What the flippety flip...

Simon Pegg Co-Writing ‘Star Trek 3′ With Doug Jung

EXCLUSIVE: Simon Pegg has been set to co-write Star Trek 3, the film that just got Fast & Furious director Justin Lin aboard after Roberto Orci exited the helmer chair. He will co-write the script with Doug Jung, creator of the TNT series Dark Blue. Pegg’s already a pivotal player in the JJ Abrams-produced Paramount/Skydance pic; he also will reprise his role as Scotty, the engineering wiz originated by James Doohan in the original 1960s Gene Roddenberry series. Don’t be surprised if Scotty beams up further on the call sheet. Jung also wrote for Bad Robot and Paramount a film called Diamond, which is how he got the gig. They are just getting underway.

Pegg certainly has the writing credits to back him up for such a job. With Edgar Wright, he’s scripted the Wright-directed Cornetto trilogy consisting of Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End, as well as Run Fatboy Run. Will tell you more when it becomes clear. Pegg is repped by UTA, Dawn Sedgwick Management in the UK and attorney Dan Fox. Jung’s repped by UTA, Circle of Confusion and Adam Kaller.
So...are we talking a comic script? Are they remaking Star Trek IV this time? WHALES?

Isn't it a bit concerning that they've only just started writing it now when it comes out next year?

Pegg has certainly co-written some good things with Edgar Wright (and Spaced with Jessica Hynes), but away from Wright he's written Run Fatboy Run which was awful and Paul which was pretty meh. And I'm pretty sure he used to say he hated Star Trek before he was cast as Scotty. So I don't know. I guess I'll judge it when I see the movie!

I don't remember him ever saying he hated it, but he does strike me as more of a Wars than a Trek fan. Maybe Edgar Wright will be giving him some friendly advice along the way.

He probably never said he hated it, no, but people posting "HE'S A TREKKER SO IT'LL BE GOOD" are probably wrong about the first part.

Yeah I remember reading Nemesis spoilers and thinking "I can't wait to see that shuttle escape scene!" and such...

I was always of the impression that Pegg was a legit fan and has a proper respect for Trek. This clip is an indication of that to a degree.

Either way, the nuTrek films have been, to me at least, enjoyable fluff. Well worth watching but never pushing the buttons of what the series meant to me growing up. Slightly above average summer flicks. I'm sure the third one will neatly fall in that category for me again. I wish we could just be done with the film run so we can get a new series underway.

There are only two Star Trek films that I've only watched once. They are Star Trek: Nemesis and Star Trek Into Darkness. And I'm not even sure which one is worse.

Nemisis.

Seen Darkness twice, it has some nice visuals, but suffered too much from being a mirror image of WOK, only not done as well.

NEM made me angry, because of what was promised. Plus I still cared more back then.

Into Darkness just made me shake my head and wonder why they would spend so much time and money on such a needless, useless endeavor. But I understood because Hollywood is really that awful now. NEM MADE ME THAT CYNICAL WHICH IS WHY I'M SO ANGRY AT IT. :rwmad:

I like imagining Simon Pegg shaking his fist in frustration as he reads another "can we have more Keenser please" script note from Paramount.
