What film did you recently see ? Do not forget to rate it

Ancient History:

Lost Highway (David Lynch).
Kinda sorta two (and a half) movies in one. Excellent, creepy setup, wrenching transition in the middle, WTF?!?!? ending. I like Lynch, but in this case he jumped off a cliff and forgot to leave a note for the audience. First 1/4 of the move I'd give a 8.5/10. Middle 6/10, last part 3/10. Sorry, with Lynch you've got to do that in a lot of cases.

Caught two relatively obscure ones on cable recently:

Dersu Uzala (1975) - Kurosawa flick I'd never heard of about a Goldi nomad who encounters a turn-of-the-century Russian surveying expedition out in the middle of Siberian nowhere and befriends their captain. Luscious cinematography, good story; kind of fizzles into a downbeat ending. 8/10

Caché ("Hidden" -2005) Brilliant flick about a well-to-do couple in France being stalked by an unknown nemesis who keeps leaving them creepy videos and drawn pictures. Unfortunately it's very nearly destroyed by an idiotically postmodern "limbo" ending...fuck the French and their fucking Frenchiness. 6.5/10

Every French film I've seen ends like that. The story is great then all of a sudden it ends as if they discovered they had about three minutes of film left so they had to wrap it up, quick.

Predators 1/10

Crap. Rodriguez needs to stick to regular action films and stay the fuck away from Sci-Fi.

Get him to the greek 3/10
almost famous meets the hangover. End of film.

Salt 4/10
I'd give it less of a score but angelina is always hot.

Jonah Hex 0
STOP TAKING OBSCURE COMICS AND MAKING THEM INTO MOVIES! WHAT THE FUCK!?
Even having Megan Fox in a corset doesn't save this gigantic piece of crap. Wild Wild West was more entertaining and original than this.

Robin Hood 3/10
It doesn't get a 0 because there wasn't a pre-battle speech. I fucking hate pre-battle speeches.

"Sweet Land" (2006)

The Yahoo synopsis is below. Sweet Land is a quiet kind of movie. No special effects. All story, character driven. Some magnificent scenes filled with wide blue skies. Yahoo users and critics gave this movie a B back in 2006. I will give it a good solid A.

Synopsis:
When Lars Torvik's grandmother Inge dies in 2004, he is faced with a decision--sell the family farm on which she lived since 1920, or cling to the legacy of the land. Seeking advice, he turns to the memory of Inge and the stories that she had passed on to him. Inge arrives in Minnesota in 1920 to marry a young Norwegian farmer named Olaf but her German heritage and lack of official immigration papers makes her an object of suspicion in the small town, and she and Olaf are forbidden to marry. Alone and adrift, Inge goes to live with the family of Olaf's friend and neighbor Frandsen and his wife Brownie, where she learns the English language, American ways, and a hard-won independence.Inge and Olaf slowly come to know each other, and against the backdrop of endless farmland and cathedral skies they fall in love, a man and woman united by the elemental forces of nature. Still unable to marry, they live together openly, despite the scorn of the neighbors and the disapproval of the local minister. But when his friend Frandsen's farm is threatened by foreclosure, Olaf takes a stand, and the community unites around the young couple, finally accepting Inge as one of their own.

Watched Savage Grace last night with Julianne Moore. Hellloooooo Hugh Dancy. Didn't you look all sexy with a beard and beefed up a bit?

Twisted people + true story = Happy Tisi.

Finally - got to see this movie.

Absolutely loved it. It was as fun as the trailers, even more so. The critics have been giving it a B- but I think I give it a good solid A.

A wonderful cast - star studded and all doing their best, a good story even if not too surprising, explosions where there should be explosions, and Bruce being Bruce like nobody else can be Bruce.

While I enjoyed the entire movie, there were a couple of oustanding scenes with an excellent soundtrack.

I'd recommend it for most people except those who do not like people over 50 or don't like loud noises.

300 10/10

Ok so I watched this years after everyone else had already seen it, but better late than never.

Excellent action all the way through, and based on a true(ish) story.

Kind of makes you wonder what would have happened if they hadnt been betrayed.

Lots of historical inaccuracies, actually, but yeah, good story.

Same thing would have happened, betrayal or not, just maybe a day or two later.

Rating 7/10

strictly speaking no movie but a mini-series but as it fits onto 2 DVDs I think we could make an exception. After all, the average Bollywood movie is about the same length.

positive: solid acting, nice landscape, good special effects, nobody grossly miscast (on the contray, some characters really well cast). Divided up in handy portions, nice cliffhanger leaves option for a sequel.

negative: story can be understood in detail only after previous lecture of the novels, at least volumes 1 and 5. Too brutal (though the novels are as well). Gross mistranslation from English into German (name of zeppelin - Arrgh!!! not every phrase can be translated literally, dear special effect guys! Next time ask a native speaker!) Story suffered from being cut too brutally. Should have been at least one episode longer.

Don't forget all the nearly naked men who looked pretty darn good naked.

Prince of Persia

3.5 stars. Jake did a zexy British accent, and I love me some Gemma. It was just plain fun, so that's all good.

Toy Story 3 - 8/10

I agree with the review from above - if you don't get emotional about the last 20 minutes, you have no soul.

Finally rented "How to Train your Dragon" this last weekend.

Solid 8/10. Graphics and visuals excellent, "Pixar-like" as far as character design being just "cartoony enough" without becoming a parody. Dreamworks and Pixar are basically on the same level visually.
The difference between the studios is usually in story...and Dreamworks didn't do badly here. Dialog was sharp and well done, overall story ok, only plot hole I could see is where did the "Big Bad" come from? Climax conflict ran slightly long. Still, a very satisfying movie, although I'll wait a few more years before showing it to my son.

CGI has been ready to compete with "live action" now for a few years. This is one of the movies that I'd use to argue the point in favor of that view.
