I am not so sure about the "It's Israel who done it" argument any more. It is clear that the schism (Shia / Sunni) has been a festering boil for some considerable time. This, combined with a tribal / warlord environment, gives rise to a war economy and therefore a state of war as normal. The Sunni have some credible complaints and they have mainly been dealt to them by Western / US (or Western / US supported) governments. I don't however believe that the ethnic cleansing that is occurring right now is the fault of Zionism or of US intervention. This would be similar to claiming the Khmer Rouge was a direct result of the Vietnam war. It was a mitigating factor but you could equally just call them sick fucks with a power trip - as natural a human condition as breathing.

I don't believe the Baathists have been running the middle east. If you look at the power base of Saudi compared to the Baathist states of Iraq and Syria then they pale into insignificance. Guess what - Saudi is chock full of rich, Sunni dickheads who like to give money to Sunni extremists or "resistance fighters" - just the same way that Americans gave millions to Irish terrorists and extended the troubles we had for decades. I believe we have been supporting the "royalist" states for too long and it has bitten us on the ass. The Batthist cult, while damaging, is nothing compared to the royal fuckwits that run most of the Arab states.

Basically the baathists are the peasant answer to KSA and needed a pseudo kingdom because they don't have access to holy sites and holy bloodlines or any other alternative, they are the alternative and by default have also filled the space of an appearance in difference of governance.
