I feel the same. Although I got very irritated by the idea of them using Khan, in retrospect, there were a lot of signs that it wasn't true.
For one, Bob Orci posted in the comments section of Trekmovie casually confirming the story, which doesn't make sense for the writer of a movie that doesn't come out for nearly a year that hasn't even had its name officially revealed, nevermind the plot. If it was true, he would've denied it, or made no comment at all.
And Cumberbatch as a ripped Pakistani Mexican dictator makes no sense.

Strikes me as too similar to The Dark Knight, since this is a reboot series of movies. It makes it sound as though it wants to achieve the same thing, which explains why Chris Pine said the other day that Trek wasn't going to be dark like the Batman trilogy.
It's also similar to Dark of the Moon, of course.
I suppose in a couple of years (or whenever it comes out) it'll be able to stand alone a bit more as memories of those other movies diminish, and it does evoke the idea of going into unknown space. I just feel that something better might have been thought up, but we'll see how it fits the plot when it comes out.
