said to the French edition of Metro back in June of this year (translation via Google). "And in recent months, I asked him to work with me, every time he would say, 'I can't, I'm on something.' And then one morning I read that it was 'Star Wars' and I understood."

For its part, Lucasfilm had nothing but kind words for Arndt.

"I am very excited about the story we have in place and thrilled to have Larry and J.J. working on the script," Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a press release announcing the news. "There are very few people who fundamentally understand the way a 'Star Wars' story works like Larry, and it is nothing short of incredible to have him even more deeply involved in its return to the big screen. J.J. of course is an incredible storyteller in his own right. Michael Arndt has done a terrific job bringing us to this point and we have an amazing filmmaking and design team in place already prepping for production."

According to the website Badass Digest, Abrams and Kasdan will completely rework Arndt's script from square one. "This isn't a rewrite, this is a completely different movie with different main characters," wrote the site's editor, Devin Faraci, citing sources with knowledge of the situation.

Funny enough, Funny or Die made a video April that mocked the difficult time Arndt was having with his "Episode VII" script duties.

According to Lucasfilm, "Star Wars: Episode VII" is still set for release in 2015. No further time frame was provided by the company at this time. Production on the film will begin next spring.

OOPS I'M A DOPE but this came up in the search YEAH I GOTTA FIX SEARCH but Menty won't reply to me to warn me if it would kill the board if I did WHEEEEEEEEEEE

Yeah I saw. He's using my patented excuse (I feel bad about not posting, which makes me not want to post), which doesn't fly with me lol.

But he usually replies to my queries (lol I'm queer) on FB, and I asked him about Search on FB. THAT'S A NEW WRINKLE.

So Spock is in Microsoft's new advert for the Xbone, but they did it on the cheap so he looks weird. Also he beams down to Hungarian train stations.

I see your Spock cameo and raise you Chris Pine and Alice Eve cameos, plus some other random celebs.

I WILL REVIEW STAR TREK 12 EXCLUSIVELY HERE WITHIN 30 MINUTES.

well, I am stuck in a hotel room hundreds of miles from home feeling like Michael Sheen from Apocalypse Now so I am a little emotionally weak. I haven't smashed up the hotel room, got naked and drunk three bottles of whisky, but you get the point.

HOWEVER.

It's a good quite pacey JJ Abrams feast of fun. I just feel like they wasted the obvious talents of some of the actors. The cast is just out of this world, I even sort of appreciated Simon Pegg, who, love him to bits, but I hated in the last one. (I LOVE YOU SIMON, SORRY)

Tomtrek is right about the pacing. It's like being on a rollercoaster with Messenger (remember him?) operating the controls high on crack. It jars and rolls from area to area. I would stretch the analogy and say it was more like being on the Waltzers with a drunk Gypsy spinning you around.

Overall the story was shaping up nicely, I didn't mind the lines and the playing it for laughs. I could even forgive the lovers tiff scene when they are going incognito onto Kronos.

I even forgave them doing Khan. I didn't think it was particularly necessary but I kind of got it and accepted it, I remember thinking even at that point DONT OVERDO IT YOU COCK.

Then boy, oh boy did he overdo it. The radiation, the scream, the hand - of FUCK OFF, as Tomtrek so eloquently put it. The return from the dead as well DOCTOR EX MACHINA you dickwad.

Anyway - saved me from smashing up the hotel room and punching a mirror.
